You truly believe we can “test-trace-isolate” EVERYBODY in the country? Are you aware of how insane, but moreover, impossible to achieve?
NYS, specifically NYC, now has an overabundance of ventilators due to the panic and whining of Cuomo. So much so that he decided to donate them to Michigan after promising to return them to Upstate NY. “Dispatching the National Guard to collect ventilators for NYC. Don’t worry though - the government will return them to you.” Another big fat lie from King Cuomo.
I think if testing becomes simple and cheap, sure. My firm would happily pay $5/employee test to test everyone twice a week. That’s a super cheap overhead expense.
It just comes down to our ability to mass produce cheap, accurate tests. And I have NO idea how possible that is right now.
I’m sure the “let’s just do nothing” would play out way better. I mean a lot of the people dying are old anyways and a lot of us on here aren’t that old so fuck em. Of course if it was killing people ages 0-40 at that rate we should respond way differently. After all I’m more at risk then!
I’ve always stood by the fact that we should encourage shelter-in-place for the elderly, people with comorbidities, etc. However, I’ve also advocated that, as grown adults, people should have the ability to make their own decision regarding individual health. The government should not have the power to regulate that whatsoever.
Death is an inevitable. It sucks, sure. But we literally cannot save everybody. Trying to is futile and will do more harm than good.
Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam and Singapore(if they can successfully contain their worker dormitory situation) are close to eradication of the virus if their stats are accurate. From my sources in China, life has returned to near normalcy.
What decision are you unable to make regarding your individual health right now? Seems to me you can smoke, eat fast food, drink, do whatever you want in that regard.
Hey, I have been gone for a while because I was tired of the same old stories, plus things at work totally fell apart and almost everyone, residents and employees are infected.
I’m not looking for a debate, I just want to tell you a couple of things. First of all, there doesn’t seem to be much use in the lockdown and isolation for the vast majority of people. I’m infected right now and I have no symptoms at all, I know several other people who are infected and have no serious symptoms. Symptoms for the non-elderly and those with no serious pre-existing conditions are basically nothing much to worry about. Those over 60 and/or with certain health issues which put them at high risk of complications or death are the ones who should be staying home.
However, people are dying, and over here 80%+ are nursing home residents. If different measures had been taken to protect them then we would not be in this current situation. Here’s an article about another home in Ottawa that has a similar situation:
Depending on what study you read this is over 100 million people in America. And that’s keeping in mind we have no idea who all has pre-existing conditions. I believe we’ve had that conversation many times. Might actually be even less people out and about if we said no one over 60 and no one with pre-existing conditions are allowed outside the home. Not sure how that helps jumpstart the economy. We have people right now who have pre-existing conditions that are working.
Who said you can’t do those things? I can do all of those things right now. Some places may have penalties that other places don’t have. My assumption is these will be short term. But you can still choose to do that just like you can choose to go to a park with no clothes on. Is it a violation of your individual health to be forced to have clothes on? I mean maybe it is. But it seems like a silly thing to get worked up over.
I do know in NYS it is a requirement and in some places, fines are imposed. How often police officers are actually enforcing that is questionable. They have much more important things to worry about, IMO.
The other issue I take massive issue with is church functions being “delayed or postponed.” Last time I checked, there was a separation of church and state in the 1st Amendment of the Bill of Rights. So, that right there, is government overreach on a huge scale. And yet, American citizens don’t care. At least not enough. Americans are always willing to sacrifice a little bit more liberty for the illusion of security. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile.
That is not remotely what I said. I said we were ridiculously behind. We have been from the start. Please use the brain God gave you.
Fantastic. That’s New York, not the entire country, and you know that.
Which is reasonable. However, you are aware that almost 40% of the US population has at least 1 chronic disease that would count as a comorbidity? I do not think the percentage of population directly affected by shelter-in-place has reached that high a percentage even now, although I could be wrong.
While people should definitely have the ability to make decisions regarding their own health, government has long had the power to regulate it. As in, for more than a century.
In addition, state governments have the right even if federal government does not (which it does, “the general welfare” being an explicitly named responsibility of the federal government in the Constitution) and most of the regulations are happening at the state and local levels. What exactly is an over-step may be up for debate, as most constitutional issues are. What is not up for debate is that they have the power.
It should be obvious that’s not what we are trying to do, and it is a strawman to claim otherwise. Practically speaking, do you think anyone will vote for a president that allowed 2 million people to die in order to reach “herd immunity” (which may or may not be long term)?
The obvious answer should be “no”. So, even if not for health reasons but for self-centered political reasons, reaching herd immunity is essentially an non-starter.
I am really sorry to hear that mate. I hope you stay with no symptoms and kick it early. Keep up on the vitamins!
