Cycle Advice for "Summer"

I did this in three months when I started deadlifting consistently. Went from 315-415 1rm in a little under 12 wks (this was like… A little over a year ago).

Do you have a wallet made of gold? 300mg proviron/day would cost an absolute fortune.

@mnben87 is on another level. Not knocking your DL but I never deadlift and can pull mid 400s any day of the week after not deadlifting for a year. When you are a seasoned deadlifter hitting 5-600s adding those additional lbs becomes a long haul. I think you know that though. Kudos to that quick 100 though, its impressive either way to grow that much so quickly.

I’m not particularly strong. I think my 1rm on the deadlift is around 430, that being said I only weigh around 160. The quick 100 was ages ago, I’ve more/less had a (slightly more than) 4 plate deadlift for the better part of a year now due to not being able to train the deadlift for a long period of time. I think manual labour/farm work might have played a significant role regarding strength maintenance when unable to lift properly.

My DL progress stalled following a bout of injuries last year. Goal is now to hit 500lbs before the new year, I think it can be done. Also want to see if I can hit 315 on the bench by the end of the year. My squat is abysmal because I had a tendency to substitute leg pressing for squats. As a result I should be able to gain strength fairly quickly in this department, a 315lb squat by the end of the year (or likely before then) seems very reasonable.

What’s more, I wish to accomplish this without gaining a significant amount of weight. I prefer being relatively lean.

That would be pretty good at 160 lbs IMO.

I am aiming for over 600 lbs on the deadlift and 4 plates or more (405) on bench for a push pull meet, and I would like to do it in the 198 lb weight class. I have historically struggled with the deadlift, but have seen some progress lately.

Those numbers would be good for the general population, but in powerlifting they are intermediate. Add another 100 lbs to each lift, and that will start to get attention.

My squat is also abysmal IMO. Wraps really help for me, but without them my squat is poverty.

Your progress on DL was really good if you added 100 lbs in 12 weeks starting at 315.

What is your squat?

With wraps 507 lbs in a meet. Without wraps I recently did a hard 435 lbs. I would guess 445 lbs would likely go up.

Yeah I can see how that’s weaker by comparison. I’m the opposite with a strong squat and weaker DL. I always get back pain with DL but I have levocurvature of the spine which may be the cause.

600lb deadlift is considered an elite lift within the general populace. By competitive powerlifter standards it’s still considered quite impressive (depending on weight class). A 600lb deadlift below say… 180 would be phenomenal.

Actually went from 225 X 10 to 315 X 10. As a result my 1rm jumped from 315 to slightly over 405. I still tend to deadlift within higher rep ranges, adding 2-5kg each time I hit 12 reps. Then every couple/few months I test my 1rm. This approach works suprisingly well for me.

Hit 315x13 the other day, so I can go up in weight next time I have a deadlift orientated day.

Lol at a 507 lb squat being considered "poverty’ level.

My best raw squat I have done is 50 lbs higher than my best raw bench. My raw deadlift is 140 lbs ahead of my squat.

Part of this is I find squats unpleasant. I push harder on bench and deadlift. Part of it is genetics. My legs are by no means small, and I train them quite a lot, but my upper body is proportionally bigger. I have seen guys with little legs and big back with good pulls, but not good squats. I think this is also why I get a lot out of wraps (they simulate having stronger quads). With the simulated stronger quads, I have evenly matched leg and back strength. I think the guys who are mostly limited by back strength don’t get as much out of wraps (their legs are already strong enough). Their legs in wraps far outmatch their back, and the back limits them.

What kind of masochist are you to go 12 reps on a DL routinely? When I deadlift, I do maximum 5 reps. With romanians I go to 8 max. I don’t deadlift as my legs are big in comparison to my upper body and the DL puts mass on my legs very fast. But when I did go to higher reps on DL, my heart nearly exploded in my chest.

I can’t hit a 500lb squat after about one month of effort with no wraps. I hadn’t squatted heavy in a year and hit 485 the other day. But I’m built for squatting. Unfortunately I can’t dead much if any more than I can squat and my back gets super stiff after. I just don’t lift heavy other than th occasional squat anymore. I focus on BB techniques and honestly look better from it anyway.

You get used to it. Good for conditioning.

Also, masochist would indicate I derive sexual gratification from high rep deadlifts. I do find very intensive, back breaking exercise and/or labour pleasurable to an extent; but not within a sexual context. Rather working out very hard makes me feel satisfied/content.

@lordgains ya know what’s worse than 10 rep deadlifts? TWENTY rep deadlifts. Seriously, put (light weight) on the bar and try lift explosively

Your frame looks good for strength IMO. I use a lot of bodybuilding in my training too. I want to look good and be strong. I use higher reps than a lot of powerlifters. It seems to work for me at least.

I do both. I train the following core lifts for strength/power

  • bench press (or db bench if my shoulders can’t take it)
  • squat/front squat
  • deadlift
  • push press/occasionally OHP
  • power cleans
  • barbell rows
  • pull ups
  • dips

Then I accessorise, use bodybuilding techniques to fill out the rest of my routine (machines, drop sets, super sets, isolation exercises etc).

Should be noted pullover machine is fantastic for lats but harsh on the shoulders. I’ve found a way to get around this is to use a narrower grip.

I find it’s squatting that results in significant back pain. I have a few bulging discs, squatting appears to aggravate this.

Also have structural damage to one of my shoulders alongside a few other irritants.

Sorry i can’t really weigh in on this as i don’t cycle anymore.

Hey! Long time for sure. I’ve actually met a lovely lady and decided I dont want to ruin it by being somewhat bipolar while on gear. And would like to try for a baby at some point. Not saying i wont blast after having a baby though (if I’m able to regain fertility).
