Dchris's Grappling with Age

I couldn’t either… but, I played on the same teams as parents who could afford them for the whole team.

So you’ve told me… fortunately NE PDX is now a denim-nut-hugging paradise, with $5 donuts.

True. Now.

Back then, my dad coached the basketball team at Sabin. They won two City Championships in basketball. He would load the whole team in the back of our 1974 Ford Town Squire station wagon and take them down to Caplan’s. Bring what you got, we’ll make up the difference.

White Chuck Taylors, the kids were thrilled.

The two years they lost, they lost to ASP, Albina Sports Programs - they had Ronnie and Donnie Ransom and Ivory Joe White.

Last time I was in Portland I was walking through what used to be the ghetto, now million dollar homes. They had signs out front, “Black Lives Matter.”

It’s ironic because those homes are now owned but denim nut huggers and lesbians and all of the black people that used to live there have been priced out.

And, of course, when I get there in two weeks I will be up on Alberta at Salt and Straw and all of the other new places that have pushed people out, spending my money.

Mmmm! Let me know if you want recommendations… I’m very familiar with this district.

I mean, we’ll support you… just not here. Go find somewhere else to live.

Cool. When I was growing up, it was death to be white on Alberta.

I grew up walking distance from that. My kids like the grilled cheese place and the shed. Hertzlers or something like that had a great breakfast five years ago. It’s a cool hood.

Again, walking distance from my childhood home.

Grant not Jefferson?

Yes, Jeff was close by, Madison as well.

The ASP kids went to Jeff, and Grant and Jeff had some epic battles in the late 70’s.

Funny stories, I was the ball boy on those Golden Ball teams. Darryl Motley played basketball for my dad - he played for the Royals, made the game winning catch in the World Series.

I was also a bat boy on my dad’s Babe Ruth teams. Rick Raivio played for him. Rick lit it up at U of P and played for the Lakers in summer league before cutting his leg on a chain saw - ended up playing in Europe.

His kid Dereck played for Gonzaga a few years ago. My brother was an adjunct at Gonzaga Law school.

I grew up on 21st and Fremont.

Ahhhh whoops… I was thinking you lived off Alberta. Makes more sense.

What. A. Fucking. Day.

I was up all night with a sick kid. Fell asleep around 4, woke up at 6 worked u til kids woke up at 730. Took kids to appt. then drove 45 minutes for tours of buildings with a client. Unfortunately, the tours stretched the lunch hour so I was forced to eat out with my client. Next time I’ll tell my client to fuck off and pull out some pre-cooked food from the cooler in my truck. Ate a salad, btw. Then co rubies tours. At 3, I left the tour early, drove 2.5 hours to an hour meeting where I presented for 45 minutes. Then drove home 3.5 hours. On the way home I stopped at a gas station to refill and grab some beef jerky. Got home around 1015 and crashed. No lifting or home cooked food. Only ate a salad and 3oz of beef jerky.

If you don’t mind me asking what is it you do and what are your thoughts on your work life balance with it?

I’m just getting to the start of my career and often wonder how much work/hours are worth how much money etc. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts when you have time.

I work in the construction industry, but less on the hammer swinging side and more on the planning, funding and design management.

I think defining ones desired outcome is very important. My ideas on work life balance are completely different than others.

My professional goals: Grow and Run my company. I’m gunning for equity and hope to achieve it this year.

My personal financial goals: Maintain salary solely for retirement investment purposes. Increase and grow investments to pay for monthly expenses. Have no debt that isn’t backed by an investment-asset, which excludes my home and vehicles.

Personal non-financial goals: live without thinking about money. I want to spend $500 on dinner without thinking ($150 is my threshold). I want to be able to fly anywhere in US on a whim for a long weekend.

Now, how that translates to the balance… I’m 29 (30 in a few weeks). Im making short term sacrifices for freedom, such as gone 3 days a week. That’s a given for a few years. How I maximize my time during that period is by working ~16 hours a day while gone. This allows me to get my shit done without working long days when I’m home. I also don’t have a gym while home. I get my workout in with limited equipment at home. I don’t have friends (not a joke or a real desire I have) to spend time with. I wake up early and go to bed late, while home, to get any workouts or work in. I don’t watch tv much or do things that cause me to be independent while home. Including car maintenance, shopping, etc. it all happens while I’m gone or online. Appts occur where I travel (dentist, dr etc.) it’s kind of an exhaustive list of normal things, but I do it all when I’m away. I’d argue I have more time with my wife and now kids than people who don’t travel. I also have yard maintenance and house cleaners because I don’t want to do that when I’m home.

I got very comfortable when I broke six figures. Again, I’d work 60 hours a week if it meant I didn’t work 40 and clean for 20 a week. More money equals more freedom. What’s your priority? Work less, but less freedom?

My sister and brother in law work 38.5 hours a week. They have a house, two cars and a nice enough house. But they don’t go out often, vacation and have to do all of their chores, etc.

I work a bunch, but I can eat out every meal, vacation and don’t have the same limitations. I do, however, have an incredibly stressful job that is demanding. Choose your poison, I suppose.

Yep.

There will be a balance to life but we get to decide how to load it and where to put the fulcrum. My sister in law works part time and her husband works extra. I think it’s probably close to 80 hours per week between the two, but he’s always gone.

I’ve never looked at it this way. I don’t clean for 20 hours (or even 2) per week, but it’s an interesting thought. I hate yard work. I could hire it out but I’m not busy like you and really don’t have an excuse.

Probably a bit high, but dishes, laundry, picking up after kids, yard work, car washes, etc. shit takes time and I don’t want to do it.

You’ll take the time to at least move toys to the edges of the room after you step on something in the dark that feels like a bamboo spike from Vietnam.

No real workout. Held two kids that weigh ~30lbs for 30 minutes during church. That’s essentially an isometric arm workout.

Then, went for a 4.5 mile walk through a park. The first .5 miles was just my weight, the next 2 were with 30lbs on my shoulder, the next 1.5 were with 2 30lb sacks of potatoes in each arm. The last .5 was with a 30lb sack and a 70lb sack. Haha. And it was cold as shit. My jacket went to one and my hoody to the other.

Food:

Protein bar in morning. Salad with 4oz of steak for lunch and a pork quesadilla for dinner.
