Chargers vs. Pats ?

He should’ve went down, yeah, but when it’s a high speed high pressure game like that and you have a chance for an interception, it’s against your instincts to knock it down.

It’s not against your instincts if you practice it. It is known on 4th down that you don’t make the interception if you can knock it down. In fact, the knockdown in this situation should have been instinctive to him. You see it happen all the time. In hail mary situations, the defenders always try to knock down and rarely go for the interception.

So it’s either a case of poor coaching, which I doubt since likely every coach he’s had since Pop Warner should have been teaching this, or wanting individual stats more than the win.

Joe Buck used to be real good. He’s gotten a little goofy now, but he’s still decent. I, personally like Collinsworth.

I think he offers the best balance of explaining things, offering insight and answering the “why’s” of a game, staying on topic during the game, and keeping the ass-kissing to a minimum. He does have something about his demeanor and personality that makes me want to not like him, but as far as the job, I think he does it well.

Well i’m going to concede this point since i’ve never played on a “real” football team, so I can’t argue as to what’s coached and what not.

I wasn’t making an attack on you or your comment. It was more of a frustration comment that this “professional” player did this.

Yes, all players make mistakes, and a lot of players will make very stupid mistakes from time to time, but you have to be aware of the situation in an important game.

Football is a situational game. Everything that takes place on the field should be done for a reason. Teams run to set up the pass. Teams blitz to make up for a weak pass rush or weak secondary. Etc, etc. So practices are almost entirely situational. This situation must have come up sometime in his playing career.

Then again, maybe I’m just being too hard on him.

joe buck has been a joke ever since the randy moss incident. he also sucks at baseball.

my beef with announcers in general is that they try to do too much. they often talk like their audience has never watched a game before (ie instant replay issues and other rules of the game) and doesn’t already know the majority of the fluff they present as supposid interesting anecdote.

For me, either announce like your audience is an experienced fan, or offer a seperate ‘announcing soundtrack’.

I can’t wait to see the pats beat indy on sunday. After the game, Belichick should go on the 50 and do an imitation of mannings stupid ass face he makes every time a belichick defense confuses the hell out of him.
Still, the colts have played well against the pats in the last two regular season games. If the pats do beat indy this week, I would expect dungy to deserve the blame, not manning.

I sure hope the Patriots don’t do anything like that.

One of the reason’s I enjoy watching the Patriots is because they don’t talk trash all week long and when they win they do it with class (generally).

It’s nice to see a team act like that in PROFESSIONAL sports.[/quote]

Joker, I think Cougar was joking, man. But personally I love when Manning makes that face and I hope to see more of that next weekend.

The announcers have to explain things because the networks want them and need them too. There are always people watching that have never watched a game before. You’d be surprised how little even “experienced fans” know. I recently watched a game where I was the only one in the room that knew that the ball was now snapped 8 yards on a field goal attempt and not 7. There’s a lot of rules of the game that even serious fans don’t know or don’t understand.

This is what John Madden was so good at earlier in his career. He could communicate things for the unknowledgeable without dumbing-down his commentary for the rest of the audience. He’s gotten goofy now, but he’s decent at it.

When I watch a game, I hope the color man can teach me something. I want to know why this-or-that happened. This is why I love watching Ron Jaworski on NFL Matchup. He is the best at explaining the little details of plays.

But, in the end, most announcers are just idiots.

I agree. His personality can be irritating but I think he gives a more unvarnished perspective. Some of the other guys try to always put a spin on things to not maake someone look bad.

I wanted to bring up something malone alluded too…

Is it just me…or have Buck AND Bob Costas gotten a little “full of themselves” with their crazy comments and poor attempts at humor?

I think that they both were a LOT better Broadcasters when they were a little more “hungry”?

Anyway…I’ve been a little disappointed lately in their attempts at humor and schtick…

It ain’t working for me…

Any thoughts?

I have a good friend that is one of those “Brady invented the QB position” fanatics.

He gets irate when he sees Manning’s “…if you like 6’5” 240lb qb’s with a laser rocket arm…" commercial.

So naturally I try to work it into every conversation we have.

Manning has made some classic commercials (the one mentioned above with the laser rocket arm and who can forget, “D-CAFF!” Heh, that’s friggin’ hilarious)… But the only two I saw Brady in with the Offensive Line in it were hilarious (Visa Check Card I think it was).

Colts vs. Pats – another great game on tap this weekend. Was it Mufasa or Zap who said that the Colts window is closing fast with this team. I agree and think that is why they will win. Plus their Defense has surprisingly come to life in the playoffs. But how can you ever go against the Patriots I mean 12 - 1. I think, but can’t prove, that the Colts will just want it more. They are sick of being the greatest team that never makes it to the big dance.

Announcers – I also hate Phil Simms as an announcer but I think that Troy Aikman is pretty damn good. He gets to the point and he makes very good points without saying too much. Who woulda thunk it. When Troy announced he was going to do TV commentary I thoght it was a joke. If you remember his Dallas years he was about flat and prozac like in his interviews as anybody I have ever seen.

Go Saints!!! American’s new team.
