Well, yes and no. I think we tend to brag about our kids athletics here, so it seems like they are more athletic than they probably are as a whole. I like to think most people have a sport they can adopt to keep active that they can be at least semi-competitive in, but part of it is finding what is right. I think some sort of sport or active hobby is important to staying healthy, but that is partially because it is for me.
I am basically tall, heavyset, tend to add weight unless I am strict about my diet and I do lots of cardio. If I lift weights I add muscle quickly. I’m noticing it even now when I’m in my 40’s. If the calculator is right I’m up 5# lean muscle mass and 3# fat from the on again off again I’ve been doing since I quit karate and signed up here. If I’m strict with my diet and exercise I expect even better. I’ve never been good at the cardio thing, but I worked hard at it for a decade and was doing pretty well until this last year. I was full height at age 13 and adult proportions by age 14. 6’4" 220# and lean at 14. I wrestled and threw shot and discus until high school. I was wrestling with the seniors at age 14 as there was no one in my weight class in the county.
My wife is about average height and slender, but has amazing endurance. She can do that distance running thing without training for it. She has the second smallest wrists in the family. She was full grown at age 16, 5’4" 100#. She is probably 110-115# now coming up on her 40th with the annoying ability to eat whatever she wants, not exercise and not gain weight.
I have 4 kids. They are all home schooled, so not in any formal phys ed class.
My oldest is the fencer. He is 16 and most likely full grown. He is 6’5"-6’6" 190#, and has been devoted to fencing since he was 9. He is hyper-competitive. His endurance wasn’t as good as some of the other fencers, so we made a program and he was out for 3 hours a day training on top of his regular 2 hours in fencing class 5 days a week. He is tied for the second thickest wrists in the family. I’ve never been sure what to say about his ability to put on fat as he has been growing fast and fencing for so long that whatever we feed him, he barely keeps up. When I look at his proportions I think he takes after his mother more except in height. His inseam is 4" longer than mine, he is a little taller, but I weighed 40# more than him at his age and I had the 6 pack back then too. I was 220 before I started lifting weights and really didn’t hit them properly until I was 16 or 17, so it isn’t just exercise for the difference between us.
My second son is 14, 5’10" and about 100#. He plays video games, and occasionally does parkour and dodgeball with his friends, but mainly he is sedentary. He has that eat whatever he wants and not gain weight genes, but I can’t get him to sustain any activity long enough to find out if he has any endurance capacity. He lives off of waffles and maple syrup as much as we let him. I suspect the main difference between him and his older brother is diet and exercise. He has the slenderest wrists in the family.
My daughter is 11. She is 5’6" already, and has a metabolism and body type like mine. She also has the third thickest wrists in the family. She is active, loves to ride her bike, and just signed up for a triathlon class. She may end up like her eldest brother with triathlon in place of fencing, but too early to tell. I’m hoping so as she gains weight like I do and it is a pain getting kids to diet.
My youngest is a boy, age 7. He is tied with his eldest brother for second thickest wrists in the family. He is a beefy little monkey that likes gymnastics and climbing on anything. He has my metabolism as well, and is fond of gymnastics but can’t really follow instructions to save his life.
So I don’t know. I know genetics is part of it, but genetics without drive is a waste. I never pushed as hard as I could have in sporting endeavors as I was always more focused on school and then career, but I suspect I have the genetics so I could have been good at power sports. I didn’t though, and didn’t get the results my son is.
