That isn’t necessarily an issue as long as you’re adequately recovered.
You could always set out your own program and then tell your trainer that’s what you want to do. If he rejects it out of hand or comes up with spurious reasons it isn’t appropriate for you (ie ‘x will make you bulky’ or ‘that isn’t functional’), that’s an indication he probably isn’t much good. If he’s enthusiastic and has ideas to add to it or tweak it, I think that’s an indication he’s probably OK as a trainer.
I meet with my trainer today and will let you all know how that goes. If anyone is keeping up with my log do you have core workout recommendations? I know there are many things I could do but wanted to write it into my weekly schedule and am open to ideas. Thank you so much!
It depends if you’re talking about devoting an entire day to “core workout” or if you just want to find ways to work some “core” into the rest of your routine, I think.
I don’t really do much direct “core” work, but I do a yoga class or two every week, and within my workouts I’ll occasionally include loaded carries (waiter walks are an absolute killer; suitcase walks are also fantastic; both of these can be done with a dumbbell or kettlebell).
But if you’re looking for more direct core work, there are some good articles on this site:
@ActivitiesGuy WOW! That’s a huge help and thank you for so much options/feedback. Yoga didn’t even cross my mind but I bet that absolutely would work my core. That’s why I ask and not always research because I want someone’s direct opinion and even the yoga idea sounds like a fun change.
Yeah, besides the fact that I do actually like yoga (the people are usually fun if you find a good studio), one of the other reasons I keep up my weekly yoga class is that otherwise I’m fairly lazy about core work. I count on the yoga class to be my catch-all rehab / prehab / core / balance work, basically.
Yep, yoga fan myself but I don’t do it often enough.
Also, for what it’s worth, when you start lifting heavier and get better at bracing, your core will be engaged on all of the lifts @MarkKO mentioned. There are a lot of guys on here that do no additional core work and are ripped.
I on the other hand, do additional core work and am not ripped - lol.
I should have added, you’ll probably be fine just doing a few sets of any of those exercises at the end of your sessions. No need to have a whole day devoted to your abs.
You’re starting off in a great spot with a great attitude. I believe you can have a lot of success with this process if you apply yourself, which it seems like you are!
The coming months can be an amazing time for a lifter. It definitely was for me, and it opened my eyes to potential I never knew I had. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the process, enjoying the outcome and letting yourself get sucked into it all. Enjoy it all!
@twojarslave you just made it 1,000 times more exciting I am looking forward to it and even with a little progress it makes me fired up!! I see that I might actually have muscle potential and my weights are getting heavier. Thank you so much for helping me through all of this.
@The_Myth thank you for the comment on my picture. It’s intimidating to put out there but I want to participate to the fullest. I feel like I’m getting older but great and have more energy. Your picture looks really good and you need to give yourself more credit Mr.!!
Lol, thanks. It took me a while to post a pic but eventually I figured why not, right? For the most part, this is a pretty supportive community and you get some pretty honest feedback and tremendous support.
FWIW, three years ago I weighed about 230 and I’m down to 190 at 52 yo. It takes time, but time goes fast.
@countrygirl2016 I’m afraid it looks like an upper body lucky dip to me. I may be missing something, but I can’t see any real logic beyond ‘oh, well, she’ll be tired and sore by the end so that should work ok’. Again, I could be wrong. All I can do is speak from my own limited perspective based on my own experiences.
For what it’s worth, I am confident you could set out a much better program yourself. One with progression.
