They also learned that people around the world couldn’t stand Trump’s behavior. It was the perfect opportunity for them to garner support while spreading anti-US sentiments. Now every country that has a beef with them is “in cahoots with the US”. They start shit with Australia over some minor trade dispute and the media claims they’re in cahoots with the US.
Even the stupid mask issue was used. Every country that didn’t encourage mask wearing was “following the US” although it was the WHO that said there was no need for masks in the first place. Our government took it’s initial stance from the WHO but the “following the US” narrative is still widespread.
Don’t get me started again… Lol. Just from the standpoint of China’s political gain and our allies’ questioning us I wish we could undo the last 4 years. They played it very well though. Consolidating opinion on the home front while simultaneously getting support in other regions was a deft tactic.
An often missed point. I suppose my rejoinder would be that Hong Kong was both prosperous and free without democracy, which is not a situation we’d normally expect.
Some people just can’t take a W, can they? It’s like the few remaining Brexit ultra redoubts left in the U.K. You got what you asked for, pushing for more is likely to worsen the situation.
It’s the same as the lockdown sceptics over here, their dreadful optics have worsened the public attitudes towards their cause, which they ignore, thus worsening their image. It’s a symnecrotic situation.
Moderna shot 1- Mild arm soreness 2-3 days after. No other effects.
Moderna shot 2- very slight arm soreness less than shot one. Day after mild headache and mild body aches/chills. I worked the whole day after shot 2 but would advise maybe scheduling the day off after on both just to be safe. No lingering effects.
Anecdotally, I’ve heard the Astra-Zeneca is the worst on young people, but my grandparents didn’t report any symptoms other than a bit of fatigue. My future sister in law (student nurse) got bad night sweats and chills/ body aches.
It’s incredibly weird. Friend of mine felt like death after second shot and a girl who had it the same day as mine didn’t have any side effects. But the same girl (work colleague) said she had side effects on first shot and I had none.
And yet my grandma who is 91 years old had no side effects after either…
My parents got their first Moderna shots, no side effects.
The thing that irks me is that they believe that the AZ vaccine is somehow “bad”, as in “poor aunt X, she got the Oxford jab that doesn’t work”. When I try to press them on the issue, I get “some people say” circular arguments.
From what I’ve read, and heard about the history from numerous friends and acquaintances there, I think it was kind of a unique “we don’t give a fuck” situation. HK was prospering so the people didn’t care. It was once called “The Pearl of the Orient”. The poor ones who escaped China in the mid 19th century were better off poor there than in China. Hell, you can even go google the real Ip Man’s story and see how he got separated from his wife and kid for the rest of his life when he moved there first and they couldn’t get out when China closed the doors. The dude ended up an opium addict, unlike in the movies.
The British government was more or less non-interventional. There was freedom of speech and lots of self-enterprise. And triad activity. The British guys at the top were only stationed there for a couple of years at a time so lots of them weren’t seeking power. They just wanted to line their pockets with bribe money and you needed a prosperous country so people could afford to pay you off, which is something lots of other countries didn’t get because their corrupt leaders were dumbasses.
The only thing that wasn’t tolerated was the Communists. But then South Korea and Taiwan were massacring them at that time so I’d say they got off pretty lightly in HK lol.
But honestly, I’ve been in and out of HK numerous times a year from the mid 2000s till after the Umbrella Movement in 2014 and I’ve not seen anything change much. Back then we relied on middlemen from HK to hold our money in escrow accounts for buying goods in bulk from China suppliers since there was so much cheating going on but Alibaba and other online payment providers put a stop to that eventually. Later on, I just went there for the century egg porridge and my wife loved to shop there.
There was even a well-known building with 5 levels where you could get all the pirated porn and video games you wanted which was only open during the day lol. I hear it’s still around today.
I have to be honest I’m not 100% sure. I’ll try and find out for you. Most of my family (big family) has been vaccinated and about half Moderna half Pfizer.
I believe I read that Moderna was having a bit more side effects as they used a bigger dose or something? But that’s off the top and I can’t remember what article was talking about it.
I’d go with whichever one you can get first, but might research around a bit. Grandma is in bed already I’m sure
It’s alright, just asking to give myself a little meaningless psychological comfort. I’m aware that different people react differently and all the vaccines from established companies are more or less the same in terms of risk. Not gonna hold you to anything lol.
