Lotus 2-Eleven. 640kg, 252hp, 0-60 - 3.8. I’m considering one of these as my second car. Actually, I’m considering a lot of things as my second car. Not sure I want to sell the Commodore though so it might be my third.

Oops. Forgot to add pic. The Lotus 2-Eleven…

Really? It’s the most efficient way of driving. The only problem is your brake lights down go on when you slow so you have to be careful you don’t get hit by the guy behind you.

I downshift to slow down, but not into first. It’s usually damn near impossible to get it in first gear while moving, and it’s not worth forcing it.
Same here, the syncros on my car don’t like going into first even while just rolling.
Most the thumpers(single cylinder motorcycles) have the opposite problem; they’ll stall if you go too slow in second. Actually I never considered it a problem; just how they function. A too rich stoich ratio will choke out your engine and make it stall more easily.

The other night I was on the road at around 3 AM and I came alongside a lady in a silver CL63 AMG. We didn’t exactly “race” each other but rather liberally disobeyed the speed limits together in an exhilarating rush of caffeine fueled mania, before parting ways never to see the other again. Whisked away in the sands of time; her bracelet dangling jauntily out the window; her exited glances in the rearview mirror. She looked the married type; but definitely wild. Wild is great but I stay away from crazy. We didn’t do anything dangerous. And it’s certainly not cheating. ![]()

There is a really good short story that begins just like this. It’s a horror story though. And for the life of me I can’t think of the name. I THINK it was a Ray Bradbury story, but I’m not sure.

Yeah? I wouldn’t mind reading that. The above is entirely true in every regard; furthermore, pretty much the same thing has happened to me many times. The thrill and exhilaration of danger and sex is closely related. That’s what Lynch’s film Crash was about. And truth be told, I’ve been an adrenaline / danger junkie my whole life and paid the price of breaking most the major bones in my body and many minor ones. It’s pretty fucking crazy when you think about it.

FINALLY found it. It was bugging the crap out of me. The story is “Freeway Games” by Orson Scott Card. And it doesn’t really begin like that, but I won’t say too much if you want to read it. You’ll have to find one of his story collections that has it.

Thanks man. Sounds interesting and I’ll try to find a copy.
Just a word of warning for Audi owners: as I said before and realised again tonight the Quattro system is spastic for cornering at speeds above 160kmph. I nearly wiped myself out tonight trying to keep up with a Porsche that also nearly wiped himself out. Terribly stupid. I don’t know what came over me. That section of road has claimed huge numbers of lives especially motorcyclists. There’s miniature crosses everywhere. It’s the section of the Pacific Highway between Brooklyn and Cowan if anyone is interested. There’s a “Pie in the Sky” cafe halfway along the route. I’ve been racing on that section for years in cars and motorcycles. Anyway, don’t ever try to take a corner above 160kmph in a Quattro or you’re liable to come a cropper.
This is actually the section of road I’m talking about:
I’ve mentioned previously that I’ve always had a compulsive urge to engage in extremely dangerous behaviour. I should be dead twenty times over with the incredible number of close calls. On that section of road I nearly wiped myself out countless times on motorcycles. It’s why I actually sold my bike to be honest. I knew it was just a matter of time before I killed myself and so I just had to get rid of the darn thing and go cold turkey on motorcycles which I’ve raced since I was 10. I guess I’ve been compensating a bit with cars lately.

Quattro’s notorious weak link is the nut behind the wheel.

Quattro’s notorious weak link is the nut behind the wheel. There’s a fix for that, though.

Funny. But its weak link is building false confidence by sticking to the road like glue then suddenly becoming uncontrollable and unstable manuuvering at very high speeds. i previously noticed it when I was fooling around on a three lane highway with 110kph speed limit. There are just some things a rear wheel drive can do that an AWD can’t and vice versa. Same with front wheel drives. Although the only thing I noticed front wheel drives do better is steering at speed on a steep uphill gradient. But a front wheel drive will oversteer and become unstable around corners at very high speed. I’m not criticising the tools. I’m just saying you need to understand what they can and can’t do.

Huh.
You’d think after 35 years and myriad Rally championships, Audi’s engineers would’ve done something about that by now.
Be safe out there, SM.
I’ve attempted to spin out my S4 many times (off-road private property) and it never wanted to play. In the snow i had fun, but the snow tires made it all serious again.
Did you get the sport rear diff option?

Crazy would be if you’re too scared to push yourself.

Yes - drive select with dynamic steering, adaptive dampers and sports dif. Actually the truth is we were both actually pushing it beyond what a rally driver would do. We both just pushed our cars to their utter limit. You know that feeling in the pit of your stomach of sheer dread because you’re afraid to apply any more brakes or you’ll lose control and afraid not to or you won’t make the corner? Like that at every turn till we both nearly wiped out.

I usually dont get that felling until after, when i realize how close to fucking up i was.
I don’t have much experience with AWDs and I think that’s why I’m a bit unnerved by how the Quattro handles near its limit. In a rear wheel drive I know what to expect when the rear wheels lose traction and I can control it. But when the Audi starts to skid I have no idea what it’s going to do. It either holds or it doesn’t and so far it has.
When in doubt, just floor it. Saved my ass a few times doing that with quattro, although i dint have any driver aids like the new models have.
