Chad Waterbury vs Stuart McRobert

McRoberts has a point; skinny guys won’t gain size until they gain strength first. It worked for me.

My two best routines ever are a twice a week Hardgainer setup, and a modified ABBH.

Now I rotate strength and sze phases every 4 weeks. Before I couldn’t gain a pound for YEARS, now natural gains come easy. I never would have guessed. So the answer is both.

Chad’s Ethos is that you NEED strength for size.He hammers this point home in most of his articles.Sure some are more Hypertrophy based but NONE leave out strength. as a result Iv’e doubled if not trippled my strength in some lifts using ONLY CW workouts for the last 8-9 months.Even when 4 of those months I was at a kcal defecit.

I like SM’s stuff without all the whining. There are some good hardgainer writers (from the magazine) that offer a lot. I’d check out john christy’s website for some programs. I like the basic philosophy of most HG routines. Full body, 2-3 times a week, make sure you’re adding weight to the bar overtime, and don’t eat retardedly (too little or too much for average people). NIce and simple.

The only gripe I have with McRobert’s material is that he qualifies everything by saying (in effect), “but remember, you’re a hardgainer and you probably won’t put on much muscle.”

This is bull, and for a beginner could make them not even bother starting to train at all.

I think McRoberts applies his own shortcomings to everyone.

Don’t just assume the ‘hardgainer’ tag.

It’s much easier to say, “Oh, I must be a hardgainer” rather than look at your diet and programme if things aren’t going right. But by doing so, you could waste a lot of your potential.
