Cardio and Muscle Loss

The leaner you get the easier it is to go catabolic, as the the diets are near starvation. Right now I am dieting and i am constantly without energy I feel sluggish, and frequently am in the state of ketosis. It is a really shitty feeling but if you want to win, you have to gut it out. Were talking about gluteal striation here, and I think others are only thinking of defined abdominal muscles. It’s a completely different thing. >>>[/quote]

This is a very good point and well taken. Once you dip into single digits the room for error narrows a lot and becomes narrower on an ever tightening curve the leaner you get. I was speaking generally and had in mind the terminal over complication suffered by so many just shooting to be in decent shape.

Im doing cardio to get in shape for a mountain climb. I do 25 mins three times a week. But it is very intense. I usually go over 170 bpm.

I know it is only 75 minutes a week, but considering my intensity, I wonder if I’m not eating away any muscle mass.

Everybody’s different, but I doubt it. 75 straight minutes might be something else.

Make sure you are taking in a fast-acting protein carb drink like Surge, post cardio session to replenish your muscle glycogen. Your metabolism will still be cranked post cardio, but you will be preventing or at least minimizing muscle catabolism.

Well this is a Bodybuilding form, all there dosn’t seem to be too many serious competitors around posting here.

you mean that video?

levrone got a 7.8 for 60m

Here is what the poster said:

“Not only does Keven Levron lose in this 60m race, he gets blown out. Chambers runs an easy 6.64 seconds without track spikes, during the off season (when he is at his worse shape). Levrone ran 7.8 seconds, a time which most high school males and some high school females can easily beat.”

Thanks for posting that. Levron looks pretty slow. Good to know in case he is made at me, I can just run.

Of course he looks slow compared to one of the fastest sprinters in the world when the video was made. Assuming the video description is correct a 7.8 60m still is good for somebody weighting ~260 lbs and not specialized in sprinting.

Though how Levron could have possibly thought he was “the fastest man in the world” blows my mind.

I started a thread in this forum about a week ago called “Big Challenge for the Group” (though I know my “situation” is really only a big challenge for me!): http://www.T-Nation.com/tmagnum/readTopic.do?id=2081495&pageNo=0

In it, I lay out all my lame excuses as a “skinny-fat hardgainer” for the sole purpose of exposing them as just that: lame excuses.

While some of us may be more inclined than others (for a variety of reasons) toward a true “bodybuilder” physique, what this means to me personally is that I just have to train as well as I possibly can in order to build the best body possible for me… I’m realizing that this has more to do with knowledge than really anything else!

In any event, some guys over on the other thread have helped to get me started on the Rippetoe program… After one week, I’m loving it, and am very confident that, done correctly, this program will probably really work for me!

That said, I have a strong tendency toward putting on fat (especially having once been 250 pounds of nothing but fat and bone)… So, I’ve been struggling with the notion of adding some serious cardio into my routine…

What I’ve done specifically is to add a 3.5-mile run in on my non-lifting days. This includes some uphill here and there and some fairly intense “sprints”. Complete run takes me about 30 minutes or so.

This thread, though, has me thinking that I might be seriously limiting my muscle-building efforts. Do I need to choose what I really want right now: Lower my body fat % (currently 20% or 17%, depending on time of day I get on my obviously-very-limited scale), or try to add some muscle mass to my body?

Not sure what other info I should provide to get some advice, though I have posted a lot more details on the other thread…

I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone is different when it comes to cardio.

I actually ran into this thread on John Stone fitness:

http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/archive/index.php/t-36078.html

A couple guys say they got bigger legs from running than they ever did from squats…so who knows. Perhaps slow twitch dominant react differently to different exercises.

Anyways, I just wanted to thank you guys for all the info and opinions.

Peace
