A&M to hire Summlin. Expect announcement soon.

Wanted to hear your thoughts on that?
It’s done. I am fine with the pick. Although I do not think this is part of the reason he was picked, but I like the idea of an African-American coach on a pretty white campus. I remember a study done at A&M about race relations on campus that found that for the most part race was generally a non-issue. Aggies first above all else. But I think seeing something other then white guy at the helm will be good.
I have always liked the way he comes across in interviews. He seems both intelligent and likeable. The fact that he wins at UH is impressive, the coomitment to the program just does not seem to be there. If I have a concern it is his post season performance. They got destroyed by USM on their home field with a BCS bowl on the line. I saw them in the AF bowl a few years back and they did not even show up. Keenum threw like 6 pics and the whole team looked out of sync. I do wish him well at A & M and anywhere else he goes in the future.

Any good rumors about Turner Gill?

I think Sherman was sacked because of how uneven the team played. If Sumlin cannot get that straightened out I do not expect a long tenure. I think a competitive team all four quarters might be more important than wins his FIRST year.

So you don’t feel bad about leaving the continuity Sherman provided?

Not only is Texas A&M changing conferences (which Nebraska proved was not too easy) but they’re changing the entire scheme and staff.

They best be careful or else they’ll be another Kentucky on the SEC schedule. I’m excited to see a new rivalry with them and Arkansas though. Good luck to Sumlin, it’s cool to see he’s getting his shot.

After this season, what Sherman was doing was not working.

I think it will be few years for A&M but I think the recruiting classes will improve. They should be competitive if they can get over their insecurities. Being away from UT I think will help. Hell of a division they are in. The type of division where you could ranked 3rd in conference and BCS.

The Arkansas rivalry is not new, old SW conf stuff. They used to have a strong rivalry with LSU way back.

Sorry should have clarified.

There definitely seemed to be an rekindled fire going on when they clunked heads at Cowboy Stadium this year… That’s what I was trying to say.

“Idiots” who value defense?
5 forced fumbles, 2 picks and 2 punt return td’s is really a Heisman worthy stat line? come on man. I know you love the SEC but his stats just werent there for a Heisman Bid.

He was only there cause LSU is undefeated.

And because he’s the Honey Badger and he just doesn’t give a shit!

I agree with you Greg. I think he’s a great football player, but didn’t really put up anything tangible to warrant the trip to NYC

I agree. I bet there was talk even then about A&M jumping conferences so even more pressure to have a good showing.

Craig James is looking to run for Senate, representing Texas. Wonder how that will play given his manipulation of events at Texas Tech. Not like it would be any different than any political machine would try. Still, I would have to wonder what his was trying to sell from the first word out of his mouth.

haha oh greg, while I do love my conference, I didnt support Mathieu for the Heisman. You misunderstand me, I was simply pointing out why some “idiots” would have supported him. There are a lot of intangibles that defensive players bring to a team that some voters would have considered.

<3

heeyyy Bowl season begins!

I didn’t want to start a whole other thread, so I figured I’d post here.

Have you guys seen the Todd Marinovich documentary? Fascinating. Really compelling doc about that dude. The whole time I was in HS and saw him throw it all away I thought he was just a spoiled asshole, but that documentary shed a whole new light on the topic.

Have to watch that, totally forgot about him. I just remember the big lineman that was on the cover of SI.

You’re thinking of Tony Mandarich from Michigan State. The bust of an OL that got drafted ahead of Barry Sanders.

What I remember, playing high school ball during that same era, was coaches telling us that there’s no way we’d ever play Division 1 football, and using Marinovich (Robo-QB) and Mandarich (Beast of an OL) as the prime examples as to why. Those two were engineered, built, trained, and molded into elite football players, and we were just farmboys in cowboy boots with cattle to feed after practice.

Lol yea I have heard that myself, since we were in school at the same time.

No denying that. Gave him frozen beef liver and kidneys when he was teething?

That’s something.

Seems like the ultimate case of putting all your misgivings on the shoulders of your son. The dad was drafted by the Raiders after a dominant career at USC, but “overtrained” in the off season?

Seems like addiction ran deep in that family to begin with.

That was a powerful 30 for 30, definitely one of the best so far.
