Do you do it? If so, what do you prefer? Low intensity “slow and steady” or high intensity, intervals? and why?
Yes, whichever one I feel like.
I preffer to do ellipticals with my own set-up intervals… high intensity stuff for a few minutes and a few back off minutes, done anywhere from 20-30 minutes post work-out.
Then there’s walking for fasted morning cardio.
And I do prowlers.
And sprints.
Yeah, I do cardio.
I mostly walk/speed walk on the treadmill on a slight incline or get on the elliptical, increasing the level of the exercise so I start sweating and get a good increase in heart rate.
Right now, I’m bulking, so I do cardio just as a preventive measure to counteract fat accumulation. In addition, because I’m trying to gain weight, I’m pretty much doing cardio when I’m in the mood to do it. Thus, I’m not as strict about it as I would be were I on a cut.
I like doing circuits or intervals… I get way too bored doing SS cardio. Sometimes I’ll hit the stairmaster for 20 minutes but thats max for me.
Usually I’ll get out my weighted jump ropes after my workout and do a little circuit of jump ropes, burpees and sprints. Rest and repeat.
Or my new favorite is to grab a pair of the 40lb dumbbells and do sets of weighted burpees… 3 or 4 sets of 10 with 60 seconds rest in between will kick your ass.
Only when dieting
is there a difference to doing an hour of jogging for cardio vs banging it out with a high intensity run?
assuming the calories burnt are the same, the benefits of the high intensity run would be ^ in aerobic and anaerobic capacity vs the walk. however, what im trying to figure out is which is better for burning fat while preserving muscle? Low intensity activities tend to favor fat metabolism however the high intensity put you into a state of post exercise oxygen debt…need a little refresher on the physio

I’ve played around with regular cardio… elliptical, incline, etc. It’s just boring to me. I would never do that unless I had to prep for a show.
Don’t worry about that stuff iron. When you sprint, that beats the SHIT out of your legs. You have to tame down your weekly leg volume significantly when sprinting. That’s why I love the prowler… no eccentric, so my muscles don’t get torn to shreds but my lungs do.
i just do intervals on the treadmill until i cant breathe anymore, takes down a lot of calories in a short time. i dont really wanna change it up to something that takes more time, but if its burning a lot of muscle i will change it
wish i had a prowler tho…
anyone else here think the prowler is overrated and more of a trendy thing?

But… I don’t think sprinting has an eccentric either? I know anecdotally that sprinting/HIIT destroys your legs, but… yeah, kinda confused.
Anyways, I do… intermittently… sometimes. I really should do it regularly, but I don’t particularly enjoy it. Sometimes I go on the elliptical, sometimes I do sprints, and sometimes I flip tires and sometimes I mix it up. I should buy a sledge and go to town on one of those tires. That’d be fun.

i pushed a car with a couple of strongman buddies by my house the other day. if the prowler feels anything like that and im guessing it does than no it is not over rated.

No on both. I think it has it’s uses and I do wish it’s access is limited I’d hate to see untrained or cocky gym goers pushing it around my gym.
Yes it works on pushing up the heart rate, breaks the monotony of thinking about doing cardio and this is a trend that I wish doesn’t get emulated too much by the masses.

How do you do this? Carry it through the burpee cycle even during the push-up phase?

I do hill sprints for 5-10 mins once or twice a week (run up for about 15 secs, walk down same stretch). currently bulking, and the sprints really help to keep the fat gains to a mimimum while my training volume is pretty low at the moment (4x/week).
I would do steady pace cardio…if it didn’t bore the hell out of me! And if I didn’t have to multiply the duration by like over 10 just to get the same effect as HIIT.
All this talk about how sprinting negatively effects the big lifts ect, that’s not the case when you’ve adapted and you’re not doing too much sprinting. Besides, some the best strength athletes in the world do proper ‘hardcore’/intense versions of cardio every week while being the strongest persons on the planet.
EVERYONE who tries sprinting for the first time will really feel sore/drained in the legs etc, but this is normal to start with.
I’d like to never do it until I actually started putting on fat, but not running does not work in the Army.
Intervals FTW.
-Only during a prep
-Intervals twice a week (for short sessions, nothing too muscle wasting)
-Low Intensity work only when I need to knock of an extra 50 cals pre day when full-prep. Never instead of Intervals.

Yep. Hold the DBs, drop down into the pushup position, do a pushup between the DB’s, pop back into a crouch(like a DB deadlift position) and then stand up/explode into a jump as high as I can, then when I land I go right back into my next rep.
The jump is what is so tiring. You have to make sure you’re under the weights properly without rounding your back. That would be bad
