Cars - American Cool

In a straight line, I’d take the 427, natch.

If I actually have to turn, a great case can be made for the 289.

A 7L engine is just so over the top, I think I’d have to have it no matter what.

Is SB with blower an option?

Oh, and make mine copper.

I’ll get killed for this, but i’d want something other than a V8 in my cobra replica. I’m thinking a 2JZ from a supra with a basketball sized turbo, or the S54 out of an M3. I just think those cars are played out with V8’s, they are kit cars…

A 2jz swap would be pretty cool.

Not driving a car to keep the miles low is the equivalent of not fucking your girlfriend so she stays tight for the next guy.
Even though I wasn’t offended by your statement earlier I am going to pretend that I was so I can say your quote relieved you of my scorn. So beautifully put…

This thread really makes me miss my motorcycle

That’s awesome.

How about a Kenny Brown Marauder S? Everyone will get out of your way on the highway because they think you’re a trooper.

460hp from a blown 8. 0 - 60 in 4.5 seconds for about $50k back in 2003.

Such an awesome car. The regular 305hp version was pretty good back in it’s day too.

That would help in moving hockey bags to the ice rink!

You’d get there in no time flat.

This just went for sale in my town for 9K…

American cars really are making a comeback. I think the manufacturers realized that people have stopped buying American because Europe and Japan had much more to offer. More usability at least. Horsepower is nothing if it can't be translated to the road, in fact it's downright annoying and dangerous. I repair/modify cars and I sometimes get to tune on a track.

I absolutely hate it when a client brings in an American car. Very few great cars have ever come out of America but to be honest when they do, they’re magnificent. The C7 Stingray is the best American sports car I’ve driven since the Ford GT(I haven’t driven the Z06 yet).

These are downright the best American cars I’ve ever driven(some were modified):

-Corvette C7 Stingray(a huge leap forward in terms of driving feel and chassis)
-Covette C6 Z06(insane to drive on a big racetrack…but only on a racetrack)
-Caprice/Lumina SS(big and brutal with a lot of character, you can throw it around and enjoy the powerslide)
-Shelby Cobra 427 recreation(I’d put it last on the list as the cool factor comes into play a bit more than the car itself)
-Ford GT(The best American car ever made, I still have dreams about that gearbox)
-Ford Fiesta ST(needs a bit of speed to convince you)
-Ford Focus ST/RS(Surprisingly handles 300HP)

BTW, I don’t know how many folks know this, but you can buy Shelby Cobras new. Actual, official Shelby Cobra’s made by Shelby American, authentic registered cars.
No, they are not the million dollar cars of the '60’s, they are new cars. In reality they are better cars than the originals offering updated suspensions and motor options. They aren’t cheap, but they are real and way cheaper than their classic car brethren.

Carol Shelby decided in 1988 to start making Cobra’s again. I guess he saw the success of all the knock off Cobra kits on the market and decided to undercut them all by making real, official, registered cars.
Needless to say, I want one! Bad. I don’t want an old one, I want a new one I can drive with out having a panic attack should some dumb ass damage it.

So the only real question is, 289 or 427? There’s good arguments for both…
Sorry, you are right:

I really dig the 50th anniversary 289 Cobra, but they only made 50 of them, but I am sure you can spec out a 289 to be very close. I think as a ‘driver’s car’ the 289 is probably more fun. But for sheer absurdity you cannot beat the 427.

Man, if it’s in good shape and got relatively low miles, it may be worthy of snatching up. It’s a shame these GTO’s came out near the end of Pontiac. They are way better than their sales numbers indicate.
It was built on the Holden Commodore platform, wasn’t it? Either way, I really liked them when they came out. They look a lot better in person than they do in pictures. And you can’t argue with 400 HP.

That GTO could have been so much more. It’s looks are just so…Pontiac. It looked like it could have been a next-generation Grand Prix.

That said, I’d love to pick one up used.

They really shouldn’t have put the GTO label on it.
