šŸ„‡ Community Challenge: The 40 Push-Ups Test

The study Chris referenced had the subjects (firefighters I think) start doing the pushups to the beat of a metronome that was at 80 beats per minute. Those are fast reps. And while the researchers were watching the subjects, there was no mention of any form requirements. So I suspect form was loose and sloppy.

Yes, thanks for the additional info. I think I had that metronome bit in the full article.

I just think it’s cool that this test was as accurate as the standard treadmill test. I took that test a couple years back. Had to go to a separate medical building, separate appointment etc. Pain in the butt. Could have done push-ups in the doctor’s office and saved time. And that’s part of the idea here: practical tests you can do anywhere.

I did an exercise stress test earlier this year using an exercise bike. It was indeed a pain in the ass but I actually found it easier to complete than the pushups. But the various challenges you’ve been posting are obviously way more practical. And fun to do. Except the pushups – that sucked.

Also, I found this bit from the study particularly interesting:

ā€œEven after adjusting for age and BMI, we observed an independent association of push-up capacity with CVD outcomes. Increased capacity was associated with a lower risk for CVD outcomes, with the comparison of the 21- to 30-push-ups group vs the 0- to 10-push-up group being statistically significant (hazard ratio, 0.25; 95% CI 0.08-0.76), although the other group comparisons did not reach statistical significance.ā€

I’ve done a few stress echos in the past few years.

I might give this a go just to see where I land.

especially if perfect form is not a concern.

Sorry about the short viewing angle. Tried to make sure I touched each rep for grins. Got hard at the end!

Thanks brother. What was once easy when I was younger and much lighter is now hard!

Man this really heated up for a push up challenge.

Good job to everyone whether you hit the ground or not. I’ve probably never done a single pushup going by the strict standards :joy:
