Especially with a cold pool to alternate with. Contrast showers are a great habit also.

I’ve never heard them called this, but I met a guy early in my lifting career who advocated it - flushing a muscle with more nutrients and bloodflow makes sense. Plus it feels great afterwards.

This. Plus it’s fun to be active with a purpose on “off” days.

Reminds me back in the day in a Flex magazine article Vic Ricardson claimed he ate 10k a day. ALL in the form of rice and skinless chicken breast.

Do less sets of squats or do the same but add an extra rest day, also starting strength is 5x5…yet, you’ve put that you do 4-5 x 8???

3x5.

Change your frequency and see how that goes. If you’re using a decent amount of weight for barbell squats, 3x a week is tough on recovery at any age. If possible, I’d recommend you switch to an asynchronous PPL hitting muscles directly every 5 days. I’m 60 and this works great for me !

Yes, I gave up on back squats on standard deadlifts years ago.

Here’s what I’ve done since, though obviously not in the same workout and not done indefinitely.

RDL’s and stiff-legged deadlifts
Hyperextensions
Trap bar deadlifts
Bulgarian split squats (I always do a variation of these weekly)
Reverse and lateral lunges
Hack squats
Leg presses

Standard deadlifts and back squats started giving me workout hangovers in my mid thirties and the fatigue accumulated by them is not worth it for me when I can train my legs with other exercises. Even if they were superior to other exercises, I’d still discontinue them.

Try chair yoga routine https://betterme.world/articles/30-day-chair-workout/ . I love the idea of doing a workout that’s low-impact but still effective, especially on days when I’m feeling tired. The 30-day chair workout plan I found is perfect for beginners or anyone who needs a gentler workout option. It targets all areas of the body and can be done from the comfort of your chair.

Which back problem in particular?

Well shit! There’s the issue
