Hey what is a good overhead press and deadlift for novice class -220 class and are jerks allowed typically for the overhead press or just strict and push press kind of thing?

So one of the things about strongman is that there is no rulebook and everything is determined by the promoter of the particular competition you are competing in. Your best bet is to find out from them if jerks are allowed. OOOOOR your best bet is to NOT find out and NOT ask if they’re allowed and then just do them, because if they don’t say it’s illegal, it’s legal. That’s why you’ll hear really silly rules in the rules brief like ā€œYou can’t use tacky during farmer’s walksā€ or ā€œdon’t bounce the atlas stone off the floor and try to catch itā€: because people have DONE these things, haha.

I figured that might be the answer. I guess I will just train them since they are another way to get weight overhead. Any idea what is competitive for the lifts I mentioned in novice LW class?

I don’t expect to be really competitive going in but it would be nice to know ahead of time what the competition would look like.

None whatsoever. It really depends on the competition and who shows up. A stacked novice class (which is stupid) will need different lifts than a real one, and even then, with different event formats, 1rms don’t really tell the whole story.

The thing about this sport is that this will NEVER happen. I’ve had rules change AT the rules briefing. I’ve had events change in the MIDDLE of the competition. The best thing to remember is: it’s STRONGman: not GOODman. Being practiced and skilled is never a bad thing, but you need to show up ready to perform no matter what the events are.

But it’s why I enjoy it. There’s a reward for just being strong and in shape.

Good point. I guess I was just kinda hoping for a mile marker in my head. Shoot for the stars kind of thing.

Dude, it is so good to read things like this. You’ve got that mentality to make things happen, and god damn that goes a long way. So glad things are looking good for you, it definitely looks like you have taken all the right moves to take care of you and your family. Respect

Thanks man I appreciate it. It is nice to start seeing it through results.

I don’t know if I will get a workout in today and yesterday didn’t happen because of all the house craziness and my wife being sick but I snuck in and got a pr.

Clean and push press away 185 x 2 PR

Body weight is going to fall so fast I can feel it.

Barely got anything in. Everything has been crazy with the move.

Clean and push press
185 x 1c 2pp
185 x 1c 1 pp
155 x 1 c 4 pp
155 x 3 c 5 pp
155 x 1 c 4 pp

No pr today sadly but I am going to be attempting 185 for 3 when I feel like it is there.

Since moving has me missing a bunch of session I decided to treat the past week as an unexpected deload and I’m just working up to rm for some lifts trying to break a pr or two if it is there.

Squat worked up to 275 x 7

Deadlift will be on Friday and bench will likely be tomorrow then back at it again next week with loads adjusted for what I get this week.

Is this an in town move or are you changing location? Either way, moving is definitely a pain, just did it myself a few months ago. Good luck with the crazy times

Like 15 mi down the road from where I was. Big pain in the ass though. Has my schedule all messed up but I’ll be back to normal by next week.

Not terrible then, at least your not getting used to a whole new area. Congrats on the new place, may it be a faithful temple to your gains lol

Dude it better be. I am not so focused on them right now since leaning out is my number one priority but as soon as I hit like 10 percent body fat , hopefully January at the latest, I am gonna just focus on packing on as much muscle to my frame as possible. I mean I have tried before but never the right way. This will be my first serious attempt. So hopefully the rest of this year and next year have some good things in store for me. Definitely been good to me so far that is for sure.

Press 135 x 4

From all the max effort presses lately my shoulders feel like i got mauled by a bear. Decided fuck bench. It isn’t competition and I don’t really care about testing it. I just really want my press and deadlift to go up for this competition.

Still a long ways to go but I have come a long way

Deadlift 325 x 6

So this was a weird mix of tng and dead stop. I lowered slowly because I didn’t want to break the concrete and then took half a second before the next to ensure no momentum was involved in the rep. Also I strapped up so it grip wasn’t a limiting factor.

Edit: also the day after squat rm so idk if that meant weight on the table but I couldn’t resist here. Back to grinding next week.

Decided to go for 355 on deadlift. 2 reps could have had a 3rd but I tend to fuck up and hurt myself on these so I left one in the tank.

Probably the only person who tests Rows but did 225 for and ugly 5. I’d say the first one probably didn’t count though. So maybe 4.

Strong work on the rows. I don’t know if I’m just weak, or if I don’t know what I’m doing, but I can never row anything close to a respectable weight with a barbell without feeling like I’m just dry humping the bar into a shitty horizontal clean lol
