We started with Uchi Mata motions up and down mat. They didn’t tell us the takedown we were learning, intentionally. After the third time down, I said, this is like an Uchi and ruined it. Hahah
Then worked side escapes into arm bar.
I got two rounds in, first was a black belt I had never seen before. 7 minute rounds. He played guard from start, I’ve been studying how to defend against good guard play. To that end, I led with my knee and shin and worked to headquarters by high stepping. He off balanced me and tried to come up with sweep, but I recovered. He got my foot and was threatening straight ankle, so I grabbed his and position my leg to outside of his (think DLR). I inverted out and ended up passing his guard. He had solid frames, so I went to knee on belly, with grip on belt and inside lapel, with forearm across throat. He then pushed on my knee, so I let go of belt and pulled on near side lapel and dropped other elbow to mat instantly getting tap. The rest of round was hell. He turned up heat and we battled for next 5.5 minutes.
Second round was a bit easier. Good blue belt. I got saddle from butterfly and finished with a knee bar. We just messed around and I showed him leg entries for rest of round.
Ate a bit higher calories than I wanted and skipped my protein ice cream at night.
Breakfast was breakfast burrito. Lunch was going to just be 8oz of ham, but I ate half of a breakfast burrito. Then dinner was a few pieces of a very thin crust pizza. Not terrible, because the pizza is design to be low calorie. I just would have preferred not to eat it and eat more ham.
Training BJJ today. Should be back to M/W schedule again for bjj.
I’m taking tomorrow off work for appointments. Should be able to get my swings and a shoulder workout in. That’s the plan anyway
It’s front headlock month. Started with overtie, circling and snap down into turtle position. Then worked various versions of a guillotine, between arm in and out, etc.
First round was against 275lb white belt. I handled him pretty easily. 3-4 subs in a few minutes, then just proceeded to coach him through positions to show why I kept beating him in the same way. If I beat you once, I just got you.. but, If I do the same thing 4 times and you’re not making an adjustment, I’ll stop and show them
Next up was gym owner. He let me pass straight to side control, and I used to take back. There was a moment I had the lapel and could have put a lot of pressure on the choke, but I didn’t. Felt too easy and I didn’t like that. Spent 3 minutes working back to mount to back, before he got free. He ended up passing my guard with 30 seconds left. I hip bumped into him and immediately got knee on his chest and threw my far leg over his head but he pulled his arm out just in time and then sat back with my arm. No subs isn the 7 minutes round
Final round was with B, the 16 yo white belt. It was his turn to dominate positionally. To his credit, he almost got me in a bow and arrow twice, but he was a bit sloppy with technique and I got out. He got off mat pumped and immediately left. I’ll be back today (wed), if he’s there, I’ll demoralize him again.

Morning Weight: 226
Trending right. Good to see this low of weight, given my 224 was after an intense day.
Will hit BJJ class today. This will likely be my last one for a few weeks. My wife got me a tattoo for my birthday. My appt is on Sunday, so will likely take 3 weeks off for it to heal.
ya.. this is me eating crow. I subbed him pretty quick in the 7 minute round. Then started fucking around. He got me in closed guard and I was trying to do the Craig Jones run over his head. He grabbed my arm from behind my back and ripped it up (kimura motion but with one arm reaching over my shoulder and pulling arm up and out). Just copped my first sub to a whitebelt in over 2 years. I’m probably just going to cry and quit Jiu Jitsu now.
Rolled with my coach again. I went for butterfly sweep and abandoned and entered saddle. He immediately protected his leg and I used it to pass. We then scrambled for a long time, went through the round and into next one. He then worked a baseball bat choke and put everything he had into it, turned the corner and was completely put out. He then let go to reset and was like, ‘I don’t want to keep cranking’. I just responded by saying I had my hand in there and was just chilling. We reset, he passed. I pinned his arm and shot a triangle, but couldn’t get under him to finish it. I fought it for awhile and tried the armbar, which he defended. Finished as a stale mate.
That’s my last training session for a few weeks. I get a tattoo on Sunday and can’t get in tomorrow or Friday.
Had to schedule blood test for doc and wasn’t thinking. I scheduled for 130p, which meant I had to fast until then. My wife made scones from sourdough, so ran home to snag one to get me through. It was my oldest’s birthday. We went to little restaurant in our small town. I got Korean steak bites that are cooked on skewers. It comes with a cooked cup of jasmine rice. I avoided the sauce and just ate the meat, onions and rice. For dessert, they brought a chocolate lava cake (my favorite).. but, I didn’t have a bite. Then at home, we had a crepe cake. I had a few bites but didn’t’ finish. Overall, super low calorie day.
Got our baby to bed around 745 and was pumped to get my workout in earlier than expected. Got my stuff together to start swinging and my baby woke up. Got her back to bed by 815 and headed back down. Did my first set of 50 and started first few swings of second, when baby woke again. Back asleep by 910 and just called it. I was too exhausted to try and finish. I did get a 200lb chiminea into the back of my truck today. My wife found it on marketplace. The lady who sold it was a bit freaked out when I squatted down, picked it up and waddled to back of truck. It’s a solid cast iron piece. Pretty cool. Not looking forward to putting at the back of my property.

