I have heard/read that drinking/eating something before you sleep that has a casein protein in it can be beneficial for muscle building purposes because unlike faster digesting proteins, casein is relatively slow digesting and hence will keep your body out of a catabolic state while you sleep. I know milk, cottage cheese, stuff of this nature have a casein, but how important is it really to eat cottage cheese/drink milk/drink a casein shake before you sleep?
Also, if it really is of paramount importance (which is hard to believe) is it necessary if you are cutting?
Casein shake +some peanuts or peanut butter to slow the absorption of the protein so it lasts the full 8 hours you are asleep is something I try to do whenever funds permit.
I like a shake with 2 scoops Metabolic Drive and 2tbsp of real flaxseed oil (the kind in the black bottle that you have to keep refrigerated; you can find it at Whole Foods, I prefer Barlean’s brand)
I’ve found that it really helps my recovery having some cot. chz and mixed nuts at night.
If your cutting I’d say that it would be MORE important because you spend the whole day in caloric deficit and then go to bed. If you don’t then your empty all night AND lacking all day.
Toss in some BCAA at night too if you really wanna keep as much muscle/strength as you can.
If I’m leaning out, I’ll have just casein + psyllium husk fiber to help slow down it’s digestion/absorption. If I’m not being concerned about calories I do exactly what waylander does or even have a few jumbo sized eggs instead.

I think it adds up in the long run.[/quote]
x2 It makes a difference over time, unfortunately I don’t have the dough for it now
Preserving your muscle mass is the most important thing you can do when cutting. It is what determines how fast your metabolism is able to run at despite restricted calories and excessive energy expenditure. If your body will be building/maintaining your muscle while you sleep, don’t you think it would be important to give it the necessary materials to do so with?
