You’re starting to be be a stereotype, Beth. Next your profile photo will have you in a flannel shirt.
Subaru is the official vehicle brand of the National Ski Patrol - I live in the great white north and I both ski and snowboard. So yes, sterotype.
Subaru’s are way over-rated. For getting around town (as they are mostly used) they are no better than any front wheel drive but way more expensive. In snow country any four wheel drive truck or SUV is way more reliable than a Subaru. Clearance is the key in deep snow.

My 'Ru has more clearance than my jeep had, handles very well in the snow and ice (I was in 3 winter accidents with my jeep in 4W drive). Its true they are no better than any other car for around town. Its perfect for my way of life though and I can still take it into the back country.
Get a 68 F350 dually flatbed. You can go anywhere and tow anything. Also, run it with straight glass packs and down shift in crowded areas. Its a good look.

They create too much smug. Bad smug poluters.
Also, there was a study that Pious drivers are the rudest on the road (seriously).
The number of bumper stickers someone has on their Prius is directly proportional to the likelihood of them telling you that they’re a vegan without you even asking.

I’m going to say tires are by far the most important thing when driving in the snow. The second most important thing about winter driving is, the TIRES.
Or, heck, let’s do this with a 10 year old Ford F250 and your Tesla. Far cheaper, and the ladder frame convenietly placed at your sholder height chopping your head off would be super cool.
Seriously. Tesla’s are fine and all, and have great safety records for little tiny vehicles, but the bigger the vehicle, the safer it is. It’s just physics.
(Sorry about the rant; their ads are very misleading, as are the safety reports.)
And no, I don’t really want to chop off your head.
Yes and no.
Yes, when comparing crashes with smaller vehicles larger vehicles are safer for the occupant of the larger vehicle.
However, when comparing larger vehicles impacting stationary objects (trees, bridge abutments etc…) they are less safe. More energy (mass*velocity) and stiffer ladder frames to transfer that energy to the vehicles occupants = less safety.
Also, not insignificantly trucks are much more prone to rollovers. I imagine a tesla with all that battery mass low to the ground is quite difficult to roll.

Although tires are important putting a really nice set of snow tires on a rear wheel drive sports car doesn’t make it a snowmobile.
Assuming the snow isn’t deep enough to go over the bumper the most important aspect of traction is the “drive” of the vehicle. 4WD is obviously best then AWD then FWD and in a distant 4th is rear wheel drive.
Can’t tell you how many times I drive by a**holes going 10mph down the interstate in a sports car during a snowstorm. I bet they all have really great tires on them too but the minute they press the gas peddle they start fishtailing.

Oooh, glass packs will really up the status value of my Suburban!
I say just roll for a few with the BMW. Enjoy the ride and no payments in the meantime while you save up and decide on a different car. Only thing is you may find it hard to step back down once you have gotten used to the German rides.

Don’t get glasspacks if you have to spend very much time in parking garages. I cant go in one that I don’t set off half the car alarms if I push the accelerator and mine isn’t even that loud.

I recently inherited a car from a relative who passed away. It’s a 2003 BMW 325ci with 42K miles. It’s a sweet car to drive, but not super practical. Insurance costs a lot, it only takes premium gas, mpg isn’t great, and when it starts to break I know it’s going to cost a ton to repair.
I’m interested in selling or trading in this car to buy something that’s better on gas, cheaper to insure, and cheaper to repair. I’m thinking about something along the lines of a Hyundai Elantra with the hatchback so I can fit some shit in it when I take trips. I’m estimating my car to be worth around $10K, and would like to avoid spending more than that if possible.
Any recommendations? What do you guys drive?
So you are trading in a car you did not pay for just due to cost of maintenance (meaning all you listed)?
Are you a college student?
I would like to see the numbers of what the insurance difference, gas etc before I made a move. I have had about 5 BMW’s now, between the wife and I. I have been nothing but very happy with the reliability. Reason I keep getting them. I want to get in the car and not have any fucking problems.
Favorite story about a Prius is this guy I know works for one of the gas companies in sales. He’s bombed at a bar and sees a Prius. Proceeds to rip the windshield wiper of the bat claiming, “these aholes don’t by my gas.” People who drive these are ripping the spoon right out of my sons’ mouths. Pretty funny stuff.

Haha dude I hear ya. When I (rarely) drive I do drive a 68 f350 dually and it just has glass packs and garages are just awful for the reason you listed. Except, mine is louder than a screaming banshee.
