Christmas Through the Ages

Where we get the Christmas Tree:

Earlier, Ratzinger shows that the African ecclesiastical author Tertullian (c. 150 â?? c. 207) discussed a well-known tradition that Christ suffered death on March 25, a day that was cosmically associated with the creation of the world. March 25 was taken as the spring equinox (which we now know to be off by a few days), and hence the date after which light definitively conquers darkness. March 25 would be fully appropriate for not only the day of Creation, but also the day of the New Creation (the Incarnation or Annunciation) as well as Christâ??s Passion. It is by this historical development, and not that of the Mithras myth, that â??the feast of Christâ??s birth on December 25 â?? nine months after March 25 â?? developed in the West in the course of the third centuryâ?? (Ratzinger, 107).

Truth of why Christmastide starts on December 25th.

Forgot Pat.

Many of the “traditional” Christmas things: tree, red, green, etc., were originally Pagan, mostly Wiccan. Jesus was NOT born in December, there’s even debate about the actual date of his birth.

Blessed Yuletide (that’s December 21, the Winter Solstice, the Wiccan holiday of celebrating The God’s rebirth and renewal as the sun).
Incorrect. I’ll post a link about why it’s December 25th, but it is a commonly held myth, that has been debunked, that Christmas comes from a pagan holiday. I guess if enough people say it, it’ll eventually believed to be true.
I didn’t say anything about Christmas being on December 25. I said most of the symbols of Christmas are from Pagan holidays, such as the colors and the tree and other things.

Also, this is NOT what you originally said. You completely changed your post.

Interesting story. But, then why does the Bible condemn evergreen decorations because they are pagan?

At any rate, Merry Christmas to you all! Good times but the feasting gets out of hand. May start to spend some time over at V-Life!

Yes, I am sorry for having to change what I said, but I misspoke. Not necessarily because I was incorrect (which I was), but because of what the assertions of others were and how their comments looked compared to my original response to you and what they were asserting because something might be originally used by a pagan religion.

Yes, the items you spoke of are originally from pagan religions, however they were used into Christendom on other merits and not because a pagan religion was using them.

That is like saying Catholic monks are using robes and pagan monks originally used robes, therefore, Catholic monks got the use of robes from pagans. That maybe the case, but there might be an alternative explanation.

As to the part that I was wrong on, it was pointed out to me in a book written by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger about the reason for the placement of Christmas around December 25th.

Again, I didn’t change what I wrote because I necessarily didn’t agree with you, but because I hadn’t read your message carefully and didn’t know what others were going to assert, so that is why I change my reply to you. Sorry about the confusion.

“Many Americans celebrate…Christmas and Xmas.”

I’ll try and not let this quote affect me when I read the rest of the article. I just wanted to point out that both Christmas and Xmas are the same thing. I know in recent times it has become something not Christian. However, if you look at the image above, you can see what looks like a XP.

The XP is actually XR, X is the common letter for CH in English and the P is really an R, the first two letters of Christ’s name in Greek are CH/R or XP in Greek. When writing documents instead of spelling Christ out, it would be XP like the image above, just like we write LOL and ROFLCOPTER.

Xmas of course is just an abbreviation of Christmas.

Sheesh, I wasn’t even thinking about that. Just about the origin story of the “Christmas” tree. Personally, I think that statement is stupid. It’s like saying people celebrate birthdays and bdays.

For one, the verse Grneyes mentioned: Jeremiah 10: 2-4

So Adam & Eve’s Paradise Tree becomes the Christmas Tree. I like it. And a good example of Catholic myth-making.

What exactly are we supposed to be arguing about? That we didn’t reinvent the wheel?

That historical records of the christianity myths being lifted from pre-christian religions means they didnt actually happen.
