Just got my ticket in hand for Cal-UCLA this Saturday. Never been to the Rose Bowl before. Anyone have any advice on parking, bars to hit afterward, etc?

I have a goal of visiting as many college football stadiums as I can before I die.

I’ve been to:

South Bend
Michigan State
Cal at Berkley
Qualcom (San Diego State)
Coliseum (USC)

Not a huge list, but lookin’ forward to tacking down more.

The Rose Bowl parking sucks donkey balls. The Rose Bowl sits on the top of a hill, which means you have 1-2 lanes going up, and 1-2 lanes going down. You will be driving up the 134/210 freeways, parking on a grass field (most likely), and walking a shit ton to get to the stadium. I do believe that tailgating has been changed due to some violence…

Rose Bowl officials last week approved tailgating rules designed to provide a safe, family friendly environment.

Not surprisingly, there is an emphasis on limiting drinking. Recall that last season two men were stabbed in the stadium’s parking lot before the USC-UCLA game.

A few notable changes:

*Alcohol consumption will now be prohibited in all tailgating areas after kickoff.

*General parking lots will open to the public six hours instead of eight hours before kickoff.

*Games that involve the consumption of alcohol or use of alcohol-related paraphernalia are prohibited.

As far as bars/pubs, you will want to look on Colorado Blvd, it’s the main street in Pasadena where you will find all the nightlife. Careful if you drink, Pasadena cops hand out DUI’s for fun.

Note to self, skip Rose Bowl
Shit yeah man, Rose Bowl sounds like a real bummer.

But so much fucking history there. Gotta see it at least once.

Well drink heavy and take a cab.

OR go to bar, watch there and take a cab.

Or go on a tour, not during a game.

Dont tell me how to live my life Deej!

lololololololollollololo

Your supposed to say as your run away yelling.

“YOUR NOT MY REAL FATHER…”

You have to leave planet Earth to have a good time these days.

The Rose Bowl isn’t that bad, shit, the Coliseum isn’t so great with all the traffic in downtown LA, with Staples Center down the street, the Forum, the Sports Arena are nearby too.

Who are you rooting for Brad ? UCLA or Cal ?

Map of Rose Bowl

I went to the Rose Bowl to see Nebraska get bent over by Miami in 2002 (I was in the Marching Band at NU at the time). The things I took note of about the stadium and field, other than the nostalgia and history of the old building were:

 • how shallow the whole bowl was, each consecutive row is not much higher than the row in front of it
 • the whole stadium (or at least the sections that I saw) were old wooden bleachers, very old school
 • the grass was cut much shorter than other grass fields I have been on. Don’t know if they cut it like that for every game, but I started to think as the game went on that Nebraska brought the wrong cleats for that field, lol!

WTH happened to OU? Was totally pulling for them.

UNM is the worst college football team I have ever seen. We set a number of records against them.

Bama was asleep for a half, they must serve Starbux at halftime. The LSU game should be one for the ages.
They came out flat after the 1.5 hr weather delay. Then they played like shit for most of the game. Then the kicker missed a couple. Then we played like shit some more. Then we didn’t totally play like shit, but there was no time left. Then we lost.

Any other questions?

Yeah, I’m probably still hungover.

Of course, I’m always happy to lose during the season, when we play like that. I’d much rather the team’s weaknesses be exposed during the season than during a BCS game.

Now I just have to hope that EVERYONE loses. Except Boise. They can win out, and then I’ll giggle when it’s two one-loss teams in the BCS championship game. :)
That’s too bad. OU is about the only team from the Big 9 that I cheer for, and I especially hate Tech. I stayed up and roted for you guys.

Boise still has to play TCU, and our D has looked good 2 weeks in a row. We’ll see what Friday night at Jerry World v. BYU holds.

Hopefully Rangers will do the unthinkable tonight.

I honestly don’t have a dog in this fight Max.

Lots of friends that are Cal alumni though. They like when I come along because I know the right players to yell at and the right situations to get fired up, lol.

Makes them look savvy by proxy I guess.

As for the Coliseum, it’s getting pretty dang old too, don’t you think Max? I mean, you were in the locker rooms/etc.

Last SC game I attended was USC/UCLA in '09 when the big fights happened at the end of the game. Seems like that whole field could be lit up a little better.

And FWIW I was went to the Berkley-Arizona State game last year and it’s all wooden bleachers and old as well. They’re renovating it this year though.

Trent Richardson for the Heisman.

I think that people take this shit WAY too serious.

We (SC players) used to go down to Maloney’s (the nearby student bar/pub at UCLA) and drink the UCLA players. Just shoot the shit, talk some good shit, but no fights or trouble. Then, at one point, the students would get pissed at us being there, yes many of the Asian kids would talk shit, yell, and threaten us to leave or else. We would laugh, when Tony Boselli (6’8, 325 lbs, 12% bodyfat) would stand up and say “you wanna be first junior?” to the 5’4 Asian kid.

I think you should always watch yourself in LA, people here are uber fucking stupid, there is also an Occupy UCLA movement, which may show up too. There is a clear cut hatred with UCLA and Cal, so I would just be on my guard a bit, but I am sure it will be ok. The stadium has been renovated so the lowest level of seats are field level, the crowd feels more “on you.”

Yeah man.

I live in Coastal Ventura County, go to plenty of Dodgers and Kings games and always seem to stay clear of trouble. Doesnt’ hurt being a big bastard.

This weeks picks:
Purdue v. Michigan
Mich state v. Neb

UGA v. Florida
Ok State v. Baylor
OU v. Kansas St.
Stanford v. USC

LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo - home of BYU. IDC about the Mormons, their football team or anything else in regards to that area, but go and watch a game there. It’s amazing.

Michigan
Nebraska (hoping hoping hoping - I think MSU is a better team but NU can get them on an emotional letdown on the road)
TAMU
Georgia
OK State
Oklahoma
Stanford
Wisconsin
(although I wouldn’t be shocked to see Stanford or Wiscy get upset)

And here I was trying to be polite… good call.

Mizz v. A&M: A&M wins battle for SEC cellar.
UGA v. Florida: Florida, Brantley gets it done at the cocktail party. No Brantley then UGA.
Ok State v. Baylor: Ok State, Baylor VERY overrated.
OU v. Kansas St.: OU sodomizes K State
Stanford v. USC: USC, Standord is the better team but its time for their choke.
Wisconsin v. Ohio St.: Wisc destroys OSU.

What? Barkley has played solid all year. He went pass for pass with Luck last year in the SC Stanford game… its not like Barkley has been playing bad.

Probably worded that wrong, meant that it’s time for the rest of the country to see Barkley.
