So, I was on the road at a client in Indiana near Chicago last week. Decided to catch a train into Chi-Town and see the Cubs (vs. A’s).
I’m not a big Cubs fan per se, but it’s one of those “must do” things for many baseball fans-- see a game at Wrigley Field. The stadium is beautiful and it was a great home game for the crowd.
We had a guy from India with us who was trying to understand the game. He was disappointed after learning it wasn’t true, but I told him about a “Fifth Inning Rule” where you could tackle the runners after the 5th inning. Ha-ha just kidding. Then, he didn’t believe us when we told him about the “7th Inning Stretch” where EVERYONE in the stadium stands and sings a happy song. He was skeptical and surprised THAT was true.
Went to the club across the street and saw a metal cover band. Good stuff.
Sometimes traveling for work can turn into some good fun.
I went to a game there last year, but we sat in the bleachers in the outfield. The atmosphere around the ballpark before the game is crazy.

Yeah, it’s hard to see from my crappy ass Blackberry camera pic, but out beyond right field are seats on top of the building tops. It’s pretty cool. I guess you have to go up through the buildings to get to the rooftop seats.
FINALLY! A thread I can really appreciate. Been a Cubs fan since I was a small child. I’ve seen them play dozens of times at other stadiums, but everytime I made the trek back Illinois the Cubs were always sold out. Same thing happening again this July.

Yeah, you do. The rooftops all banded together and there is a Rooftop Association or something. The house with the Horseshoe Casino on it used to be Budweiser. The roof was painted red with “Budweiser” painted in white. The kid who lived there, and still does now that he’s grown up, was very popular during baseball season b/c you could see the game from the attic window. Some of the three-flats around Wrigley have a bar on the top floor that services the rooftop bleachers. Going to a Cubs game can be an all day event.

“I have been there many times and yes it does smell like urine. The cubs “fans” only care about getting wasted and peeing where ever they can. They don’t actually watch the game. That’s why the owners don’t need to field a winning team. Cubs and their fans suck!”
Take no offense Grneyes, haha, I just happen to think the MAJORITY of Cubs fans are like this.
Anyways, I’m gonna go see Eyehategod right now at Empty Bottle. Go White Sox (who am I kidding, both teams are sucking it up right now).
Oh and my friend’s sister has been dating Sean Marshall for two years, haha. She’s a waitress/bartender/something at one of the rooftops.

The Cubs have sucked for quite some time now. Since about the 50s. They’ve strung together a several winning seasons in that time, but they are few and far between. This year’s team has to be one of the biggest disappointments they’ve put together in a while. Hopefully, come July they will become sellers and start focusing on the younger players. Get rid of Zambrano, Fukudome, and some other high priced do nothings.

I agree with you. Also a huge let down is Lou Piniella. That guy was brought in to do one thing: win a fucking world series. Dusty Baker got them close towards the end, and then Lou’s first season was good (I think?), and it’s been downhill from there. I just hate that guy though. He thinks he’s above everyone else and just rants when he gets criticized, and of course brings up his statistics (his win number) to counter them.

I would rather have Lou than Dusty, but their GM Jim Hendry is the biggest problem. In 2008 they won 97 games and he immediately got rid of two everyday starters (Jim Edmonds and Mark DeRosa), the closer (Kerry Wood), and brings in Milton Bradley who had only once played over 140 games. This is the same guy that put together a starting rotation in 2006 of Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Jerome Williams, and Glendon Rusch (all four combined for 4 wins).

I live in Chicago about 10 minitues from Wrigley, if you have never been there go, but, if you have easy access to it you either love it or hate it. For those of you that dont live in Chicago the Sox vs Cubs rivalry is huge, i love the White Sox, I think Wrigley Field is a rundown piece of shit. The people that go to those games are not even real fans, people in the stands cant give me a starting lineup. There are way more Wrigley field fans than actual cubs fans. Wrigley field is a large beer garden. Its also in the middle of a neighborhood that has like 100 bars. You drink before the game, you drink during, you drink after. People go for the experience not baseball. Go Sox.[/quote]
That’s funny. I have sadly never been to a game at Wrigley, but it always seemed from watching WGN that the fans there were pretty knowledgable about the game. I know from talking to other Cubs fans in Houston, Atlanta, Arlington, and St. Louis; they are very diehard and very up to date on what’s going on. I could see Wrigleyville though being a drunken wasteland. Hell, Harry Caray was damn near drunk during some broadcasts.
The cubs can’t win a world series because they didn’t let that goat in the stadium in 1945. Everyone knows this.
Edit - I’ve been to Wrigley field, too. It’s a nice stadium for historical reasons but honestly, stadiums built these days are much nicer. Still, I’m glad I got to go once, I’ve never seen the old Yankee stadium.

Well, it would help if Lou stopped changing the line up. Theriot was doing great as the lead-off guy. Soriano…eh…we can get rid of him. Having Lee and Ramirez always batting third and fourth and whoever the catcher is, either Soto or Hill bat 8th, leaves very little room to play with. I think Soriano always bats second, unless he’s having a slump. Castro bats…wherever Lou puts him. The 6th and 7th spots always rotate depending on who is actually hitting and helping the team or not.
Castro is awesome, he’s young and athletic and could possibly turn into an awesome ballplayer. Having said that, getting rid of DeRosa was stupid. It was nice having a three-headed second base/shortstop (Theriot/Fontenot/DeRosa). And if DeRosa was needed to play center or right or left or third base, he was always up for it.
Don’t let CubanMeat fool you. We know our starting lineup, and yes, we do have a good time when we go to the game. The difference between Wrigley Field and New Comisky (Yeah, I still call it that) is that you won’t get stabbed, mugged, carjacked, raped, or hustled by a bunch of South Side thugs. Go Cubs.

False. The new South Side is the West Side, everyone knows this. In fact me and CubanMeat were talking about this the other day.
You have never experienced a men’s room trough until you have been to Wrigley.

You’re my new BFF.
I’m a Sox fan who lives 4 blocks from Wrigley, but I take my kids to a bunch of Cubs games every year b/c it’s close by. The place is an absolute shit hole. Not only that, but very often the crowd is full of collar poppin dbags whose goal is to appear on TV with their girlfriend from Schaumberg while talking on their cell phone.
Two years ago I took my kids (4, 5, and 6 at the time) to 14 Sox games and 6 Cubs games. Every time I took my kids to the bathroom at Sox Park, people let me cut in line with the kids. Never happened at Wrigley.
Go Sox.
Edit: I sound bitter b/c Greece just missed a shot on goal.

Old Yankee stadium was magical, man. An ALCS game against the Sox at the old Yankee stadium in the right field bleachers is unlike anything else. Been to the new Yankee stadium twice. Although spectacularly outfitted, it doesn’t have the same feel at all; however, a championship in the first season is all you can really ask for.
