Controlling Adrenaline Surge
Sarev0k wrote:

well thats just a terrible blanket assumption. You clearly have no idea what youre talking about, and dont understand that some people may have bigger problems than you could ever imagine, none of which can be 100% solved by other methods alone. A combination of the right drugs and talk therapy, meditation or whatever else is often the perfect solution to many peoples situation. Dont act like you know whats best for everyone dude, thats just fucking ignorant.

I second what Derek said. I don’t know why so many of you are attributing this to anger issues.

Sounds entirely like anxiety to me - probably a lack of experience with confrontations/fights.

I don’t see that anger and anxiety are necessarily separate issues. Seems to me that anger is simply one possible response to anxiety, or a perceived “threat” (i.e. verbal confrontation).

When our brains perceive a threat, be it a direct physical threat or just a source of acute social anxiety, our sympathetic nervous system kicks in, triggering an adrenaline dump and all sorts of other physiological and cognitive changes. These responses are involuntary and very difficult to directly control. They are designed to keep us alive. They are also generally inappropriate in our day to day lives.

The 2 basic emotions attached to this state of arousal are anger and fear, or fight or flight, with a third possible “freeze” response in cases of extreme fear.

The only involuntary function most of us can exert any significant conscious control over is breathing. A proven method of controlling the “adrenaline dump” through breathing is 4 count breathing. Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 4 hold empty for 4 repeat until things settle. This is used effectively both by women in childbirth, athletes pre-competition and tactical teams pre-contact.

This is best done before a stressful encounter if you know ahead of time as the anxiety usually begins ahead of time in anticipation and is often peaking before you even get started.

The other consideration is actively evaluating why you perceive confrontational social situations as threatening. If you can find ways to actively reduce the level of the perceived threat you can short circuit this whole process ahead of time. This is a more long term process that can yield huge personal benefits where the breathing is a more immediate thing to get you through what’s right in front of you.

Hope that’s mildly helpful, OP.

Never said that no one should go to the doc. Some people absolutely should.

I had the same feelings that the OP had, and they went away with time, and life experience. Confrontations go way deeper than fight or flight.

My personal point of view was the constant getting picked on and beat up by older kids when I was a kid. We’re talking kids that were 5 years older than me. Nothing like being a 10 year old kid getting beat up by a person who can almost legally drive a car, or being called a faggot every day for no reason at all. After that, you pace around in your head whether or not you will get in trouble with the law if you defend yourself. And the worst part is feeling alone. My GOD, that has to be one of the worst feelings in the world growing up has to be feeling alone.

My point is, He asked for specific advice for a specific problem, one in which I had a personal struggle with. I told him what worked for me.

Not everyone needs to be prescribed pills for something, let alone all the side effects that go along with it(higher risk of blood clots in some).

Some people need to go to the doc, I absolutely agree.

Why do you ask, D?
Just curious?

Hard to diagnosis sometimes over the net.

OP next time it happens, try to get a heart rate and blood pressure.

Otherwise listen to SSC on this, but do not listen to him on football. He is clueless.

^^this. Unless you have formal training in psychiatry, you shouldn’t be giving this sort of advice - in fact, it would be unprofessional for even a psychiatrist to make judgement calls over the internet. It’s good that you have personal advice to give the OP, but it’s irresponsible to give medical advice.

OP, I recommend seeing a doctor.
