Competing at 40: Rob's Bodybuilding Prep Journal for Season 3

WEEK 12 START

Today’s Weight: 160.7 (2.1 lbs down from last week) - I still can’t believe we’re losing on this plan after adding more food.

Cliff asked me to send these poses with every check in now.

Mentally the thing I’m most focused on is my legs. In previous competitive seasons even though I got really lean there was still a level of conditioning left, the feathered-quads, lines-in-the-glutes that I never reached. We’re 11.5 weeks out and I feel like there’s still so far to go.

Now that I know for sure what shows I’m doing and I’m focused more on competitive level conditioning and not just losing scale weight anymore, it’s getting a little harder to look at progress pics because all I can see is improvements that need to be made. But again, this is where I just focus on doing what Cliff says and getting his feedback, because if he thinks we’re good, then I’m good because I trust him totally and I know he’s got it all under control. I’m interested to see how he wants to proceed because for the past few weeks we’ve been adding food and still losing. So I’m wondering if he’ll want to add more food since we still lost, or, maintain the current macros.

Even though we’ve been adding more food I’m still losing fat and making progress, so Cliff upped my food yet again! New macros:

260c, 215p, 64f (added 20g carbs and 5g protein per day)

Cardio - 2x LISS 15 minutes (removed 5 minutes from cardio sessions)

I can’t believe we’re still adding food, I know at some point I’ll stall and we’ll have to start going the other way again but for now I’m gonna ride it out long as I can.

Yeah, thats the winner. :+1:

Doing great Rob! Adding food at 12 weeks out has to be a first.

Side triceps pose looks really good. the width of the side leg, sharpness of the midsection, thickness of chest and delt. they all flow together great.

Mid section looking tight now Rob, lower back detail coming out too, seeing less of the puffiness from the last pics.

Thanks man! I agree the side tricep is my best shot.

And yes, adding food AT ALL during a prep is a first, and to be doing it only 12 weeks out even more of a both a boost and a learning experience. Mentally it helps to not be feeling more deprived, but it’s also like…“shouldn’t I be REMOVING stuff, not adding it?!” Aaaaand THAT is when having an expert coach comes into play, because I don’t have to worry about it, I know he’s got it and just do what he says! Also a great learning experience for me though because I would have thought to maintain this weight I’d have to be eating like a bird, and that’s not the case!

Thank you brother, great to see you on here!!

Thanks man, I agree getting tighter for sure. Starting to see a little bit if indentation in the glutes also, I’m excited to see my legs coming in. My wife commented that usually my current level of conditioning is what I’ve had at 6-7 weeks out, so to be this far ahead feels great.

WEEK 13 START

Weight: 162.2 (up 1.5 lbs from last week)

Feeling good for 10.5 weeks out with our progress. Obliques are getting dialed in, starting to see a little bit of glute definition. LET’S GOOOO.

For the past 3 weeks we’ve been adding a little food each week, usually 20g carbs and 5-10g protein, and I’ve still been losing weight. So I figured for sure since my weight went up, we’d start cutting again. NOPE! Cliff added more food! Another 10g carbs, 10g protein. Prior to check in on Monday, I did have a prescribed full 3 days off of training, one of them also being my re-feed day. So Cliff figured I’m holding a little extra water and glycogen, but the pics are looking good so he wants to add food for one more week, then start cutting again. He was right, my weight today went back down to 160.7, which was the same as the previous week’s check in.

NEW MACROS: 225p, 270c, 64f

I added the 10g protein to my post workout shake, and the 10g carbs to my intra-workout carb/EAA drink.

