Cold Cuts Good or Bad?

I read the ingredients of the cold cuts i was buying, ham and turkey, and realized that they both contain sodium nitrate.

are roast beef and smoke meat cold cuts ok? are they processed as well? do they contain sodium nitrate?

Thanks

I’ll eat some cold cuts once in a while, but they are VERY high in sodium. I wouldn’t eat them every day but once it a while when you’re on the go probably won’t hurt you.

The thing to do is buy most all of your food from the outer areas of your supermarket. That way you’re buying unprocessed foods. If time is a factor cook all your lunches on Sunday and that way you’ll have something quick to take with during the week.

here is a link that you can use to gauge nutrition and ingredients:

you will be surprised at the amount of sodium that is in some of the meats and the caloric density of cheeses. laters pk

There is a lot of sodium in the cold cuts–but not enough to freak about.

Unless you are cutting down for a show, a turkey, ham, beef…sand. won’t kill ya.

Neither will a piece of cheese…

Watch the mayo or butter and use whole wheat. Wash it down with a glass of milk and you have a good snack

Agreed, but you put butter on sandwiches?

NEVER-and not because I worry about cals either. Just cautioning about ultra fat additives.

That said, sometimes a glob of butter on a warm piece of bread or toast is mighty good.

I am not worried about getting fat but more about my general health. Read this and you will understand:

I recommend avoidance of processed meat slices too. Turkey ham, balogna, etc. Also loaded with sodium, the lower fat versions usually use fillers which also reduce the protein and nutrient value. I also read recently that some researchers now believe the sodium nitrate in these products may react with your stomach acids to produce a form of what is commonly called “salt peter”; a substance which used to be fed to violent prisioners and sex offenders for it’s testosterone lowering effect. Scary.

I read from other sources also that sodium nitrate is linked to low testosterone and cancer.

remember that certain saturated fats are horrible for fatloss. I read that saturated fats have the greatest propensity to be stored. I’m not saying not to eat them because they are important for body metabolism, just that you need to watch how much you get of them.

and who eats one slice of cheese? why would you comment that this is not a lot of sodium in one slice of cheese. Look at the big picture unless you don’t eat enough food. i eat 4oz with my protein and fat meals. laters pk

When I make a sandwhich–I eat one slice of cheese on it. I never commented on the sodium of cheese.

My big picture may be different than yours. Why–if you feel cheese is to fat or to sodium or whatever-do you choose to eat 4 ozs of it at one sitting.

I’m fairly certain I eat enough food to know what I’m talking about. Why do you still insist on protein and fat meals? Look at the big picture.

Moderation is the key, not deprivation. You, like so many others on this site only talk about perfection.
My big picture is to work hard. Play hard. Love my family. To hell with a cold cut occasionally or a slice OR TWO of cheese.

I’ll bet you $10 that a refined starch has a greater propensity for being stored as fat.

Sat. fat is anabolic and healthy. That’s why EVERY anabolic food contains it - milk, eggs, red meat, and fish. Nature has made it this way and humans evolved eating saturated fat. Ignoring nature and using cattle feed (grains) to nourish entire populations is a 20th century phenomenon. Listen to nature and you will grow and be healthy. Eat plenty of saturated animal fats.

That needs to be said louder and more often.

I just wanted to give that a big “HELL YEAH” and “mmm…cheese.”

pk- I’m curious about the study you mention.

Do you happen to have a link? I’ve always believed that saturated fats are great for cutting periods and am curious about research that claims otherwise.

Well thanks for the replies.

I was more wondering if Roast beef and smoke meat cold cuts are processed.

And also, what do you guys think of the sodium nitrate that are in processed cold cuts and the claims that it reduces testosterone and is linked to cancer. I have searched this site and the internet but havent found anything conclusive on this.

Minutiae

Probably in doses unconsumable to a human over a period of time extending over that of yours, the effects could happen.

If you are buying roast beef in a package, be assured it is processed. If you are so worried, cook a chicken a roast and a turkey on Sunday and eat all week.

Thank you for saying this. This is something that I have been saying for so long with little effect. Humans never used to be fat, or unhealthy, or any of the things that we are now. Why do humans think they can screw with what has always worked, and do better than mother nature did herself?

Since the beginning of our time, humans have eaten red meat, whole grains, milk, water, bread and fruits. This is the fuel designed for humans. Use it and live a healthy lifestyle. Buy into the hype and BS and be unhealthy.

I agree 100% with you guys.
Science will always think it knows more than nature, but in the end it doesn’t.
Satruated fat and cholesterol is ESSENTIAL for hormonal and testosterone production.

Thats why many people who eat too little fat have a hard time losing weight also.
This is another reason why I buy free-range/organic meat.

The omega 3 ratio is so much better, especially when they’re grass fed and not fed by grains.
When losing weight, stay away from refined sugar and ingredients you can’t pronounce and you should do good.

holy shit! anyone got any info on this? its really scary cause i eat probaly about 10 turkey slices, 4 ham slics and some chicken slices every day in my sandwhiches!

Another guy said that this effect is very little and we need not worry about it, just wondering if there are any other opinions?
