Comedy Central Sucks

No. Not at all. In fact, if it weren’t for the fact that some of these guys think the show is “edgy”, I doubt it would have as much of a following. It is now more a pop culture icon because rarely have I turned that show on and just started literally laughing out loud.

Their social commentary hasn’t grown much either since they first gained popularity.

That’s one reason I hate it when they make fun of shows like The Simpsons or Family Guy…because both of those shows literally have me laughing hard at times with The Simpsons deserving credit for truly being funny for so long before their popularity faded.
It’s all just a matter of opinion. There are very few college age people who don’t watch South Park at least every once in a while. South Park is popular because of how ruthlessly they attack everything and everyone. I’ve never likes The Simpsons that much because of how innocent it is. Family Guy, to me, has always seemed like a bunch of random unconnected jokes that have nothing to do with the plot that they forced together. That show also tends to drag jokes or one liners on and on for literally minutes, which bugs me.
Kid, I was in college when that show first started and I still don’t get the huge following it has. It isn’t that edgy. It is hardly ever really funny.

But then, you are probably the type who likes shows like Jackass. You don’t really understand comedy and get it mixed up with “ruthless attacks” all for the spectacle of it all.

Question, how often are you truly laughing out loud at the screen during a SouthPark episode?
Humor is a matter of opinion, though. I don’t think it’s fair to assume anyone who thinks Jackass or South Park are funny don’t get real humor. It may even be true for a majority, but anytime a show has a big following there will be a lot of idiots among the fanbase. I love South Park, I got a kick out of Jackass, and I love Arrested Development, which is funny in an entirely different way (i.e. what most critics would call “real comedy”). I can see where someone wouldn’t like South Park, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its merits. I think it’s funniest when it is lampooning celebrities and the like, but that isn’t the only positive of the show.
It really isn’t just a matter of opinion. If one group is laughing hysterically because a guy on a bike ramp just fractured his left arm and lost a testicle, I am going to assume that comedy above “physical spectacle” is probably not something they are into.

Like I said, I know some find it “edgy” and that may be its appeal, but please show me these truly laugh out loud fall out of your seat funny episodes that are airing and I keep missing.

Jack Ass is just people hurting themselves for no reason. I’ve only seen half of the first one, and didn’t bother watching the second. I think that it would be the other way around, with Family Guy being more like Jack Ass. I have seen some very funny parts in a Family Guy episode where you’re thinking “wow that was ridiculous,” but for me that’s probably only once per episode. The rest is Peter talking about random “what if” or “remember when” scenarios, or Brian and Stewie harping on a joke for minutes on end. Also, South Park wasn’t as funny at the very beginning. The first two seasons are extremely hit and miss in terms of finding a really funny episode. The episodes that you probably saw during college were most likely very tame, and not very off-the-wall funny, because that’s how much of the first couple seasons are.

Laughing out loud during a SP espisode is a very common occurance for me actually. That’s just because it’s my type of humor. Poking fun at everyone and everything is what I find humorous, and I like it when people do the same with me. Jokes against every race, every belief, and every person are hilarious to me, as long as you do it with everything.

As far as not understanding comedy, I will say that if a funny joke or scenario is portrayed to you, and you laugh (along with a lot of other people, being that the show does have a large following) then it must be comedic in some way. That would be comedy. The moral of most SP episodes are largely made up of satire, which is a form of comedy. Hell, I had to take a theater class a couple of years ago to get my performing arts credit, and the prof even used South Park as a good current example of Satire whenever she was teaching about the different types of comedy.

Edgy, when it’s used to describe art or media, means daring or provocative. Even if you don’t like South Park, you have to admit that the things that they make fun of are things that few others do publicly, and that the purpose of this is to insult or provoke. This simply CANNOT be denied. I see South Park on the Yahoo news front page almost once a year for something that they’ve done or said, whether it was a racist comment that was on the show, a religious or parental group that’s trying to get the show shut down, or whatever else. As another example, while the country was still bickering about whether it was okay to say “shit” on television, South Park came along and said it over 160 times, which just pissed people off even more.

I understand that you may not like it, or that it may not make you laugh, but other people have completely different senses of humor. It’s just like music tastes. You may like country, but I fucking hate it. To me all it is, is a bunch of old men complaining about shit while they play a guitar. To someone else it might be a beautiful portrayal of all of the problems that people have in their lives.

I think about half of the episodes from the last 2-3 seasons have been legitmately funny. A lot of unmemorable moments in the last few years though.

prof x… I have a hard time believing you’ve watched all 14 seasons of southpark if you say they aren’t funny… the last few years have been hit and miss with some episodes here and there but the first few seasons had quite a few hilarious episodes.

Also southpark has never made fun of the Simpsons… It has only made fun of family guy… they sided with Simpsons and king of the hill. They also made fun of themselves… in the episode mocking family guy.

OK, so your opinion is that it’s not that funny. Millions of others happen to disagree. Fortunately for me, Comedy Central airs the show based on the millions of people who DO enjoy Matt and Trey’s work and not what gets Professor X’s lolz on.

Of course, they could just be a coupla evil masterminds, tricking people into enjoying their crap show for - what? - 14 seasons now? Jackass came and went… South Park is still going.

I never got the appeal of Jackass. I DO like Family Guy (but not the spinoffs). I think The Simpsons was a genius show for so long it’s fucking ridiculous and Seinfeld rocked my world for many, many years. But it’s definitely lame to accuse someone of “not really understanding comedy” or belittling their opinion simply because they happen to disagree with you. If that wasn’t such a douchey thing to do, I’d never stop arguing with Monty Python or Aqua Teen Hunger Force fans.
Why the hell is THIS the only topic you decide to debate me on? Were you raped by a clown as a child? Where the hell are you during “racist Alffi’s”, “spinach boy invasions”, and other important hot button topics? Why only arrive when someone insults South Park?

I give South Park a “C-” for comedic content for the past 3-5 years.

I give American Dad an “F”.

The majority of the Jackass fanbase is college frat boys, and I would agree that most of them are idiots and have no notion of anything, let alone real comedy (Dane Cook’s popularity proves this). But I know plenty of intelligent people who laugh at Jackass because it’s a bunch of idiots making jackasses of themselves, which can be funny at times. That doesn’t mean they think it is comic genius. It’s more a case of someone saying, “Hey, look at these morons. Haha. OK, time to move on.” And it only lasted a few seasons, so there’s no way of weeding out the stupid fans from the smart ones. If Jackass was in its 10th season and people still found it funny, then yea I would say they have no real notion of comedy. There is a South Park that criticizes that sort of “one-upsmanship” humor that you might like, in fact. All I’m saying is that fart jokes have their place and can still be funny to someone who likes more intelligent humor.

As far as the censored Southpark episode goes, Comedy Central feels it needs to cover its ass, so be it. Personally, the episode was probably funnier with the bleeps in.