To be now about 10.5 weeks out and adding food when the only thing I see in the pics is “not there yet, lots of work to do”, is pretty wild and goes completely against everything I’ve ever done. I feel like there’s still lightyears to go, and especially since I’ve never hit that super-glutes shredded level before, there’s a feeling of “man I hope we have enough time, gotta cut!”. But Cliff said he’s super happy with our progress, and sees us cutting in pieces from here until the first show, doing diet breaks as needed if we start getting ahead of pace. I love that the aspect of pacing myself rather than, “get there ASAP to make sure you can get there”, and it’s just a great feeling to know Cliff’s got it all under control. He said a big part of his job is to help pace his athletes, dial back when they might be inclined to go too fast, or push them when they need to be pushed harder. I absolutely value his insight here and no doubt his methods are a huge reason why I’m able to be at this level of conditioning, eating more food than when I started cutting, and only doing 30min cardio per week. I know we’ll be kicking it into higher gear next week and I’m ready.

Energy wise last week was pretty rough. Even though I’m eating a fair amount of calories and carbs, my body just doesn’t like being this lean. My posing coach, who is a multi-time pro natural bodybuilder and really great coach himself, said that your body will get to a point when it’s lean enough that it doesn’t really matter what you’re eating, how many carbs you’re having, you’ll still feel rough.

My sleep is starting to suffer a bit, it takes longer for me to get tired and the quality of the sleep isn’t as solid as it usually is. My sleep was worthless when I last competed once I got to 6-8 weeks out, it’s definitely not to that level yet, but I did notice this past week the sleep did start getting affected a bit.

Cliff put me on a new training plan now that I finished up the first 12 week plan, and I am really liking the new one so far. Later this week I’ll get some pics of my workout logs from the week and post them up here. It’s a very well rounded plan, some days more high volume than others, but not nearly as much as the last plan with the 10x20 work. There are even some exercises in here I’ve never done before, which is fun to add them in and figure them out.

10.5 weeks out now of the first show, ordering posing trunks this week. We also confirmed I’m going to compete in both open bodybuilding, and open classic, so I need to start learning the classic poses also. Bodybuilding is my passion and preference, but I have also thought about competing in classic and Cliff agrees it’s a good call, and there’s solid potential in both categories.

Upper looks a little ahead for 10.5 weeks out. What does coach say?
How are you feeling about legs? Do they usually trail behind upper a bit? They look great don’t get me wrong but not seeing much separation/conditioning yet. I’m the opposite. Legs come i first and back last.

Brother you are spot on. To answer your question, yes my legs are always the very last thing to come in, even after upper body is very sharp the legs have a way to go.

Yeah man I saw that in your posts, legs were peeled man!

Cliff hasn’t mentioned anything specifically about upper vs. lower body conditioning, and I am confident his reason is because he doesn’t want me to get over obsessive about it. He’s really aware of his client’s mindset, stress level, keeping everything chill and smooth. I already have a very obsessive personality and I know he’s aware of that as well. There’s for sure a mental obstacle for me there because while my legs did get pretty lean last go around, I never got feathered quads or lines in my glutes, so those specific aspects are what I’m already so focused on, my eyes always go right to my legs. So I’m just trusting his confidence in where we’re at right now and that we’ll get to where we need to be by the time show rolls around.

WEEK 14 START

Weight: 160.2 (down .5lbs from last low two weeks ago)

Well, looks like my body has finally found the maintenance of my current weight and conditioning, as the past two weeks we haven’t lost any, but haven’t gained either. Things still seem to be tightening up a little bit, but seems like we found maintenance at about 2,550 cals, 270c, 225p, and 64f. It’s higher than I thought it would be which is pretty awesome! We’ve been adding food for the past 4 weeks which has been awesome.

