Yup. I really enjoy listening to Bret & Heather. They are far more left than I am, but very level headed and make me question my own assumptions.
Good to see a massive increase in the amount of people getting vaccinated per day.
A market that has been open for over 100 years in my town, is closing because of Covid. I knew one of the people who have owned it over the years, and the place was always profitable. The new owner bought it two years ago, after having been an employee for several years, and over the course of the pandemic has had to let go of 14 employees and run the place with 4, including himself. Some of the people he had to let go had been working there for 20 to 30 years. One of the remaining employees has been associated with the business his entire life as his father used to work there. Itās absolutely criminal that the government can put measures into effect that can harm businesses yet do nothing to help those businesses ride out this period and survive into a post pandemic world.
100%. We are having several of the same types of places close here. If youāre going to spend money as a country and going to debt, this is an infinitely more worthy cause than most others we spend on. This needs to be prioritized properly and relief needs to be sizable. And not go to companies with hundreds of employees.
When you say market, you mean food, right?
They seem like one of the businessā not hit very hard as they have been able to stay 100% open through everything. Why were they hit so hard?
This type of stuff is really sad. We can do some things to help (trying to get takeout from our favorite small places), but it just isnāt enough in many cases. I have a Chinese place near work that I really like that I get food from at least once a week. Their business seems really down to me. I would hate to see this place go out of business.
If the government says that you canāt be open, then IMO they need to cover you financially.
Itās more of a specialty foods market and caterer. The catering part of the business is gone because no one is having events. The market has lost a lot of foot traffic because people are working from home. People who work in the area who normally pick up lunch or breakfast there, are home.
Ahhhh gotchya, i think i know the type. Probably made a big chunk of its profit from the lunch crowd and pickup dinner after work crowd. And with catering gone, thats doubly rough. Shit, that sucks- i really like those kind of markets.
Sounds like this was one of the casualties of buyer patterns shifting away from what made it profitable, and not an issue of being closed by govt decree, or people not able to spend money there. the South Lake Union area of seattle has pretty much died as it was all built around serving the HUGE amazon campus, but without the breakfast/lunch/happy hour crowds from the workers they all saw zero foottraffic for months, and it doesnt look like thats changing anytime soon.
Except thatās(closing of small businesses) the goal of those who determine what constitutes ācriminal.ā
These are UK numbers (duh), but this trend seems to be pervasive - better off people fleeing to the countryside to avoid the plague.

The most important question is whether technology will make this migration permanent, in other words whether there will be further divergence between white and blue collar workers besides the K shaped unemployment curve.
Trend has been remarkable in NYC and others. I din see it stopping with zoom becoming a staple unfortunately
Well, to look at this in a more positive light, people moving to non-mega cities might move some of the GDP to the picturesque and impoverished small towns and villages that London sucked the oxygen from.
My home town is looking like an actual option for rental, so maybe Dublin can eat some of the shop and pub closures for a change.
White collar cash going to places that arenāt giant concrete slabs where people are piled on top of eachother like a Judge Dredd issue, the horror!
Yeah, but the downside is theyāll bring their politics with them, and the picturesque towns will change.
Editāhopefully it will be a net positive on balance though
My town backs Sinn Fein +25, it really could not get any worse politically. It could get less poor though.
On that note I shall proceed to eat crow haha
Loppar
Can you help some bros out with a place to crash? We promise to not come over EVERY night for supper.
@Legalsteel @Aragorn
Of course. I can make outlandish promises (as I usually do) before my significant other steps in explaining icily that it appears that there was a slight misunderstanding with my husband, as he is rather prone to such matters.
I like to think that my steaks - both tuna and beef - are renowned far and wide. That I can provide every night. For everything else that is not the grilled flesh of dead animals you would have to speak with my SO. As Iāve alluded above, that would be quite aā¦challenging conversation.
Always wanted to visit Croatia.
The only question I have @loppar is how much booze and what kind will I need for bribes? Investments will be made appropriately
