It is true that infections are rising, particularly in Southern states, but death rates have fallen by a whopping 80%. The drive-by media will never report this, though. They’ll have you believe that infection = sickness = death. The situation down South is simply due to more people interacting and increased testing.
It’s funny - Coronavirus was virtually put on hold during the two week riot fest, now the focus has returned to the virus. How ironic. The lockdowns have failed and the experts have lost all credibility. Americans will not submit again.
Not all. Think about it - the government, if it tries, will be met with a lot of resistance. Businesses cannot just open and close at the drop of a hat. Nothing will succeed.
From what I have been told, the tests are even less accurate than previously thought. It was reported that there is a high number of false negatives, but from what I hear now there is also a high number of false positives as well. Not only that, but if you were infected and are now recovered your body will still have detectable fragments of the virus which are not a live virus and not infectious but (assuming no testing error) will make you test positive.
It makes me wonder, with several studies finding between 50-80% of infected people being asymptomatic, what is the rate of asymptomatic infections for other viruses like the flu? And if you have the flu but have no symptoms should you be worried about it? Now the WHO and other doctors/scientists are saying that the risk of asymptomatic people spreading the virus is extremely low, so what use is it to even test people who don’t have symptoms?
It’s funny, when the outbreak was at it’s peak here in Ontario they were turning most people away from testing stations, you had to have a referral and symptoms. They tested very few people, but later started encouraging anyone and everyone to get tested and the numbers still continued to drop. They went from testing a few hundred a day to 10,000-15,000
I think any operative lockdowns in either the U.K. or US ended with the protests. The government can say what it likes, but the jig is up. More the worse for both nations.
A lot of things in Canada are still closed or limited. In Ontario you still have “social distancing” measures in place so you have to line up to get into stores, gyms are closed, bars and restaurants are only allowed to seat people on patios, not sure if summer camps will open at all.
Also it’s uncertain what will happen with school when it’s supposed to resume in September. Three possibilities have been given, depending on the situation at that time. Either school will go back to normal, it will continue as it was since mid March with everything online and the kids stay home, or limited in-person school with kids only going every 2nd day or 2nd week and lots of online stuff. The 2nd and 3rd options are a major problem because that means that both parents can’t work full time.
Oh, I want speaking to the legality of the situation, I was speaking to the facts on the ground. We have block parties and riots in the U.K. the government can say what it wants at that point, but it won’t do much.
I have to admit that “the Reverse Chicken Littles”/not-as-bad-as-the-FLU, Bro! " people can really have you questioning all that has been done so far related to this Pandemic.
While they are still going at it full-bore on all forms of Social Media, I have yet to hear their explanations on:
what is going on in Texas (Houston particular) and in Arizona, as ICUs are at or near capacity and younger people are being hospitalized for COVID RELATED RESPIRATORY DISEASE; (not the “fake news” of anyone admitted who test positive is labeled as COVID even if they broke their arm or had appendicitis).
It’s summer (especially in two of the Hottest States in the Union). This is not FLU.
I am sincere in asking what their explanations are for these two phenomenon.
I just wish our response wasn’t to throw everything out the window. It’s like we (average joes) went from ok we are going to lockdown and social distance and then the minute things opened up we said fuck all that. Mask at the grocery store? Can’t be bothered with it. Try to not wait directly behind the person in line? Come on now freedom!
I don’t want another lockdown at all and I don’t want states to have to go back in phases like Texas has or anything. And I don’t think we will shutdown totally again. But when you have the President and Vice President setting the example of don’t do simple things like wear a mask in the fucking Mayo Clinic what can you really expect?
It’s like we went from ok we can stay in a while for the sake of others to “ok we’re open so act like a pandemic is over.” We won’t even do the super easy things on our own and then we’re shocked that anyone would dare say “ok we’re going to have to enforce you doing the simple things.” Shits not that complicated. You can want things to be open and still take steps to prevent spreading it. Or we can act like it’s some Herculean task to wear something on our face for 20 minutes at Wal-Mart. At this point we’ve said we can’t really be bothered on the whole with that stuff so let’s just kill off the fuckers who might die to this and get it over with. If they have long term consequences well hopefully they have good insurance.
Well, you need extremely high compliance rates for them to work…and enough people in both our countries basically said “no fucking way” that we shot ourselves in the foot during lockdown, and of course immediately “after”, meaning now.
You thought Americans could do moderation? We basically built this damn country on a complete lack of moderation in everything. That’s unpatriotic!
If the president of the United States, who has the biggest and best brain, tells me the virus is dying out and is so unbothered by it that he’s comfortable throwing rallies and telling people not to wear masks, then it can’t be that bad. Right?
Besides, there are hooligans tearing down confederate statues - in other words, literally deleting history. That’s the real travesty plaguing America. Try to keep up.
Maybe my initial response was a bit too tongue in cheek. The “naysayer” community is largely Republican (source below). Their figurehead is telling them the country has made great progress and the virus is on the verge of disappearing. Their preferred news source isn’t covering the virus like it’s a major issue. So, why would they take it seriously? Sure, the numbers don’t support this, but cognitive dissonance is hard to overcome. It’s easier to explain the case volume away as an artifact of ncreased testing (never mind the positivity rate). The increased hospitalizations can be explained away as well. People are in the hospital for other unrelated issues, and happen to have COVID. Just don’t overthink that.
So, if you consider what I laid out, I see a few ways for this to become real for folks.
The president needs to show some leadership and start taking this seriously. He did soften his anti-mask rhetoric… so, maybe a step in the right direction?
Fox News needs to focus less on the red meat stories that get their audience off and start covering the virus in a serious way. People have a tendency to focus on the nearest threat. If you’re worried about a faceless mob coming to get you, you’re less focused on the virus.
Unfortunately, these folks may need to be directly impacted by the virus to take it seriously. Someone they know will have to wind up in the hospital or worse for them to be shaken from their complacency.
I think this thing is going to be with us for a while - cases and deaths are going to go up. The good news is that it seems to be less fatal as it mutates/evolves even though it remains very communicable.
It really has been perplexing to see the deniers (whom are a very vocal group) grow almost silent over that is happening in these ICU’s especially in States like Arizona and Texas; and what is just beginning to happen in less-developed countries.
I sincerely wanted to know when (if ever) the pandemic goes from “hoax” to “real”.
I also want to state again how unfortunate that this has all become a political/ "us vs. “them” issue.