That being said, I know we’re going to start cutting again this week because we’re 10-11 weeks out of my first show, so we’re gonna start cutting and take breaks as we need to if we start getting ahead of pace. I say 10-11 weeks out because recently I’m thinking I’m not sure if I’m going to compete in all 4. Here’s the tentative schedule:

June 14 - Phil Heath Super Show - Arlington, TX - national qualifier
June 21 - Branch Warren Classic - Houston, TX - national qualifier
July 12 - Republic of Texas Championship - Austin, TX - national qualifier
July 25-26 - USA Championships - Las Vegas, NV - pro qualifier

Looking at the first two, June 14 and June 21, as they’re approaching I’m thinking I may want to choose one, rather than both. I think it will be challenging to do both and keep the business stuff moving along at the level it needs to. With back to back weekends it would be a lot of travel and prep. I’ll need to make this decision soon, right now I’m leaning towards picking one.

The ultimate goal this year is to get my IFBB pro card. In order to do that, I first need to qualify for the nationals show on July 25-26. To qualify, I need to attend a “national qualifier,” which the first three are. You can’t win a pro card at a national qualifier but you can qualify to go to nationals and try to win a pro card there. To qualify, you need to place in the top 2 in your “open” division weight class. So at any of the first three shows, if I place top 2 in open bodybuilding in my weight class, I will qualify to go to nationals. I’m assuming I’ll be in the lightweight division, which usually goes up to 154.25 pounds, if there are enough classes to split up that many divisions. Otherwise, I may be lumped in with middle weights which would go to up 164.25 lbs.

Either way, based on looking at previous contest pics of lightweight/middleweight classes, I think I’ve got a good shot at qualifying if I can come with amazing conditioning, which I know with Cliff’s coaching, we’re gonna do it.

Then, to get a pro card at nationals, I need to win at least my weight class. I’m not sure how realistic it is to think I can win an overall national contest as a lightweight regardless of conditioning, going up against guys with potentially 40-80 pounds more muscle, but I do think it’s definitely feasible to win my weight class, and at nationals there will for sure be a lightweight division.

Last week was solid, I’m really enjoying the new training plan. Way more fun than the last one which had so much high volume work. This plan has all body parts split up over 3 days, then off day, then the next two days are upper and lower strength days. There are also some techniques throughout like super slow eccentric, forced reps, etc. Here are my training logs from last week’s sessions.

The last day, lower body strength day, was really tough, I couldn’t go as heavy as I wanted to because my legs were still sore from the leg workout earlier in the week. There was a lot of leg pressing, leg ext., etc., in my last training plan, also hack squat, but no barbell squat. Now there’s barbell squat and the first leg workout last week was my first squat session in a little over 3 months. I was able to get good form and weight at 315 for reps, but man I was pretty sore afterwards. I know next time it won’t be nearly as bad since my body will be adapting, but even by Saturday I had to adjust an exercise and limit my weight because my hamstrings specifically were really sore and I was worried about getting injured. And I will NOT risk an injury! I was supposed to do heavy lunges, I tried one rep and was like, “NOPE”, and opted out for hip thrusts instead since it was glute focus.

Energy wise pretty good M-F, then man the weekend hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m not sure if it was because of the re-feed day on Friday or what, but it was the toughest two days of prep so far. Generally weekends feel harder than weekdays, not sure if it’s because my re-feed day knocks me out a bit, or, maybe there’s not work stuff keeping me busy and to focus on, but weekends are harder than weekdays overall. Sleep has still been declining a bit, I started taking a natural sleep supplement by Garden of Life which helps a little. It doesn’t help me get tired faster but does seem to lessen the amount of times I wake up.

Just started chest, man if you wanna humble your ego and blow up your chest, do that first exercise of bench press, 2 seconds up and 6 seconds down for 10 reps, and don’t count fast, do it with a timer for full seconds. Brutal. Your bench will be cut by 50% for sure.

Thank you man!

LOL yes it is, spurs some incredible growth though. Few years ago Cliff gave me a blood volume training plan, high volume with slow negatives it was nuts.

In my check in yesterday I asked Cliff specifically about this. He said we have no control over where it comes from as that’s a genetic thing, and ultimately it’s all gotta go, things are looking good so we’re just gonna keep pushing!

Fortunately we have a LOT of room to both remove food and add cardio.
