I was only saying that I don’t see it in my personal circumstances. I cants speak for other universities. But it is harder to push this in college classes because they are (theoretically anyway) designed to prepare you for career. You can talk all you want about whatever woke crap you want, but at the end of the day if you design a bridge poorly you’re still going to kill a lot of people when it fails. And when you can’t understand facts and experimental design, you’re still going to suck at your job.
There’s a lot more resistance to this at the higher levels due to the repercussions and the fact that it’s (rightfully) perceived as wasted time by profs. At high school I don’t think those are as much factors.
Just as I was hoping that the vaccine existence would bring Covid-19 under reasonable control (and I was figuring that we would have to have seasonal injections of whatever variant like with the influenza vaccine) and we would be able to go to live entertainment events and mostly get back to work, I saw this story from up here in Canada.
This makes me think of the movie ‘I am Legend’ in which Will Smith’s character’s wife was almost screened out of evacuating New York City. In that and recent year ‘Planet of the Apes’ movies the death toll was catastrophic, and I thought that a known death rate of around 3% would leave us nowhere near the point this article is suggesting might transpire.
Out of all the things I disliked about Trump this is far and away the biggest practical complaint (i.e. not about personal behavior) I have. It is inexcusable, no matter what other mistakes were going to be made in dealing with the pandemic.
I think this is part of it, but am only speculating.
Another thing to consider is that there are established protocols for withdrawing or re-examining medication once approved. This is also the case with vaccines so this is not unique. However the nature of the timing is unique considering most vaccines are rolled out in absence of a global pandemic.
So in many ways you have a classic example of established but inscrutable bureaucratic process combined with poor communication leading to an easily avoidable debacle. Or pretty much government in a nutshell.
I can’t speak to the specific situation with the j&j vaccine, but in general the FDA tends to be very conservative with their advice to pause or withhold a medication for market when vaccines are involved. I’m not a policy expert just a researcher, But a lot of it makes sense because we’re vaccines are concerned you are literally giving them to tens of millions of people as fast as you can. Other medications typically do not see as widespread or rapid prescription to the public. For example even though tens of millions of people use statins, it took much longer for use of that class of drug to become widespread than it would for a vaccine.
Then there are the immuno modulatory effects. Most medications are not designed to deliberately and semi-permanently affect the immune system. Even medications with knock-on effects toward the immune system are typically targeted for something else, like blood pressure or cholesterol. With a vaccine or any immune system target The primary purpose of the drug and its primary system of action are different. Cholesterol doesn’t have a memory so to speak.
I think treating other how they would want to be treated is better than treating them how I would want to be treated. This is referred to as the platinum rule.
Another story that is relevant in many parts of the world. there have been cases with the Oxford-Astra Zeneca vaccine having caused blood clots, but is rare, treatable and not likely to be fatal. Me, I would take it if that is what I am to get.
I was supposed to get my first shot tomorrow, but I have a lingering sore throat, I don’t know what it is, and I figured to cancel yesterday.
Going to take effort for while as more and more get vaccinated and maybe even then some.
In America we’re doing absolutely bizzaro world levels of pretending that Covid ended with the first vaccine shot. Many area schools are already getting rid of masks or planning to do so. In a nation where most schools have Approx. 25-45 total days left. It’s like we’re swimming from a shark attack and we see the shore. Then decide well it’s possible we can beat him there by doggie paddling instead of all out freestyle.
We’re determined to be idiots about Covid forever.
