Coronavirus - What Happened?

This is stupid. But so is saying “thank god everyone can still line up to get tattoos in Joey’s garage!” You’re talking about socialism as if it’s something anyone in here is advocating for. Hell when’s the last time anyone said the US should be a socialist country on PWI? Ever? I remember no occurrences.

The precise reason these places have to get shut down is because people are too fucking stupid to realize that going to the doctor and the grocery store right now makes sense. Going to the tanning salon, movie theater, and finishing up that tattoo on the back don’t.

Same here, and the liquor stores are run by the government. In Quebec the weed stores are open, same deal.

Pharmacies will remain open in America I wouldn’t be surprised if marijuana stayed open as it is used for medical purposes.

Based on what is in the article, he might not have anywhere else to go. The question here is what do you do with people who rent rooms and need to be isolated? Put them in a hotel? There is no arrangement available, and if he were to stay with family or some other friends instead then it’s putting even more people at risk.

Don’t quote me, but…

A long time ago whiskey and all other distilled spirits were considered way more than just booze. It was basically a food, a means of exchange, like a whole bunch of stuff.

It doesn’t necessarily apply now, but there could be some laws still on the books about that.

But yeah, taxes too.

Stay optimistic man. Humanity has triumphed through many pandemics prior to this one, So long as mass hysteria doesn’t induce complete societal collapse we should bounce back post plague. In Aus (we are looking at an exponential growth curve similar to or worse than that of Italy (with a lower CFR due to the avg age within our populace being far lower)… We are now talking about locking suburbs down, I think it’ll only take about a month or two until it’s full on insanity.

The concept of a pandemic is to contain it early, prior to it being highly visible. With the concept of exponential growth the differentiation between “everything’s fine” and “societal collapse” may be within a timeframe of 3-4 weeks! Without resorting to outright authoritative measures, I can’t see how we can expect to control the virus. Bondi beach is finally closed, but two days ago it was PACKED full of people partying, not adhering to social distance recommendations… we just recently let another cruise ship dock in our country (wherein if I recall correctly numerous inhabitants tested positive

This is slightly amusing… stores that sell products designed to induce a state of intoxication within the user are considered “essential services”…

I have serious doubts than any European economy will recover from this. This will be years to fix, and we haven’t even stopped the underlying problem yet.

We may face an ecnomic recession, but its not the first time throughout modern society wherein this has happened (the Great Depression… the Great Recession in the late 2000’s… ) Though perhaps this will reach Great Depression levels of severity… only time will tell. I believe in the end humanity will prevail, even if it takes many years to get things back to normal

If the Economy crashes this badly I imagine Trump (and Morrison here) will have a very hard time getting re-elected.

Yes, but we will be in a new normal, and it may be a worse one than we have grown up with.

Who knows? People reach to the familiar in times of crisis. It seems a secondary issue at present tbh.

There’s gonna have to be whole lot of questions asked and answered after this. Domestic fuckery is merely one of them.

What is the long term life expectancy of Chinese dependent manufacturing?

What is the effect of massive quantitive easing on a global scale?

Genuinely, I have no idea.

Neither do I… but you’re post has made me anxious (prone to generalised anxiety). I’m trying to not think about the serious economic ramifications this disease will have

I doubt I’m the only one on here with crippling anxiety over the prospect of an economic meltdown.

You most certainly aren’t. All we can do is our best. There’s gonna be a lot of rebuilding to do once this is over, we may as well put our backs into it.

Maybe things go back to normal, if so, cool. Maybe they don’t, in which case, grab a shovel.

I have serious concerns about my own current job. But all I want is a capacity to dig in and help.

So I’ve been a white collar guy for a while, I’ll do what I can to be useful, that’s all any of us can do.

If that fails? I’ll become a toilet paper overlord.

Edit: whatever happens after this, the time of China as a member of respectable nations has to end. That ship has sailed, and it bore plague rats upon it.

Yeah. The world needs to tell China that Taiwan exists and they just have to accept it. Taiwan warned the WHO about this virus but the WHO is in China’s pocket so they kept quiet until it was no longer possible to do so.

Hey, at least we got cheaper iPhones and tv’s out of it.

Sedation is essential for some people in times like these.

It looks like it’s going to be most of the world. At least Europe and North America weren’t doing too bad in the first place, but a lot of poor countries are going to get fucked up bad.

Unlikely not to be worse than what we grew up with. All experts in finance and economics are already saying that 2008 is nothing compared to this, and we don’t even know when it will end yet.

IL is under a “shelter in place” ruling by the Governor. Today, after my run along the lake front, I did my grocery shopping (full meat, vegetable, and baked goods selection, canned goods were a bit picked over as was dried pasta but everything was available), then stopped by my mechanic to drop off my car. Later in the day, I picked it up, got it washed at a brushless wash place, and then stopped by a bike/skate shop for a T-shirt for my son.

Basically, everything that’s not a gym, spa, hair place, or nail place is “essential”.

Well china has been rather secretive for decades. initially when the pandemic broke out, they tried to stifle word of mouth/journalism escaping the country regarding the condition at stake. It was only when the amt of cases was well into the thousands/had already spread that it was made public. Journalists were penalised/locked up for attempting to get work of mouth out

China has a strong authoritative regime, has been known for aggressively censoring any body of thought that disagrees with ideology pushed from the ‘government’. Countless human rights violations (working conditions, cultural genoocide of Ulighur muslims etc) and far, far more… If we were to list the sheer number of violations towards human rights China has committed over the past few decades we’d have a book… China however is rather powerful, manufactures products/parts for prices unparalleled to Western, democratic, secular societies… thus they get leeway because… money… trade.

Not going to lie, I’ve started smoking grass more frequently (up from once per month) in response to this whole epidemic. I’m very anxious, all the time… it’s the only thing that really calms me down, though it is drug abuse and I’m thus ashamed. I will be talking to my psychiatrist shortly about more effective coping mechanisms. I haven’t been sleeping recently either due to anxiety (at worst I’ll go 2+ days without sleep prior to my body shutting down and falling asleep). If I If the proospect of benzodiazepines/Z-drugs are brought up I think I’ll stick with cannabis.

Meditation can be helpful, but it’s dependant on how bad the anxiety is at any given time.

This in particular scares the shit out of me… growing up in a future Great Depression style era, wherein access to adequate employment may be a prospect no longer feasible… Perhaps the dollar will be worth practically nothing?

Hopefully China manages to be hit hard by this recession, don’t want them gaining excess power whilst the powers of say The United States, Europe dwindles… the outcome could be disastrous. Though such a worry is fear mongering, I’d hypothesise it’s incredibly unlikely this would occur

I’m fortunate because my job is already about helping people who need it the most. And I can essentially work full time for a long long time as the number of people who are going to need help is only going to go up.

Bad times suck but they also recharge my batteries. My energy level has been through the roof which is strange since I’ve sat on my ass more than typical.

I love the idea of people being ready to grab a shovel! No doubt that time will come shortly. If the majority of humans have your attitude we don’t have much need for concern. Just need to be told when and where to dig.

I wasn’t doing all those weights just for the sake of a shapely backside (even if that was a happy side effect)

Time for us all to have courage.

Has anybody heard anything about North Korea?

It was a basket-case to start with. I can only imagine what’s going on there now as it pertains to COVID-19.
