Cheap Nuts, Good for Snacks

wal mart has a huge can of mixed nuts it includes brazil nuts, macadamia, almonds, pecans, cashews and peanuts and is pretty low on salt, for around 7 bucks. this is a good healthy snack for a weightlifter right? I have been adding raisins and shaking it up, that’s what I munch on all day.

yeah man, good stuff. just make sure you are eating in line with your goals. it is easy to eat too many.

you might look into the bulk sections at various supermarkets as well.

also, i hope you are eating high protein all day as well…

Make sure there is no MSG in there. Even Planters still uses it on some of their peanuts so I wouldn’t put it past Walmart.

Since you are bulking this won’t be a problem but, I hate mixed nuts for cutting because I can’t keep close track of macronutrients (cashews and some other nuts have a lot of carbs, almonds are a better source of fiber and protein than others, etc).

I like the idea but don’t buy anything from Wal-mart. The low prices come from fucking everyone under their thumb. The managers are taught how to cheat the employees out of overtime, how to threaten people into actually working for free to keep their jobs, all kinds of evil shit. Some kid in Asia gets a dollar for a 14 hour day, just to get cheap prices at Wal-Mart. Fuck Wal-mart.

Keep in mind macadamia nuts are often allergenic if eating all the time for too long. Similar with peanuts. Its important to rotate your sources of nuts/legumes, just like any other food source.

Walnuts are highest in omega-3 content.

Pumpkin seeds are decent too, shelled. I find it’s much easier to down 500-600 calories worth of these tiny seeds as opposed to the mixed nuts.

Get yourself some scales and weigh/measure them out. It’s amazing how many calories are in such a small amount of nuts.

the thing with nuts is they MUST be fresh.

everyone seems to think that nuts last forever but that’s not true. rancid fat is carcinogenic, don’t eat it.

I buy almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, hazel nuts, pecans, and brazil nuts by the pound at a local farmers marked all raw and unsalted. Roughly $7 a pound. I then mix and match in my meals.

local farmer markets are popping up all over this time of year I will have to check a few out, sounds about the same price too.

Ps I hate wal mart too but I occasionaly get sucked in there cause there the closest grocery store to me.
