Coronavirus - What Happened?

You’re in luck! My spouse is Canadian, so I’ll get you a spot on my flagship, the SS Gulliver.

Nah, I want to own and command it myself.

So it’s mutiny then? So be it!

As to the economy, I wonder if it is a slower effect, enough people are still in the economy such that one can still buy food. At the same time, keep some economic involvement. What does anyone think?

Will I have to boot you out the airlock like the Alien to effect this?

I agree. A lot of crash is uncertainty here. I think if it’s not super long things can rebound fairly quick. If it’s long buckle up.

The grudge of an Celt can survive even the vacuum of space.

Bankruptcy happens two ways, gradually, then all at once.

When I read crash I thought of my having just watched ‘Contagion’ for the second time since Saturday.

In that film there was rioting, opportunistic armed burglary and scary deterioration of safety. Might we explore what factors/if they are likely to come into play?

Here’s the problem. The stock market is uncertainty based, but global supply chains are looking at a slump that could easily last all year. That’s a supply problem that we cannot actually fix soon.

I think the system is so fragile that we don’t actually know what the extent of it is yet, but I’m not optimistic.

A few hundred thousand people losing their jobs and homes would do it. If we have a crash and the only folks who get bailed out are equities holders, I’m joining Antifa, or moving to one of the abandoned Celtic monasteries.

I am not thinking a typical the sheriff is coming as part of a foreclosure. I mean, someone beating someone else or worse for something basic.

I am reminded of recent Planet of the Apes movies in which everyone needs a gun. We don’t have as much here in Canada as the States, but I wonder if it gets to the point a few police officers get jumped for their guns. that sort of territory.

Or maybe I am ruminating on it too much, and should relax.

Yes, I am aware. I’m just wondering how bad this will end up after everything is shut down for weeks or month compared to the alternative.

That’s debatable, because for most people this virus is supposed to be nothing more than a cold. Either way is bad, the question is which is worse. And what else will happen as a result.

That’s what I’m talking about, and it’s just the beginning. It could be the beginning of another great depression.

Me too.

Well, in Canada we are fucked one way or another in that regard because hospitals were already at 120% capacity before this started.

Better hope you can buy food or else it’s going to be a famine and way worse than the virus. The stock markets already crashed and in some places almost everything is shut down. The longer it goes on the worse the effects will be on the economy.

We’ve always been told to soldier on. Like after 9/11. Fuck the terrorists, we are going to continue our lives the way we always have. This is so completely different. We have to do the exact opposite to keep it under control. It’s just not how we are conditioned (at least as Americans).

My other thought is that I don’t give a shit about global warming. The planet can shrug our entire species off at any time. We are not in control.

The thing about climate change is that we are killing Mother Nature in the process.

Well, maybe it happened in past cataclysmic events like a meteor in the Yucatan that killed the dinosaurs. With this I wonder how long it sets things off. Also stuff like mercury and hydrogen sulfide.

I’m an optimist when it comes to society figuring things out. I don’t think we are even in a spot to entertain the potential of that unless it’s just a fun discussion/nightmare scenario. I mean sure it’s possible if the shit hits the fan for a long time but I think the long time part is key. If we’re looking at this shit months from now where people are quarantined sure game on. I don’t think we have any reason to think that will be the case at this point.

So you’re proposing everyone just does normal and the strongest will survive and figure it out? I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. An entire population of sick people being bad for the economy is not debatable. Letting everyone get it to see what it’s like for them isn’t good for the economy and it’s not debatable.

So your solution would be to see how high that capacity can go? To see what kind of effects would happen if we skipped and held hands and licked handrails and you drastically increase the number of people needing them?

You’re not fucked right now or even close to fucked. You’re posting tons on t-nation. You’re either financially comfortable or working from home. You’re not out looking for food or water or significantly worried for your survival right now or you wouldn’t be looking up 60 minutes YouTube videos.

You might be fucked eventually who knows. But attempting to stop the spread of the virus with short term distancing isn’t going to be the reason you’re fucked.

We’re at a time in history where a lot of the population can work from home and we have the technology to solve this much faster than any other time.

It may be the end of all days but it’s by far the best time in history to keep that from happening.

Some trial vaccines are being made in record time. the first human subjects are taking a leap of chance it doesn’t have side effects, and we have to flatten the curve until it becomes mass produced and available in 12 - 18 months. Fuck it will be hard to have patience.
