Cardio After Weights

I’ve been reading lately a lot of theories that cardio after lifting may inhibit muscle gain. Basically the idea is the cell environment gets “confused” about what it should do to recover.
Anyone have any thoughts or experiences one way or the other? Is running a couple miles after you bench press going to leave you spinning your wheels?

Most importantly, why do you want to run a couple miles after bench pressing?

Conditioning is fine. Short and brutal.

Running for miles is probably counter-productive to the goals of that given day.

Just run on off-days.

Running a few miles after a weight session is fine in my humble opinion. EVERYONE should be able to belt out a few miles at a half decent pace after hitting the weights, even after a brutal leg session. What’s the point of benching 4 plates a side if you can’t run a while without going purple? - OK if your training for a PL’ing comp or something maybe…Hold on, fuck that no. If your fat ass can’t even manage a few miles then your in bad shape, period.

‘Look like Tarzan, perform like Jane’

Thanks all. Running a couple miles after a bench session is a random example, but like moog said, unless doing something that requires real specificity, I just personally prefer to be able to move a little

There’s plenty of research out there showing far better results from different methods, for this goal you have described. I would assume you are aware of at least some of it, because this thread exists.

So again, why do you want to jog a couple miles? If you are that into jogging then tear it up. Otherwise…shit don’t make no sense.

That’s fair. I have read some of the research. I think most of it is aimed at improved body composition rather than performance, but that’s probably minutiae. I guess I was just musing out loud whether giving your body two stimuli to recover from in the same short term window would really lead to diminished returns over the long haul. In practice I find it pretty simple to do a little more conditioning work when I’m feeling chubby and back it off when I’m feeling skinny. Just kind of curious about others’ real world experience in light of the studies

I’ve been giving “Predator Conditioning” a go. It’s too early to tell, but I like the training affect.

It’s worth a shot.

Nothing wrong with post workout conditioning…I push the prowler or run my hill 3-4 times a week…always after training.

Don’t overthink.

This, 100%. I used to think “cardio”, or “conditioning”, or whatever you want to call it, was lame. Then I realized I couldn’t do anything with even moderate intensity for more than 10 seconds and I’d always get little injuries. Now that I’ve stepped up the dedicated conditioning, I feel better, look better and seldom break down. I’ve also noticed I almost never get sick anymore.

I’m not saying go run a marathon, but there are certain fundamental human qualities we should all posses, and the ability to jog at a decent clip for 2 miles is one of them, specifically if you consider yourself fitness oriented. If you’re lifting 4 days a week, it’s really not too hard to sneak something in after 2-3 of those sessions.

I feel the same.I like to drag/pull my sled after most of my lifting sessions as well.

Sounds like most of us feel the same way. I actually have been liking the spin bikes lately. Super easy on my old man joints
