Which is about %2 of the population. The rest treat their car as an appliance and would rather be texting their friends/eating their breakfast/applying their makeup.

Mine.

1968 Cov’t with the 289 2v. Not a great pic, it’s from a couple years ago. Just had gotten it back from the body shop. The old frame rails were nearly nonexistant, the floor pans looked like swiss cheese, and the firewall had rusted.

Since then, I’ve done/had done a ton of work. New shoes, new wheel cylinders, new wheel bearings, power brake conversion, timing chain, fuel pump, water pump, oil pump, electronic ignition, new suspension bushings all around, new 4 bbl carb, etc…

I’ve done most of the work, except the suspension stuff. Some of those bushings were original and I do not have the patience to get that stuff out without breaking shit.

This summer, I’ll drop the upper control arms by an inch, add an aftermarket export brace and monte carlo bar (2 braces in the engine compartment: one ties the shock towers together, the other ties the shock towers to the firewall), and have someone weld in some subframe braces for me.

Long term plans…well, it seems each item I want to do costs $2k. Discs all around would be nice, as would new leafs in back. Someone is making an electric steering kit that looks terrific and would certainly be a step up from the manual steering it has now. Right now, with drum brakes and manual steering I don’t even want to think about engine mods.

There’s people who actually WANT self driving cars, because driving is such a chore. Gorgeous Mustang though, one of the nicest cars ever made.

My truck has traction control and I HATE that shit when I am driving down a snowy dirt road. I generally turn it off in the winter. If it is snowy enough to need it, it has to be off anyhow and you can’t drift around corners with it on.
I think it has a lot to do with how well the TC is done on the car. Some cars it’s a seamless feature, only popping up when needed and barely noticeable. Others are obnoxiously intrusive. From my experience, the Japanese to TC the worst. It interrupts when there is absolutely no need. The TC in my car is really well done. It just makes you think you can actually drive well. I only turn it off if I want to do a burnout or something, but at $300 bucks a tire, I don’t do many of those. Ahh, but when it comes time to replace them I am pulling up to the shop with the belts showing and melted rubber dripping down the side.
The TC on my car is terrible, it doesn’t help at all. It just automatically applies heavy brakes until the traction is resumed. It’s actually gotten me closer to a crash than not having it on at all. In winter it’s always off whenever there’s snow, the car is just a lot more predictable that way.
Based on what you said, I would agree your TC sucks… Predictability of the driving dynamics is very important and if the TC takes away from that, I dare say it makes the drive more dangerous.

There are self driving cars, they are called ‘The bus’

For people who want self driving cars (go past 45 seconds you can’t hear until then). It’s my favorite song!

so much truth. Just check the recent “buying new car” thread on this forum. No offense to anyone in that thread, but it’s 100% an appliance discussion.

Applaud!!!
Real cars are rear or all wheel drive. FWD is so limiting in its potential. The Focus ST is the only front driver I would even consider, but I would like it tons more if it drove the rears.
the VR6 VW Corrado, Acura integra type-R, and viggen model saabs are the only wrong wheel drives i would enjoy owning. The viggen and VR6 would both need lsd’s installed before taking ownership (comes oem on the R)

I’m in that thread!! The guy was asking for an appliance not a driver’s car so I supplied him with answers. Doesn’t mean we don’t want a fun toy.

Besides, you quoted Saab below. I’ve got a 9-3 Arc (not viggen). It’s FWD so it has that going against it but it moves well, can handle, and was inexpensive with a fun tuner base. The newer ones come with an AWD LSD option. I’d be interested in one of those- a slight tune and they are putting down ~340ish to the wheels.

Let’s narrow that focus down even more. How many people that call themselves “enthusiasts” actually spend time on the race track. Hell, how many people spend time in the canyons (or whatever twisty roads are local to you)? I rarely see any performance cars being driven in anger when I’m out on a Sunday morning in the back country. I see even fewer cars being trailered up to Willow Springs Raceway. But I always see bikes doing both.

I dint intend to insult anyone, but to make the point that 98% of the population views their vehicle the same as their toaster.

I don’t think you have to do anything to ‘prove’ you are a car enthusiast. It’s not a cheap hobby after all and tracking you car is definitely not cheap. That doesn’t mean you don’t have a passion for cars. I think that’s all you really need, love of cars. People are into different aspects of cars and I think that’s just fine.
That being said, if you have a car that can raise hell it’s required you occasionally raise hell in it. In appropriate and safe situations of course, but you should put your car through the paces. Trailer queens are a waste of automobilia. Cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed.

BTW, I don’t know how many folks know this, but you can buy Shelby Cobras new. Actual, official Shelby Cobra’s made by Shelby American, authentic registered cars.
No, they are not the million dollar cars of the '60’s, they are new cars. In reality they are better cars than the originals offering updated suspensions and motor options. They aren’t cheap, but they are real and way cheaper than their classic car brethren.

Carol Shelby decided in 1988 to start making Cobra’s again. I guess he saw the success of all the knock off Cobra kits on the market and decided to undercut them all by making real, official, registered cars.
Needless to say, I want one! Bad. I don’t want an old one, I want a new one I can drive with out having a panic attack should some dumb ass damage it.

So the only real question is, 289 or 427? There’s good arguments for both…

Not driving a car to keep the miles low is the equivalent of not fucking your girlfriend so she stays tight for the next guy.

And when a Mustang GT 500 just does not satisfy, there is the Shelby 1000. Now originally the car was a huge disappointment making only 960 HP. The Shelby team woke up and decided to stop making the car so weak and have updated the motor to making 1100 HP at the wheels, on pump gas. And yes, you can get a convertible version if you want. I think I prefer the coup.
Basically, you have a GT 500 per rear wheel.

lol, sounds like Shelby’s “continuation” Cobras. When he got busted for lying about using NOS (new old stock, not “nawz”) he decided to market the cars as historic replicas. There’s nothing wrong with the cars themselves, but the first ones weren’t what Carroll said they were.

I took a ride in a replica Cobra 427 a few years back as a passenger… you’d never know it was a replica, wicked fast and handled great.
