Carnivore vs high carb diet

Hello @Ellington_Darden Do you have an opinion of the carnivore diet (80/20 fat/protein, no fruit/veggies/grains/cereals/carbs of any sort)? I’m 54 and have felt great while on it with plenty of more even burning energy (after getting fat- adapted), great sleep, less soreness & inflammation generally, better recovery, etc, but on reading John Little’s new Mentzer biography and rediscovering your guidance on diet, I’m curious if you’ve had much experience with it.

BTW, thanks again for convincing me NOT to pursue bodybuilding as a skinny 18yo in Dallas in 1989 with thick ankles, wide hips, and short muscle bellies. I’ve been catching on men’s league baseball teams for 30+ years and have had much more success!

Hi rkutner, Not Dr. Darden - but I’ll reply. If that diet is working for you and you’re happy, why change? Success hinges on belief and you’re clearly very committed to the Carnivore diet and have had great success with it - keep going! I don’t know if Dr. Darden has much experience with the carnivore diet. Literally everything he has written discusses the use of Carbs as the pre-dominant source of macros. Hope that helps.

Here is a link to a recent post by our resident Incredibly Successful In All Arenas Carnivore Guy (strongman, health markers, martial arts, occasional 10K, etc). His training log might be a good resource for you, as he has reported very similar results after dropping plants.

Appreciate the love there @EmilyQ ! I stayed out of here just because it was specifically aimed at Dr. Darden, but certainly something I’m happy to discuss.

Although I will clarify it’s a 10 miler, rather than a 10k, haha.

Surely you know that I would not be for the carnivore diet. Carbohydrates, or hydrated carbons, are absolutely important for recovery and muscle building. Go back and read what I say in The New High Intensity Training book, pages 228-230.
