Can't Look at T-Nation at Work!

I have been looking at T-Nation at work since august when I started working there. I’m a football coach and help with the strength and conditioning program so it is even relevant to work. Now, just today, the filter at the school decides that T-Nation is full of “Adult content” and that it should be blocked. I’m also the only person in the school that even gets on that site. It pisses me off. So anyway I talked to the IT person at the school to see if she will unblock it for me. God I hope she does. Anyway I had to rant.

Wow what a surprise that they won’t allow you to look at a web site that has photo’s of nearly naked women during school hours.

Those terrible people.

I’m not on there to look at the pictures. plus you can google worse than that. Besides, the pictures are moderated. They aren’t nekkid.

Wow what a surprise that a football coach who enjoys strength training and looks for ways to help his players on a lifting site would want to be on T-Nation.

He’s definitely a terrible person.

No shit. Good Point. Furthermore its not like he can’t set his personal settings to not show some of these images and as long as he isn’t hanging in the Ass Worship thread what is the big deal?

my man, use a proxy.

cooltunnel.com

Use Google to search for “cgi proxy”.

Go nuts.

Oh I get it. Just because there is worse on the net you feel that it would be okay.

If I had a young son or daughter who happened to walk in on you while you were gazing at the pics I’d make sure you were fired.

There are plenty of other sites that you can look at while on school premises. Besides it’s not you, I believe that your interests are sincere, it’s the other coach down the hall who will see your privilege and take it a step further.

The school is right, you’re wrong now move on.

Try typing https in the address bar instead of http. It worked for me.

Edders, there is a vast difference between there being some pics on this site and coming to this site and gazing at pictures.

However, given that there is no nudity, I think you are strongly over reacting. Men and women, and the differences between them, are part of society.

This is visible throughout society, in school or out of school, ever day. It is normal and natural.

Heck, any summer day will show you more sexuality than you need to see.

Once again, of course, if a teacher was gazing at porn or otherwise exhibiting lewd behavior that would be a different story.

If all else fails, try this…

I feel your pain. I am in a similar circumstance. Coach, weight trainer, school teacher, ect. Occasionally I get blocked as well. It’s kind of random. Sometimes it lasts for a few minutes, sometimes it lasts for weeks. It has motivated me to save and purchase a computer for my home. It’s amazing to me how addictive this site is.

You can also just turn off the Powerful Images in your preferences

No, he’s saying that the censorship is arbitrary and capricious. Completely illegitimate sites are allowed through, while sites with at least some educational value are blocked.

You’d “make sure,” huh? Big man. Are you the superintendent of schools? No? Oh.

WTF does that even mean? If you can’t craft a clear usage policy, don’t provide internet access.

Again, what does this even mean? “The school is right.” No, the school just happens to have the power to set arbitrary standards… there is no right or wrong about it. The administration, or IT department, has the authority to impose its will, and he has the right to contest it. He also has the right to complain about losing access to an educational tool.

Well, maybe if they can make a special dispensation and allow screen sites on a case-by-case basis. Also, if you can get on T-Nation does that mean the rest of the school can [if anyone became aware of it]? The school might have a legitimate concern about teenagers looking at [awesome] pictures of half-naked women and perusing forums devoted to illegal activty [ie. the steroids forum] on school time.

As far as objectionable content through google goes, I would imagine that anyone can conduct any search on google, but that the filter would still block many websites when a person attempts to click on them.

Though it may be somewhat arbitrary and unfair, sometimes bright lines need to drawn out of necessity and because it's not practical or possible to evaluate on a case-by-case basis.

IT just allowed T-Nation through the filter. So now I can get on and look at the articles. As for making sure that I’m fired if I were looking at PI or something, I don’t really care because I’m not gonna be looking at it at work.

Since it’s work related, I see no reason why they shouldn’t unblock it, if only for you.

If they don’t and you try to bypass it, make sure it’s not grounds for suspension/termination. I know the usage policy where I work is quite clear about consequences for bypassing explicit blocks that have been put in place.

Most likely, they’re using one of those dumb automated filters and they’ll simply put T-Nation on the white list and you’ll be set to go.

You might want to sue all the parents who let their kids go to school showing more skin than you’ll find in the PI’s.

And also all the parents who allow their kids to bring any magazine similar to Maxim with them to school.

Censorship rocks! The human body is gross and should be blocked from our children’s eyes. Save them from the evils of showing cleavage or a naked hip and thigh!

I also heard of a fetish that some guys like looking at women’s arm hair. I suggest long-sleeved shirts for anyone who’s walking around in a public area, no matter what the weather is like.

Good points, but then again if gazing at scantily clad women by a teacher on the Internet, during school hours can be avoided, it should.
