Part of me expects to see the news tonight with Steve Irwin alive and well and talking about the ‘publicity stunt’ that he has pulled today to promote his next documentary.
Yeah the guy was a dickhead but he was our kind of dickhead. It is pretty sad.
A while ago I was spear-fishing and I accidently speared a Ray thinking it was a flathead hiding under the sand. I had to rip the spear out of the the thing but I don’t feel so bad now. Silver lining?

I sure hope it’s a joke. But, I’m afraid it’s true. I miss Steve already. I’m kinda sad about this. I’ve been watching his show since it came out around 92’. This sucks! Why do all the cool people have to die young and the idiots get to live forever? First John Candy… now Steve Irwin. This really fuckin’ sucks!

He was a f*cking legend.
F*cking oath.
It’s mixed emotions here at work. Everyone is talking about it here and it’s funny to see how many people giggle when they first hear the news. I guess it’s just how some people handle shocking news, especially with Steve going out like that.
Could not stand the guy. While he may have tried to bring some attention to habitat destruction, I did not like the way he staged his encounters or handled the animals.
Well i guess it was the statistical odds. You can’t spend all your life getting close to the animals he did without a few serious accidents. Actually this was probably a better way to go. If a croc did it then the critics would have a field day…

A nice thought, but it’s been confirmed by police:
Guys, remember… stingray poison is very toxic. A shot to the chest with a decent amount of venom will kill your ass pretty damn quick. There’s plenty of folks every year who lose feet and lower legs from stepping on stingrays.
It was actually a bull ray, he was apparently swimming above the ray when it struck, apparently similar to a scorpion, by arching it’s tail. They reckon he was killed instantly as the barb penetrated his chest, apparently it’s similar to being stuck with a rifle bayonet.
I loved watching Steve Irwin, he was so passionate about what he believed in, and at least he made documentaries interesting. I reckon a lot of Aussies actually liked him deep down despite saying he was an embarrassment. At the moment on the TV they are replaying an interview he held about two years ago. It’s one of the funniest interviews I’ve ever seen, he will be missed.
I’m a little disappointed how some were ashamed of Steve.
The people from other countries who, thanks to Steve, truly believe(d) that Aussies are all “redneck” gung ho croc wrestlers are the same people whose opinion do not matter.
Personally, I loved the guy. He was real; from all accounts, what you saw on TV was what he was at heart. He was passionate about what he did and approached it with unparalleled enthusiam. How many people can say they do what they love for a living? How many people will die doing what they love?
He was just a happy guy; it was infectious. I always enjoyed watching him and I think millions of others did as well.
As far as I’m concerned, he spread tremendous goodwill and was an excellent ambassador for Australia. I’m just sad that as I near the end of my 2nd 4 month stint in Australia in a year, I never made the time to go watch him up North at the Australian Zoo.

All we heard at work this afternoon and training tonight was “Crikey!”.
He was a complete idiot and I’m only surprised it took this long for him to die via tetchy wildlife.
Obviously he missed the list of what might not kill you in Australia:
Some of the sheep.

I can see how a lot of Ozzies might have disowned him but i thought the bloke was class. He did so much for conservation and wildlife. So what if he was a little nuts?
Shanked by a fish is bloody harsh. A shame really.
Wow, this is rough. The guy had that air of invincibility, you couldn’t believe the shit he was doing but deep down inside you knew he would come out of it without a scratch anyways. He cared a lot, and I think he truly made difference. RIP Steve Irwin.
It is a damn shame. I met him and his wife when I was at their zoo in Australia. A crazy SOB but a genuinely nice guy. I feel really bad for her and his baby.
Steve was a good bloke who did a lot for the country through tourism, for raising environmental awareness, educating people, and giving people a laugh.
He was not an idiot exposing himself to danger without knowing the dangers and taking some measure of care, despite his showmanship.
Stingrays are very dangerous and although there are few fatalities, there are more injuries, and it is a known fact that they can easily puncture your chest leading to death … especially when the creatures lie hidden in the sand in shallow waters and people snorkel over the top of them then WAHM! right in the chest. Thank God it is a rare thing.
Compared to crocodiles, snakes, spiders, the irony is, the stingray is one of the few creatures that can / does kill you instantly with no chance to fight it off / apply antivenom or merely lose limbs.
In my opinion he should have been wearing a chain mesh shirt although I am not 100% sure that would have worked anyway. But maybe a metal chest plate would. He would have been well aware of the danger and it is a freaky thing what happened.
It is a sad thing he was a good bloke who loved life.
Any Aussie “ashamed” of him needs to pull their head out of their arse.
