Probably not … I haven’t been able to check my emails in a few days as I was away for the weekend and worked all day today.

Non, Sandow

Thanks CT your thoughts on this then, if possible

Strength Day-I like but can I add in Snatch grip High Pulls as well
Day 1 (strength day)

A. Power clean 5/4/3/5/4/3
B. Clean grip high pull 5/4/3
C. Power shrugs 3 x 5

Day 2 (functional hypertrophy zone)-I like, maybe add in snatch grip deads?

A. Barbell shrugs 8/7/6/7/8
B. Shrugs lying chest first on an incline bench 4 x 6-8

Day 3 (exhaustion training/triple set)
A1. Standing calf machine shrugs 4 x 6 + 2 sec. iso hold on each rep
A2. Isometric barbell shrug hold - shoot for a 30-45 sec. hold
A3. Loaded dumbbell shrugs stretch (basically hold on to two big dumbbells and let them stretch your traps) - shoot for stretches of 45-60 seconds

Repeat the triple set 3-4 times

looks good but my gym doesn’t have a standing calf machine, maybe add snatch grip dead here instead, done EDT style? or behind the beack shrugs?

Ca c’est Arthur Saxon … mais il ont tous des moustache alors l’erreur est facile!

CT if I may ask, how old are you/ just curios really

Hi CT,

I remember reading in one of your articles (I hope it was you) that you made use of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). Using a pretty hefty amount too…13 grams?

What are your thoughts on this supplement? Amount to take? Time to take it? Effectiveness?

Thanks

Hi CT,

Some people at my gym tell me that a high bar squat is bad for compresses the spine.
As an alternative, they suggest a low-bar squat. Is there any truth to this in your opinion?

If it were that dangerous there would be no olympic lifter left as most elite lifters back squat over 600lbs with a high bar position without any supportive equipment. And we’re talking lighter lifters here (guys in the 69-85kg class) bigger guys squat much more than that.

99% of all weight training injuries are due either to improper technique or excessive weight.

yo Stub Mastah,

earlier you wrote “To echo PX, I personally find that the more a trainee works on his traps, the harder it is to properly stimulate the lats and make them grow. Traps will grow easily, but if you work them too much, too often they can limit your overall gains.”

can you elaborate? i dont understand how the development of one muscle will inhibit the development of another.

Hey Coach,

Any special training considerations for an athlete using a carb-cycling diet (like the AD or Bodyopus)?

How would your recommendations vary if training for mass on one of these diets as opposed to a more traditional nutritional plan? How about for maximal strength?

Thanks very much!

When you showed the progress of your female bodybuilder you stated that she, through your recomdation, takes 50 grams of BCAA a day. My question is why so much? From the newer Japanese study on BCAA it showed that .44 grams per kilogram of body weight worked great taking it during the workout. For my 270 pound weight that equats to 53 grams of BCAA’s. I dont know the weight of your athleate but I am guessing she is taking any where from .73 to .84 grams of BCAA’s per kilogram of body weight. Have you had better luck with this, and do you spread the dosage throught the day or do you consume it during the workout?

Thanks

what will it take for a “white” guy to win the 100 meters? Do you think the old USSR had the best sprint program for men? If the USSR was still in existence today (along with the continued research at the same pace) would another “white” guy win the 100 meters?

Cool man. I thought he was smoking crack. I just wanted to run in by the Best. And I’m impressed that you can read my cut off text!!! (I was missing a few words for some reason)

Best

Well, actually it’s not really the development of the traps rather than excessive traps tightness/stiffness that can be a problem as well as overpowering rhomboids.

Tight traps will make vertical pulling less effective and it will be hard for the lats to receive maximal stimulation as the tight traps will impede the movement.

Overpowering rhomboids, while a very good thing for most athletes and postural concerns, will reduce the work performed by the lats during horizontal pulls.

I would not use the AD and Bodyopus to gain muscle. It can work, but it’s much harder to do… you need some carbs… even if the amount is small. I am a great proponent of low carbs dieting and used this approach for almost 2 years. While it always helped me loose fat fast, I was never able to gain a lot of muscle while on it. I did gain a little, but nothing to write home about.

If you want to stick with this mentality I suggest using Lyle McDonald’s Ultimate Diet 2.0, which I found to be great in that regard.

It’s basically three super low carbs/low calories days (similar to AD minus the high fat intake).

One 50/50 day: half the day is super low carbs/low cals … but you start your carb loading in the evening.

One full carb loading day.

Two moderate carbs, moderate calorie days.

Then back on the low-carbs days.

This is WAY too simplistic to make this diet work; you’ll have to look for his book to learn all the little details of it. It’s well worth the read.

Yes I spread the doses … but to be fair the dosing ranges from 25 to 50g per day (5 times of intake … 5-10g at a time) … most of the time it’s closer to 35g.

BTW the female bodybuilder is actually my girlfriend.

Did we have success? Well she started her contest dieting at 140lbs and 8 weeks later she was at 140lbs with a MUCH lower body fat percentage and increased strength.

What will it take? A genetic phenomenon that chooses track over football or basketball!!!

I think that a white guy will eventually run a sub 10 / 100m, but I strongly doubt that we will ever see a white world champ on that distance in the near future.

One of my guys is a 16 years old sprinter who ran a 10.61 / 100m in competition (despite suffering from shin splints up to a week before the race). It was a new Junior Canadian record but it wasn’t recorded due to a slightly favorable wind. He still holds the 100 and 200m Canadian junior records. He will run the 100 and 200m at the World junior games.

But that is still a LOOOOONG way to go until he can realistically believe that he might have what it takes to run a sub 10.

What’s that…something about “It’s easy to pick up women with a moustache like that?”

On a related note, what’s your opinion of Saxon-era lifts like the bent press or the reverse continental behind-the-neck press (both fantastic for terrifying the local gym owners, but the way).
