A 50 year old scandal that the church is STILL covering up! The Catholic Church STOLE over 300,000 babies from mothers that they determined to “unfit” (read, “unmarried”) and told them their baby was dead. They then SOLD the baby to an affluent, religious family. Now that the secret is out, some of the nuns involved are actually being brought up on criminal charges because EVEN NOW, they refuse to “break their vows” and help the stolen children reunite with their parents or give access to the records they kept.
UNBELIEVABLE.
I don’t know about you guys, but if I found out that some fucking priest or nun stole my baby from me and THEN NOT HELP ME FIND IT?! I might take that VERY personally… I’d be cutting off holy fingers and toes until I found my kid.
Let’s see how this develops before jumping to conclusions. What actually happened and who knew needs to be certain before declaring this immediately everything the BBC alleges.

And if the story is true, the scandal is actually more than 50 year old.
It started in the 40s, under Franco’s rule.
Apparently, there was many actors and institutions involved. Not only the Church.

It was hospitals with a “St.” in front of their name stealing the babies. It was NUNS taking the actual babies. It was the church vetting “appropriate” families.
I’m pretty horrified about what happened, but hey - it was a long time ago, right? But the turd in the punch bowl is that the church and the nuns are stonewalling the victims NOW. They are denying access to records they kept. They are “keeping vows” and refusing to help reunite people with their blood relatives. THAT’S what I find about this that is so distasteful.
Every institution that’s been around for more than 50 years has done some shit decades ago that we find horrifying today. That’s a fact of life. But most institutions at least TRY to make reparations for what they did, or even offer a public apology. Not add insult to injury by essentially saying, “yeah we stole your baby 40 years ago and we probably have a record of when and where we sold him/her. But FUCK YOU, we aren’t going to help you. We’re the RCC and you can’t MAKE us!”
