Creepiest Commercial Ever?

Is it just me, or is this the creepiest commercial ever to be put on television?

I saw it on tv tonight and for half a second I thought it was an old commercial. Then I realized he was wearing an iPod and he jsut wasn’t real. I actually felt creeped out.

Am I just a big girl, or is this just not right?

There’s a name for this phenomenon: the Uncanny Valley. The idea is that we can accept robots that look mostly artificial and robotic. We can accept something looks and acts totally human, at least at first glance. But when the robot (or CGI character, in this case) doesn’t look to be artificial, but just doesn’t look quite right, it creeps us out. There’s something wrong that we cannot name.

Holy shit, I saw that too. It really had me fooled for a second. It’s definitely creepy.

That’s interesting, nephorm. I’m familiar with the concept but wouldn’t have been able to name it. In this case though, I think it’s pretty easy to name the various things that are wrong. I refuse to watch it again though.

I had pretty much the same reaction.

Human faces are probably the hardest thing to fake with CGI, because we’re so attuned to them. CGI Orville is extremely creepy.

Second thing is: The guy is dead, how about leaving him and his family a little dignity? Did his last will state he wished to become a marketing prop?

No brother, this is the creepiest commercial ever made.

I saw this commercial last night and we were talking about how much it creeped us out!

Grave of The Fireflies is next on my Netflix list.

Uncanny Valley is an interesting concept.

What about “The Little Monster”?

Wild Celt…is your avatar from Father Ted…? lol

Maybe its CGI. Looks more like a mask, IMO.

Yeah, that’s Father Jack alright.

Mr. Chill,

You talking about me, or Orville?

I just thought the commercial was stupid.

Greatest anime movie ever. Incredibly moving.

I <3 Father Ted, and especially Father Jack…got most of the episodes on my computer. I love the one where he drank house cleaner and they thought he was dead for ages lol

(And yes I have heard Grave of The Fireflies is the most moving movie done in animation, I’m really looking forward to seeing it this weekend :o)

Solid post, neph. I never heard of that before.

Pretty interesting stuff.

This is solved by SkyNet in 2029 on their T-800 model.

what… the… hell…

The ‘pickle’ guy literally scared me.

Did they actually put that on television?

I was going to make some remark about ‘how sexy’ their solving of the problem was, but then I realized I wasn’t sure if the T-800 model you’re speaking of was Kristanna Loken from T3 whom I was thinking of, or Arnold from T2…

Oh what the hell, I guess they’re both sexy in their prime.

Is there something to get from that commercial? Because I didn’t get it… Maybe it was the pickle man was so obsessed with the meat? Geez.
