About your son, what’s his size? My son turns 12 in October. I wondered about introducing him to lifting, but wondered if he was too young/undeveloped yet. Don’t know anything about that. He’s incredibly athletic, but build like a string bean. Long and lean. Plays hockey and climbs everything he comes across. Sorry for the long windedness . . .
The Endearing Towhead is about 5’ 1" and 114 lbs as of yesterday (which I didn’t reach until I was 15). He’s kinda rangy-built but solid with a little extra pudge around the hips from still being young. I only brought him in with me because he expressed an interest though. I read a lot about how exercise affects young bodies and all indications are that as long as they’re not going for maxes there’s no harm in it. Shoot - farmers’ kids are doing chores at that age that require more heavy lifting than most sports and they grow up just fine.
My son is about 5’3" and maybe 95 lb. dripping wet in a parka. Looks like an endurance runner. Skinny. He’s never expressed interest in the weights. So maybe I should just leave well enough alone for now. I totally agree with you about the chore thing.
OK - Threw my hat in the ring for another virtual meet on the 20th. Guess I better practice my benching again. Good thing for me the scoring favors weight and age.
2 dumbells side by side, side-on to the squat rack on each side. I used 100 and 105 together. I put a ten lb plate on the outside to keep them from rolling. Loop the bands around both db’s and up to the bar. You gotta be careful unracking because the bands will fling you backward since they are behind you at the time.
Look down at the bottom of the rack here from the last time I did them:
I went a little lower than usual in my squat walkouts and holds and I’m thinking that increasing the descent distance might have some benefit over time. I don’t want to waste my time though if someone presents the case or cases where it doesn’t have any positive effect. Kinda seems like a cross between a progressive partial and an isometric, the former which has had positive effects for me and the latter which I have not tried but for which there is encouraging literature.
Hi Albino-man. I’ll be totally rude and say I won’t be reading your full log but I will be following from hence on. deal? That squat-vid with bands looks pretty good. At what point do you recommend the use of bands in squat training?

Can’t say as I would be able to blame you - I’ve got something like 5 of them chained togather.
I don’t really have a recommendation for bands. I just throw them in every so often for a different kind of stimulus. I’m not working speed or anything like that though they will make you faster. I just find them challenging. I also just like impressing myself with the force total - for instance yesterday’s total force at the top of the squat was 475 while at the bottom, I’m guessing that it around 345/355. The way I had them choked there was tension even as the bar rested on the support pins of the rack.

Thanks Joe. They were tougher than I would have liked. I’ve lost too much weight.
I’m using the 6th hole on the belt now, down from feeling uncomfortably tight at the 4th hole.
You losing the weight on purpose?
Nope. I just stop eating when I get stressed out. It was an experiment for a while and then things went pear-shaped at the homestead. They’re getting sorted out, though.

That band squat looked great. Do you feel like band squats are helping explosiveness through the middle of the lift?
By golly they’d better. I’ll know in another week or so. The middle certainly is the toughest part of a banded lift. One thing I’ve noticed is that the bands encourage is a wider stance, which gives better leverage through the middle. You don’t want a long moment arm once the tension begins to develop.
Sweet Jeebus Tony nice work with the B-squats! I’m rather impressed with the high pulls as well! Your traps should be taking over your neck any time now…
