Crimes Against Nutrition

I’d place this in the food porn thread, actually.

Husband’s only complaint is that the pasta is weird. I had to add more liquid as it failed to cook. Just…yuck. It’s sweet because of the tomato paste, sauce, and paprika, whereas I like a more Texas-y salty tomato taste.

This is not a crime. It’s genius

I’m going to politely disagree. I love stuff like that with a few thick cuts of bread or a fresh bun.

It definitely is a matter of personal taste - if the pasta hadn’t been poorly cooked, it would have been a “love” thing for husband. Which he’ll never have again, lol. I see it as being similar to chili and salsa preferences - I just don’t like sweet versions of dishes like that.

Speaking of crimes against nutrition and sweet tomato sauce, Sunday was my granddaughter’s annual pizza and ice cream cake family birthday party. Somehow they’ve stumbled onto the world’s sweetest pizza sauce, and it’s atrocious, though I of course ate two large pieces. Even my husband says “no” regarding the sauce, though he of course also ate it, because we’re nothing if not hungry cooperators in food atrocities. We also hungrily cooperated in cookies and chips and dip and pretzels.

All the pizza where my parents live has sweet sauce. My husband absolutely hates it. I prefer my pizza with a less sweet sauce now, but when I go home to visit I enjoy the sweet sauce. I think it’s probably more for the sake of nostalgia than anything though.

It’s definitely regional. I was involved in a writing group several years ago, and when we had our annual retreat one of our member’s chili was a huge high point. I was stunned when I tried it. I’d really only had Texas chili previously and was not prepared at ALL for the sweet Upstate NY abomination I encountered. Subsequent retreats I packed food for that night’s dinner. I’m anti-bean, too, and taken altogether it was just something I couldn’t manage.

Salsa in New England is difficult. Like, how hard is it? TOMATOES. And jalapeños! With some onion. Jalapeños IN, sugar OUT. DO IT CORRECTLY.

Not me. I love them. Never liked them before I met my husband. He has broken me in so many ways.

I don’t like sweet sauce, but I’m also a hypocrite because I will do any number of unbiblical acts for pineapple pizza.

It’s a holdover from 80 years ago when all they could get were shitty acidic tomatoes .

Also, tomatoes should never be in guacamole. That’s what salsa is for.

I only like sweet if the tomatoes its made with are sweet. Tangy, spicy, and herbaceous are all good.
I don’t think I’ve had a sauce that was remarkably sweet.

I’m wondering if I’ve ever actually had sweet tomato sauce.

Happy Cake Day!

Thanks. I’ve been here since 98 or 99. A long time.

If @BethB’s parents live where I think they live, you have, and you LIKE it. :grimacing:

I don’t care whether they are or not, but since there’s always salsa when there’s guac, I’ll agree for the sake of agreeableness.

Happy Cake Day, @doogie!

They’re about 50 miles east north east.

I’ve had some that is sweet in a sense, but not like coca-cola sweet. I prefer tart/citrus with basil & oregano.

Best I’ve had was from a turkish family place. It was, as best I can describe, brightly flavored. :man_shrugging:t2:. I know that doesn’t translate.

The tomatoes I grow are very sweet. Almost like grapes. Throw a little basil and anise in and you definitely have a sweet sauce. Not artificially sweet though. I throw some lemon juice in it to give it some tartness.

Sauce garden.

I shall consult with my (native Texan) Pittsburgh son.

Should there be any remaining confusion, I will myself sample both pizza and salsa next time I visit.

I actually thought about that, in that he’d be a good reference point in knowing your pallet.

There are a ton of good pizza places around, with a pretty wide variety.

The two places that everybody says are “the best” Mineo’s and Beto’s I’m completely indifferent to.

@EmilyQ My parents live in the redneck area. @SkyzykS is a city boy. He has access to more variety than my mountain folk family does.

I kinda am. My back yard borders washington county though. I’m as far south as you can get on a streetcar.

I’m actually in oakland as we speak, and I hate it.

Lol. We used to go to a hippie shop out there! Where my parents live you can get shitty Italian or shitty Italian. There are no other options. Pittsburgh has actual variety. That’s what I like about where I am now. Any style of food is available.
