Credit Card at Soda Machine

So now if you really have to have that sugar water, but you have no cash, you can pay for it with your credit card. So in essence you are now able to go into debt and get fatter at the same time. Or maybe you can rack up some frequent flier points, get a free ticket and offset the cost of having to buy an extra seat for your fat ass.
Humanity has fallen another notch.

Sweet now I can get a coke. I usually only have a dollar, not the extra 25 cents every coke machine wants these days.

Not very innovative. I would’ve stuck a little ATM right above the buttons. Walk away like a pimp with your $60 fast cash and coke (-$10 service fee).

yeah this isn’t exactly new. They’ve had this at my school for atleast 2 years, sorta nice when you have 6 straight hours of classes and want a candy bar and a powerade.

Cool guys!!

Seriously, I never use cash if I don’t have to. I always use my “visa check card” when possible; I don’t actually charge anything, it’s simply deducted from my checking account. It’s easier to deal with then cash.

I think it’s odd that anyone uses cash, actually.

Ive seen those around for a long time. They have them around the cafe and lounges at my college. I use my debt card! I personally dislike how much something like a salad cost vs a large (12oz cup) of pudding or jello. Pudding/jello= 1.05. Pizza (nice large sice of cheese) 2.00. Small salad with dressing= 3.50. So making the right choice when you are making 8$ an hour and spend most of the day on campus isn’t easy. I spend about 60$-70$ a week just on gas and eating breakfast/lunch.

x2. I don’t carry cash over like ~20 dollars because it is altogether too big a pain in the ass.

this is great. sprite zero is the greatest diet drink ever created closely followed by coke zero. this of course doesn’t include fresca which is not marketed as such.

Interesting. I am NEVER without cash. I generally use credit (or American Express at places that take it). But you never know when you need cash. There are just so many scenarios I can come up with where it could avoid a major inconvenience. I usually have at least a hundred or two in my front pocket and a 500 (4 hundreds, 5 twenties) “emergency fund” that I never touch behind my drivers license. Maybe I’m just old school, but cash is king, IMHO of course.

sarcasm detector is broken?

I had posted a pic outside of the Emergency room that was a vending machine that dispensed Pizza, Chicken Wings, and Potato wedges. Blech.

Im assuming the $500 is in your wallet behind the drivers license? Thats crazy…I wish I could have that behind mine haha. I’m with you though, I always have cash on me. $40 is the norm…but sometimes go with $20. Just easy if I need to stop in quickly at a store and grab food or what not.

I used one of these yesterday morning to get a redbull (finals week). All I had to do was just tap my Visa checkcard on the machine, it was awesome. Tap card, get redbull, study for finals! Technology is rad!

I hardly ever carry cash either. It’s too much of a pain in the butt. Everywhere takes debit cards so there really is no need to be carrying more than a few bucks on you for incidentals.

Why is the USA so behind the times in technology. Magnetic stripe cards? Really? What is this, 1975?

In Hong Kong, they have something called the Octopus card. It’s basically an RFID based debit card. You can use it on any public transportation, supermarket, 7-11, most vending machines, taxis, etc. The card can auto-deduct from your checking account when funds run low, or if you’re paranoid about privacy, you can refill with cash. People get the RFID chip embedded in their phone, watch, wallet, etc. Imagine getting on a bus and swiping your phone. Don’t feel like carrying a wallet around? No problem. They’ve been using this for well over a decade.

I’m sure other cities have the same tech. What’s our greatest tech? EZ-Pass?

Sounds like a easy place to put a carding device to capture your card info. That RFID based card is even easier to steal your info.

Or I can get a bottle of water. Or I can get a diet coke. Or I can get a Coke Zero.

If you think that a credit card swipe on a vending machine is such horrible news, you’re a dumbass. It’s no worse than any other soda vending machine to start, and you act like every person with a card is using a credit card that they can’t pay off.

So you go and continue being a raging dumbass. In the meantime, yes, I think I WILL go rack up some credit card points (which I generally use for flights) because I’ve got a long class and didn’t have time to wash my water jug out this morning.

There is no personal info on it. Probably just the card number and amount in it. It would be a pretty ballsy move to set up a scheme to steal the info, then refill a card with a new amount, since they would know right away that your card has the wrong amount on it. Perhaps it is possible, but I haven’t heard of it happening.

The most common type of fraud is using a child or senior reduced fare card.

EDIT: and this was in 2006

I’m the other way…I never carry cash…I get 300-500 dollars back per year on the 1% credit card rebates…since I pay in full I’m up that amount each year…I’m ‘that guy’ you see buying a bottle of water for 79 cents with his Visa…

Then again when I first starting workin in DC I stopped one morning to get a cup of coffee at one of those places that I forget the name of and when I gave them my card for the $1.29 cup of coffee and they said they don’t take credit cards I felt pretty much like an ass.
