My question is why bring the two kids to the backyard so they “fight there under supervision instead of in some alley” and not discuss the matters as normal and civilized people.

Well, I’m going to admit (sheepishly) that when my older boys were 12 and 11, I watched another kid hit and scratch my son and I encouraged him to defend himself and I did not discourage his younger brother to help if needed. You fight one, you fight both. I was not going to break it up. The other fucker was a future felon. There was a lesson to be taught there that day. First, you do not let anyone violate you. This is a cruel world full of predators. Second, you fight one, you fight both. Brothers.
I also sat in Court two years ago after my 2nd oldest got a ticket/summons for fighting after school. The other kid basically went looking for him. And I didn’t sit there and tell the panel “all the right things”. I told them he has a legal god damn right to defend himself, the same as my right to defend myself if I’m assaulted while walking out the court room door. He can choose to call for help, or he can choose to defend. I don’t care which decision he makes, but either are his legal right.
So yea, I can definitely see letting a 12 year old settle some shit if they’re attacked. I don’t know if I’d allow it now that I’m older. I honestly do not know the answer. But if my earlier actions a decade ago makes me some scum, or redneck, then so be it.
