Dude, are you lifting for your frat bros or for anybody at the gym?
Or are you lifting for YOURSELF?
Then who the fuck gives a shit what everybody else thinks, or what time you go to the gym at?
Do it for yourself, not somebody else.

You guys might not believe this, but I spent one semester at the nerdiest, geekiest, smallest, unknown, and rural school in the Southwest: New Mexico Tech
Ever heard of Socorro, New Mexico? This is where the VLA (Very Large Array) is controlled - you know all those big satellites from the movie “Contact” with Jodie Foster?
Anyway, basically this is the MIT of Southwest. Intel, IBM, and Microsoft are huge on recruiting there. Every Junior/Senior I knew spent at least 1 and many 2 summers at IBM, Intel, or Microsoft for internships. Just about all of them graduated with jobs there too.
Basically Nerd/Geek City (including me). But the one thing that surprised me was the gym. I look back on it and just wish I could go there for the gym. It was old and had 2 dungeons in the back. Had barely any machines - just your basic Leg curl/extensions/press and a few others. The rest was back in a small dungeon with some benches, lots of old dumbells and a couple squat racks. It had barely any lighting and was often pretty empty. I had my best workouts I have ever had there. It was great! And boy do I miss it.

At U of KY, we got a multi-million dollar gym just completed. I went in on my first day back, just to see what they had available. To my not-so-much surprise, there were zero OL platforms, and three squat cages. Furthermore, there was a big sign that had rules on it, one of them being “All olympic-style lifts must be performed in squat cages”. As an olympic lifter, I was thinking WTF!? Yeah, that’s real safe! Maybe for the rest of the people in the gym it is, but for the one performing snatches in the cage, a miss could cost your life. To make a long complaint short, I joined a local private gym that at least had a platform. I guess I’ve just come to the realization that we truly are in the tiny minority when it comes to functional training/ training methods.
Well Scott P we do have twenty-eight thousand treadmills though ![]()
