Dad Bod

Concise, accurate, and biting. Lovely.
The three attributes of good journalism.

As you well know.

My dad is 63, has broad shoulders, bigish arms and visible abs. The kind of guy this article describes is fat, lazy, takes no pride in his appearance and clearly attracts girls with huge self esteem issues.
They are welcome to them.

When I read about dad bods for the first time two weeks ago I figured that must be the body I have.

Then I image searched it. Nope.

It seems like their “Works out but isn’t afraid to have a beer or a slice of pizza” is the same as Brad Pitt or Ben Affleck’s “Powerlifted eight hours a day to bulk up and get huge for this role”

I think that this thread has dramatically overstated the softness of the “dad bod,” to the extent of making something of a straw man out of it.

The “dad bod” is discussed here along as akin to that frat guy in college who drinks beer and doesn’t work out, which is in some respects fair given the association some newspapers have made with it.

To me, the more accurate example of the “dad bod” look is Jon Hamm’s Don Draper. If you look for Slate’s article on the “Dad Bod,” it has a pic of Don Draper on the beach that seems to fit the “dad bod” look.

Personally, I think the dad bod fad is healthy and almost encouraging. It’s important to remember that a lot of the “ideal physique” and “ideal looks” for men and women are cyclical. At least among the upper middle class and educated class, there’s been an emphasis in the past decade or so on the “ultra-fit male” as an ideal to achieve, typically as either triathletes or as very lean weightlifters/crossfitters.

So I view the “dad bod” phenomenon as a perfectly logical reaction against what’s been the latest fad for the past decade–the very fit man.

It’s interesting to see the reactions in this thread to it: this is a board populated by fitness enthusiasts, so it’s natural that we’d react negatively to the dad bod look. But a lot of the responses on here reek of insecurity: of the idea that “hey, I sink all this time and effort into having a very strong/lean/etc physique, so anything that idealizes/popularizes the opposite is wrong/weak/stupid! I pity them.”

But not everyone likes exercise. And as much as people come on these boards and say “blahblah I work a lot and have kids but still exercise,” not everyone wants to do that. We only have so many hours in the day. I like the “dad bod” in that it provides those people with a look/physique that’s acceptable and says “hey, I’m fitting in a category too.”

Could someone please let me know when MomBod becomes hot?

Then with any luck, in about 20 years GrandmaBod will be the thing.

I’m going to go for GrandmaBod-Of- Steel, which is GrandmaBod but with really vascular forearms and big traps.

HA!! That made me laugh. I completely forgot about that!!! Well played.

No, I was thinking more like MomBod with spider veins, boobs that now orbit my waist, and that arm fat that looks like bat wings. I think you’re picturing HotYogaMomBod. Not the same thing.

I think I’m more concerned that this article HAD TO PUT A DISCLAIMER at the bottom pointing out that it is satire - How dumb have we (collectively) gotten?

After the breakfast segment I said to myself, “this has to be a joke” - we really have to point this shit out now? Good. God.

Nothign worng with that, easier to play with when you have short arms, and are pre-occupied with other things.

He can use this method to teach her not to blow a guy and take one in the ass at the same time.
I don’t want video of that though.
We know what we are getting into when he’s got the same exact body type at the age of 22 that he’s going to have at 45.

Since we all know, no one ever gets fatter and worse off as they age.

“differences in cloth sizes e.g. American XL is bigger than Asian XL”

This I can confirm. Lived in Bangkok for some time, I look like the Hulk in most of my Thai t shirts, and I’m not big.
