Is it just me, or are bodybuilders looking better than ever? Through the various phases over the decades, I think we’ve reached a zenith. Today’s guys just look so damn good with mass and symmetry fully in balance.
I admit my own disillusionment with bodybuilding through parts of the 90s and early 2000s. But now I’m damn near obsessed again, thanks to the new criteria and condition these guys get into.[/quote]
Yeah, the bellies are disappearing (in comp shape, that is) etc… Dunno about the extreme dryness man, but other than that…

I fully agree, bodybuilding is exciting again! I’m very glad.
I’ve always been a fan of James. When I first started training, his chest videos always got me pumped. He’d be repping out with 405, 495 on incline bb, and my jaw would hit the floor. What do yall think has held him back when it comes competition time?

Who knows. Contest prep is as much art as it is science. What works for some won’t work for others and what may work for you when you weigh 200lbs in contest shape won’t work when you weigh 250lbs.
His lack of placement just shows how difficult it is to fine tune your physique in those last few weeks.
Some bodybuilders used to drink wine before they went out on stage for more vascularity. I am sure this does not work for everyone.
Some have been known to do hours of cardio just before the contest. This would RUIN the physiques of some others.

True. And some, like Arnold, would do a 3-hour grueling workout just hours before a competition.

You would think that a glass of wine would knock them on their ass in the depleted state they are in.

That’s the thing. I heard of it being used in the 60’s. They weren’t that depleted back then. In fact, most of them looked pretty damned healthy on stage.
They were nowhere near the gaunt and withdrawn state many current bodybuilders are in on stage.
That is another reason we need to quit worrying about “glute striations”.

Ah, gotcha. That makes more sense.
I’m surprised more competitors aren’t dropping on stage in the middle of their routines.

Ah, my favorite memory from competing as a teenager. A shot of vodka to wash down the chocolate bar and the crushed up niacin tablets. Good times!
Damn, I like looking at these physiques 2-4 weeks out before going to train at night. Pure motivation.
