Coronavirus - What Happened?

Probably which household implements would be most capable of opening an artery or caving in a skull while I sleep.

“Physical activity is allowed as long as it’s not in group.”

People are exploiting this and playing dumb and the result is that there is more and more people on the streets.

I do go out for a walk every day but I do it at night, around 10, when I’m sure nobody is around. If everybody goes out for a walk at 4 in the afternoon, it’s a mess.

I used to think the same. It’s the only hope we have. It’s absolutely vital that we stay home. We can’t afford any more infected people. Our Healthcare system is saturated to its fullest capacity.

Some cities are removing benches from sidewalks to discourage people even more.

I wish I was locked home with my girlfriend. The fact that she’s only 20 minutes by car and knowing that I can’t go and pick her up because I risk jail time makes it even worse.

The virus isn’t yet as big of a problem in the US as it’s for us in Italy. That’s why people over there can’t understand it yet.

Man, that’s bloody awful. I’d go ballistic. You got this though, Italy will come through this, we all will.

The difference is that it is mostly concentrated in one region. The measures in Italy will hopefully keep other regions from looking like Lombardia. In the USA it’s too late as it is in every state already.

I hope so, but people have to freaking adhere.

Anyway, since we spoke of Naples in the other thread
Today a video from a guy in Naples was posted to the net, showing that major streets and squares are still full of people walking around. The absurdity is that almost everybody was wearing a surgical mask too.

Talk about ass backwards.

The Netherlands is taking a different approach, not exactly what I was talking about because they are going for “herd immunity” and not doing much to control the spread, but we can watch what happens over there to see how it could go otherwise, for better or worse.

From Bill Gates’ blog:

What do you think of the current approach the Netherlands is currently taking to combat this virus? They are not going to a full lockdown but rather try to spread it controllably in order to work towards “ herd immunity ” .

The only model that is known to work is a serious social distancing effort (“shut down”). If you don’t do this then the disease will spread to a high percentage of the population and your hospitals will be overloaded with cases. So this should be avoided despite the problems caused by the “shut down”. If a country doesn’t control its cases then other countries will prevent anyone going into or coming out of that country. I think the Netherlands will end up doing what other countries are doing.

I see posts about how this violates the constitutional right to freedom of assembly. While that is true, it would make sense to avoid any large assemblies for the moment.

I suppose in a heavily populated urban area this would become a problem, downtown here would be the same. In my neighborhood there are way less people outside than usual.

Well, you could go outside, but you absolutely need to stay away from other people. If people can’t manage that themselves then let the government tell them what to do. Outside here is no problem, the grocery stores is what worries me.

Yeah, that is a problem. I don’t understand that sort of mentality. I haven’t gone downtown lately, but the east side of Ottawa is dead.

I’m “forced” to largely stay inside (backyard for some weights work) with my wife and daughter. We have WI-FI, PS4, and a setup where if I want to work 80 hours a week I can. I usually talk to my siblings kids every other day on FaceTime.

From what I’ve read people during the Great Depression had it slightly worse than me. I think they lived a bit shorter lives, had a bit less food, and honestly I don’t think areas like where I’m at even had 4G. I will admit I haven’t read much about it lately but I’m pretty sure some had to use dial up and downloading an MP3 took forever.

Bars and restaurants operate under licenses. Public parks can be closed to the public. Parades need permits. Loitering is against the law. It’s only when the “right” to go to a bar is affected that Americans suddenly become constitutional scholars.

Agreed. I’d also add that the constitution isn’t a suicide pact, that’s not its purpose.

What are you talking about? They could watch baseball and boxing on their radios. It was a great time to be alive.

I wonder how many of those babies are OK with giving the government the right to kill its citizens (capital punishment)?

Harrowing. This is gonna get fucking ugly.

That’s true. I have heard some of the games watched on the radio did not come in well though. Nothing worse than a baseball game with static. For the most part at least it seems that baseball was largely as boring then as it is now.

I kid not looking for any baseball is the greatest sport discussions.

Jesus wept.

The future of America? I don’t think so. Future employees of the children of Asian immigrants, yes.
