Coronavirus - What Happened?

He said something equivalent while passive aggressively “arguing” with Neil DeGrasse Tyson about the moon landing being fake. But at least he accepted he was wrong in the end. The amount of effort required to convince him was more than enough for me not to take him seriously especially when it comes to anything to do with science. But I do think he’s a pretty smart guy who’s also a really good host.

Think about this. I think I noticed the lightbulb finally pop up over his head when Tyson told him how impossible it would be to keep it a secret due to the amount of manpower involved. THAT was what I’m speculating finally convinced him.

That’s because you Western degenerates always make movies where outsiders and/or outcasts in the relevant professions are the only ones who are right when disasters to world ending shit happens.

Independence Day, The Core, the first 4 Die Hard movies, every fucking Michael Bay movie with pencil pushing government nerds involved. Oh, and that underrated Nicolas Cage movie called Knowing, which adds even DIVINE shit to the list.

:joy:

Go watch China’s The Captain where they tried to pull off this formula, only the group of outsiders were relegated to delivering exposition to the audience from some kid’s apartment with no contribution to any of the events in the movie in any way because the government has to save the day.

They centered it around the heroism of the top brass in the CCP heroically staring at their navigation screens for 2 hours after they lose audio communication while a government pilot on a commercial flight was heroically trying to steer his plane out of a storm single-handedly while the flight stewardesses were heroically telling everyone to remain in their seats and trust that the authorities have everything under control…

He successfully lands the plane by doing a Denzel in the end. Not taking anything away from the dude. He was a badass. This was very loosely based on a “real life” event.

But once that happened, the CCP heroically deployed every single fucking department including the fucking military with tanks and shit(seriously, I’m not making this up. Or at least that’s what I recall after smacking myself in the head really hard at multiple points in the movie.) to the airport to save the passengers who were casually exiting the plane. It was like a Zucker Brothers comedy.

In a Western movie, the CCP would have at least received a phone call from one of these outsiders who spotted something all the top scientists couldn’t spot and conjured up some plot device which would allow this advice to be delivered to the pilot by Morse code or some shit like that, which would lead to saving the day.

You did this to yourselves, fucking cowboys.

I don’t doubt it. There’s a decent chance he’s just being provocative for the sake of attracting listeners and if it means he’s got to act like he believes in some bs conspiracy theory from time to time then so be it. That’s probably true of others as well.

Yeah, I’m gonna agree. I wasn’t sure if his insistence that 911 was a government conspiracy way back was an act or if he really believed it. I think it’s a combination of both. He does weird stuff like using that floatation tank or whatever you call it in his private time. I also recall the “Brazilian MMA fighter” prank he pulled on his viewers with Eddie.

Well, whatever sells. But if you admit you know balls about a subject, don’t make absolute statements when you have such a large audience. Questioning everything to promote healthy discussion is fine and a pretty good thing to do when looking at the big picture. I respect that part.

I just don’t have the attention span to watch these podcasts anymore. Nothing to do with him nor his type of content.

You missed the entire point of my post. I did not in any way say that THAT PODCAST was a conspiracy. Nor did I say it should be silenced. I said, in long winding words,
that things like that podcast frustrated me because of the massive misunderstandings that always happen with people who have no experience in the topics hearing them. Please try again.

I really do not give a shit about podcasts. Don’t get me wrong, I occasionally listen to them, but they do not constitute the majority of my free time nor do I want them to. I read the real, actual studies. This week I am currently somewhere above 50 studies in various areas based on my citation manager inputs. I have days where I read more and less. I don’t give a flying fuck about pop culture discussion, my point was about the reality of the situation and research in general being far more complicated and “gray” than most of these pop culture discussions sound.

As I said to someone else, I am a fan of free information flow and easy access to it, so I support pop culture discussions of science wholeheartedly. However, no matter how awesome they are they still do not reflect the nuanced reality of the fields they talk about.

Yes. Because unfortunately the day after the podcast was the first day YOU became aware of AZ researching ivermectin. It was NOT the first day they decided to research it.

Hey, at least he knows the lane he is in. I give him props for honesty. I don’t have any problem with Joe and I’ve listened to his podcast in the past. I just don’t want to spend my time on it this time.

100%. Ins seems to have misplaced my stance on this topic. I am NOT anti-ivermectin. I am simply trying to describe some of the nuances involved.

Sigh… You are undoubtedly completely correct about this.

Went to a wedding reception thing (low key, not formal) last night and saw lots of friends/aquaintences I used to MTB with but haven’t seen in 2 years b/c of the pandemic and life getting crazy. It was good to see them again and they are still folks I really like as good people, but damn, it was disappointing to learn how many are anti-vax. Just saying some blatantly false and/or alarmist stuff. Had one of them say he doesn’t want to risk getting the vax… While then telling the story of how he overshot a 40’ jump guineapigging it which resulted in the broken ankle and boot he was wearing. These are folks with little regard for their wellbeing on a bike and long, gnarly injury histories to prove it, but saying the vaccine risk is too much for them? Similarly, dudes there who put $100 of mystery powder up their nose most weekends also saying they are unvaxxed because they are scared of possible side effects.

Just… disappointing. Seems more like its more sticking with a “rebeliousness” or “punk” pattern than an actual thought out position.

And with the delta variant surging and the long, rainy PNW fall/winter/spring approaching in a few months i fear that, while society won’t shut down again, we will start having to “opt-out” of social events, meetups, even professional events due to everything being indoors and so many unvaccinated people acting normal. Outdoor events, like the reception at an outdoor brewery beer garden or a golf tournament feel safe… but I feel uneasy about indoor events, and i KNOW my wife will veto them.

It’s infuriating isn’t it. The double standards are so obvious, how can they not see the risk of vaccine is vastly lower than that of the lifestyle they’re living…

Weird because in my experience ( Southern CA) it is those that are healthy that see no need for the vaccine. It is the fat and out of shape that scream loudest about the vaccine all while pulling down their masks to stuff their fat faces with fast food. It is their eating and exercise habits that put them most at risk.

But is it just for that, or is it also to smoke?

I didn’t make the picture man. Most of my county is obese anyways and we are a very conservative county that without looking it up I’m going to guess has an incredibly low vaccination rate.

The point of it is more that we have people who are scared to “put that in their body” when they are already putting it a bunch of horseshit.

The difference is we have evidence to suggest the vaccine can help you. We don’t have that about anything in that picture and it’s pretty well established as shit.

I know I always pull down MY mask when I smoke my crack!
