Dads - How Much Time Off Working Out After Baby Was Born?

I’ve been interested in brain candy for some time. Good to see your thumbs up on it.

Right now we’ve begun taking htp5, ashwaganda(?) and some others

A father of four here. Honestly, I’ve only taken days off when the wife was in hospital and I was alone with the other kids. Even then I did some pushups and pulls just for the hell of it.

For me, training was crucial as it provided me the impetus to do my part when it came to handling a newborn. I’m a night owl, so I’d usually do my a 40 minute training session immediately before taking over a night shift with the baby, usually from 11pm to 4-5 am.

Sure, I was using up my sleeping time but it was crucial for psychological reasons and the break from the single minded focus that comes with taking care of a newborn baby.

I actually believe there’s a distinct possibility that I’ve consumed more brain candy than any other living human. Without exaggeration. I’ve mentioned it in a few places on this site, but I started buying it as soon as it was introduced, and the total number of days I’ve missed taking it since it’s release is less than 20.

First child was born last October on a Wednesday morning around 8am. I spent the rest of the day and night within arms reach to help with anything I possibly could. By the next afternoon I was off to the gym to find those new mythical new dad strength gains!

In all seriousness, having a child was stressful and I wanted to be 100 percent there to do as much as physically possible but with that being said, getting in a workout has always made me more awake, outgoing and overall a happier person. When I’m happier, i’m more prone to helping out. My wife knows this and was readily sending me out the door to the gym on day 2.

There’s not right answer to how much time to take off, you and your wife will find what works best!

Meal prep in bulk and do it ahead of delivery. Make big meals and freeze them, then when you are home from the hospital you can throw them in the oven or crockpot and boom, done!

Also , stock up on Spike! ha

I took off whatever time we were at the hospital with both my boys. Once we got home I was able to train again, but I had to squeeze it in around helping out with the kids and around the house. I was fortunate to have a decent garage gym at the time, so I could slip out and get some work in when time permitted, or I’d just do some bodyweight work in the living room during naps.

I actually find it more difficult to find time to train now that both boys are older. One is 14 and the other is 11, and we go from football, to wrestling, to baseball, and then repeat the process year-round. I coach football and baseball, so there’s no chance to train while they practice. I pretty much have to be at the gym at 5 am when they open now in order to train before work.