Finished my KB swings for the day. Not ideal I didn’t do in one sitting, but I want to make sure I’m getting the work done at minimum. Last night I was planning on doing a bit more, but my kid wanted to look at their pet bearded dragon and moved the light onto the wood enclosure nearly starting a fire and burning the light out. Had to run to pet store at 830 to get new lights and bulbs. Kinda ate into my time to workout. I did get 2x10 OHP with 100lb Med Ball.
Good reminder that I want to get back to sessions like I did in TX, where I’d grab my med ball and just toss it for an hour while kids played.
Morning weight today was 226.
I’m very happy with this. I’m not, by any means, carb depleted and empty stomach like I was when I hit 224. if I put myself in a similar state, I’d likely be under 224. I’m hitting the point where I’m as lean as I’ve ever been. I usually get complacent here. I have to keep pushing through it. The cool thing about that is I was 218 the last time I was this lean. I’d like to believe I’ve gained some muscle since then.
Does this equal significant time off the mat? I remember an anecdote (maybe apocryphal) that one of the Miyao brothers held off getting tattoos because it would mean having to stop training for awhile.
You can continue posting pictures and explain what is happening in them for me. It will be like you are an online instructor until you can get back to it. Lol.
Weight is stuck between 225-227. I felt a bit leaner today, but this is for sure a sticking point.
The KB Swings are getting easy. No longer a struggle to get through, my rest is just a minute now between sets too. Thinking about upping weight and/or increasing reps. I have an 85lb bell that I’m thinking I might do sets of 30 with.
It’s been very difficult to have time to do more. I have capacity, just not enough time when I get kid to bed. Last night was 915 and I was crashing. I meant to wake up and knock out 20 minutes of pressing this morning but was up from 1-330 with kids this morning.
hahaha! I created this image a few months back. I wanted to make a shirt out of it, but also think it’d be a cool tattoo. My wife thinks is incredibly gay. The guy without the gun is in the saddle or cross ashi position. It’s a pretty dangerous spot for the guy with the gun, as there is numerous submissions that all tear the ligaments in the knee.. thus, the gun pulled. I threw a cowboy theme on it, just cause.
I’m sorry to hear, and glad I could help. My wife and kids refer to all my bjj friends as my boyfriends. If I’m ever on my phone smiling, they tease me about it. They support my hobbies, with a lot of questions marks.
Good stuff. Was easier than anticipated. Rest were well under 2 minutes. I’ll increase to 30 reps moving forward, and increase until a max 2 minute rest isn’t long enough.
A great line I heard from C during a recent training session was ‘I’m just here for the cuddles’. And we’re all straight men with wive’s, kiddo’s etc. It certainly good a few good laughs from myself and others.
I had a friend at my old gym with this on his rash guard. hahaha
Sunday - Off
Had people staying over weekend. Was chaos, my 4 kids, their 3.. 11 people in my house. I kept diet in check tho. I had a higher calorie day, with a slightly bigger lunch than normal. Breakfast and dinner were same
Monday - Off
Harder morning to wake up early to workout, when you have a bunch of guests. I then got final tattoo for while. On inner thigh. This one is a bit more sensitive afterwards. I may need to take today off too.
Morning weight: 223.0 which is a new low. I also dropped kids off at pool, after weighing myself. I’m not going to count being sub 222, because I didn’t see it. ha

I didn’t get anything in. Didn’t quite feel ready with tenderness form tattoo.
Wednesday
Baby woke up at 330, fell back asleep at 445.. and I get up at 5. So, got up. I got 3 sets of 55 with 60lb bell in and my hip and back locked up. I stopped before I’m out for a week. Really missing the cold plunge. I should be able to do it again this week. They said not a good idea with new tattoo. Feel like I’m putting my life on hold for this. lol
May try to do some arms tonight. Just get a pump in.
I had a bigger food day yesterday since I hit a new low. Ate breakfast and a burger and fries for lunch. Then skipped dinner. Morning weight was 225lbs

Cold Plunge: 3 minutes at 38F
Didn’t sleep great. Baby woke up at 130 and fell back asleep at 230. Been a bit rough last few days, as allergies are kicking my families ass. Baby hates being congested. I got back to bed and laid there for 3 hours awake. Nothing anxiety related, but I was laying in bed thinking about how I’m going to fire someone today. Less stress and more running thoughts.. Which leads me to..
A fairly good, likable guy, who is going through a lot personally. I don’t need to spill his story, but I know more about what’s going on in his life than he has told me.. due to living in a small town. I’ve been very accommodating to his excuses to cover personal emergencies that happen multiple times a week. However, yesterday, I asked if he’d be returning to office and he said not likely as his meeting was going way late. I drove to where he was meeting and no one was there.. then called the person he was meeting with and they told me it had been over for a long time. You can lie to me about why you’re leaving, but do not lie and tell me you’re working when you are not. Well, in coincidental manner, he called in sick today and thus punting this further out.
